This is a very well balanced mix of history, culture, architecture and practical guidance for eating, sleeping and getting around to do the sightseeing. Copiously illustrated with photos, art and maps. I was particularly taken with the treatment of Indian cuisines, for there are many, setting out the origins and variety of dishes including local specialities.
But the test of a guide is how good it is when you get there. This one is excellent. It made the Red Fort come alive and nearby Chandni Chowk. I shall never forget the three rikshaws carting our group, at some pace, deeper and deeper into the crowded narrow streets - I felt absorbed into India that day. DK enriched the experience.
This book is brilliant and reading it will definitely help you gain an appreciation for NW-India and help plan your trip there.
What it won't do is actually prepare you for your experiences there. No book can do justice to how small you feel next to the towering architecture or to how good the food tastes (be careful with small bowls of soup, it might be chilli sauce) or the death defying experiences you'll get wrong-way driving to get lunch on the other side of the Agra to Delhi highway. Oh and don't worry about the black goop coming out of your nose, that's just the smog. You should go in the rainy season if you want clean air.
Though heavier than Rough guides or Lonely Planet guides thanks to loads of glossy pages with pictures, the DK Eyewitness ones I find have better maps and descriptions as well as list of things to see, do and visit. This one focuses more on Delhi and dips into Agra and Jaipur, but is a good enough guide for Beginners who want to cover all the main sights.
Travel books are intrinsically difficult to rate until one has travelled. While I think the Rick Steves setup in his books is the clearest and easiest to follow of all the travel books ive read this one has made me excited to go to Delhi. That’s what it is supposed to do. It’s real success will be measured when I go.
An informative travel guide that is useful when travelling the Golden Triangle in India. Obviously, you can't include everything in a single guidebook. However, the information that is provided is informative and well researched.
India is a vibrant, colourful country full of culture and tradition. This is captured in the pages of this guidebook.
Very nice guidebook. I always combine DK with some other cause this one maybe lacks in practical information in comparison with LP or Rough-guide but it's a nice reminder (with all photos) of the places you saw. Plus I remember seeing one of previous edition of DK on the bookshelf (some 10-15 years ago): I took it and was amazed with the image of the Taj and was thinking "I will be there one of these days!"
Delving in and out of this in preparation of my holiday coming up. Full of masses of information on the sights, smells and sounds that we'll encounter (hopefully). As usual with Eyewitness guides always useful to have along with you. In combination with `Trip Advisor' online, the best guides on the market.
The Taj Mahal is everything they say - it literally took my breath away when I first saw it. When you hear the tour guide tell the story of why it was built, you realize there really is true love in this world.
I fell in love with India. The people of India are the nicest people I have ever met while travelling. I am so impressed with this culture. Amazing people!
