Transforming Scrooge: Dickens’ Blueprint For A Spiritual Awakening is an interesting and novel examination of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Author Joseph D. Cusumano looks at the plot and themes of A Christmas Carol and applies Eastern philosophical concepts (such as Chakras and Kundalini) to them along with Gnostic spirituality. Despite its unorthodoxy, the analysis proves to be quite fascinating; though not entirely convincing. The reliance on The Gospel of Thomas, and treating it as authoritative Christian scripture, is especially bizarre. A copy of A Christmas Carol, complete with illustrations, is included in the end of the book as a reference that is used throughout the discussions. While its theories may be unconventional and controversial, Transforming Scrooge: Dickens’ Blueprint For A Spiritual Awakening is a thought-provoking exploration of Dickens’ literary classic.
