From the author who created the Life Is But a Dream series and the Cooper Moon series. Six long-time friends gather for their annual New Year’s Eve party. They are meeting at Craig and Hannah’s spectacular home in the country. Hannah is a best-selling romance novelist. Craig is her adoring husband. All seems perfect. Except nothing is. No one knows that Craig left Hannah several months ago and is living across town with another woman. Tonight, Craig and Hannah will play the part one more time. Because tomorrow will be soon enough for broken dreams and reality. Tonight, they just have to get through the party. But they didn’t plan on the snowstorm. A snowstorm that will keep them all snowed in together for the next three days. Which is plenty of time for secrets to be discovered, for illusions to be shattered, and for resolutions to be broken. So, dab a little perfume behind your ear, put your party dress on, and slip into your favorite heels. You’re invited to the party!

We all wear our smiles like veneer, trying to look like pretty confident packages while inside our lives our crumbling. We don't even want our friends to know. Because then what will they ever think of us when their lives are so perfect...until
...their walls come tumblin' down.
It's true for many of these characters as well. .
Every new year's eve Craig and Hannah have put on a party for their friends since college and this year Craig wants to do the same. This time things are different though because he's left Hannah for another woman - young Shelia who, of course, isn't invited to the party. After he and Hannah pull this party off, then it's really bye-bye Hannah for good. Their friends arrive at the party not knowing about the broken marriage. His reason for the secrecy - He doesn't want to spoil the holidays of his and Hanna's daughter, Jenny who is away at college.
Craig hired people to carpet his and Shelia's apartment and while he's at the party, one of the two carpet guys gets called away, leaving one man behind. Needless to say, Craig is jealous.
While the party is going on, a huge snowstorm is underway, causing Craig and Hannah's friends to be stranded. While Craig is stranded, carpet guy is also stranded. With Craig's lady. Craig-y boy is feeling insecure.
Rita use to be Max' wife and makes nasty remarks about young Amber because she is with Max and because she's young and thin, and well, Rita is no longer those things. The females in the group have all pre-judged Amber but she's not as shallow as one may think.
Andrew acts like super stud in front of his very pregnant wife, Emily.
Billy is there as well.
Besides the "all-is-well-with-our-perfect-little-lives" most of the characters bring to the party, some try to make others jealous. There is actually physical fighting and other "action."
I chose this book for our book club's January read because of the title. I thought it was appropriate for the new year. I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down. I really enjoyed the story and the characters. I found myself rooting for Hannah and felt sorry for Amber. I really enjoyed the characters and realizing that everyone had the wrong impression of each other. I would highly recommend reading this book. It was enjoyable from beginning to end. I found it to be a situation that could really happen (being snowed in for days) especially since I live in Upstate, NY. I gave this book 5 stars because I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more of Cheryl's books.
Broken Resolutions is a serious comedy. It honestly reminded me of movies like The Big Chill, Grand Canyon and even Short Cuts. Four couples, friends since college, gather to celebrate the New Years and end up having to spend the weekend together because of the weather conditions. Tragic secrets are revealed among them and it's from this that the book derives its humor. What I like are the truths that Shireman explores. It was totally believable. Broken Resolutions is an emotional ride filled with plenty of highs and an equal amount of lows.
Cheryl explores the relationship between married couples, exes, and friends in such a way that it feels incredibly real. This novel is as much tragic as it is funny. Bittersweet and emotional, Broken Resolutions is a beautiful read from beginning to end.
I felt like I had been there and done that. Was this my life story? I thought Ms. Shireman had been window peeking on all of my friends. What a fun read and yet not so funny when it happens to you or friends. Watch for this author to arrive in the New York Times best-sellers list!
This was a great read. Five couples continue with a holiday tradition. Three characters deserved to be slapped and at least three deserve an award. The scene was so vivid and clear in my mind. This is my second book to read from this author. I look forward to many more. Marla
Broken Resolutions gives a sneak peak into the lives of three couples who met in college and spend New Year's Eve together. This time their lives are in turmoil and as they are snowed in their secrets unfold. Great story, well written characters, with real life problems.
I am reading this book from the Amazon Prime Kindle lending library. So far it's interesting and kind of funny. Nothing too intellectually stimulating here, but fun to read.
Ummm... Well it wasn't what I was expecting at all. But I'm not saying you won't like it, but it was a little too old and scandalish for me. But you should give it a chance (Not that bad a book) :/ ♥
