Lacrosse: Fundamentals for Winning By: David Urick Review by: Jack Dolan
I knew a lot about lacrosse before reading The Fundamentals of Winning, but after reading this book I feel like I know everything there is to know about lacrosse. The author, David Urick, is an 8 time national lacrosse champion. He describes everything from the basics of the game to some of the more advanced plays. This book tells you everything you need to know in order to become successful in the sport of lacrosse.
My favorite part of this book was the section about offense. This section describes dodges such as the roll, face, and split dodges and goes into detail about how to execute the dodges effectively. There is a part in the offensive section that explains where the goalie’s weaknesses are for the type of shot you are attempting to shoot. I found this portion of the book to be extremely helpful and have been trying to use what I learned from it while playing lately.
Another section that I found interesting was the defensive section. It explains that defense is not just a bunch of one on one’s, but that you need to play as team. It includes detailed information about stick checks, slide packages, and different types of defense.
One thing I did not like about this book though was The Transition Game chapter. It is very long and does not provide very much helpful information. It has many diagrams of how to attack a fast break defense and how to defend a fast break offense. While it was my least favorite chapter of the book, it taught me a few things I did not know as a midfielder.
The Fundamentals of Winning is filled with valuable facts about lacrosse both on and off the field. It was also very interesting how David Urick provides his own personal opinions about the topics brought up in the book. All of his opinions have many facts to support them though.
Each chapter is packed with so much information about topics to make sure you fully understand it. I found this to be the case even if the topic is not that important to lacrosse. Everything about lacrosse is covered in this book and is filled with many pictures to help you grasp the information.
This book can get a little boring at times but, the facts it includes are very helpful. If you have a passion for lacrosse, then I would highly recommend this book. Even if you are an expert on lacrosse, you can still learn a few things from reading this book. I really enjoyed it and learned things about lacrosse that I would’ve never known without reading this book.
