A humorous look at churches in America by photgrapher Herman Krieger with a foreword by Kern Trembath, Assistant Chairman, Department of Theology, University of Notre Dame. The book has 86 duotone illustrations.
'Churches ad hoc' is interesting in that Herman Kreiger matches his photographs of churches with amusing captions, each of which presents what one reviewer described as an 'irreverent photo essay on churches' and he stresses that they in turn 'draw a variety of responses'.
Another reviewer stated, 'The captions are quite funny. The clergy particularly will have fun with your good work.' Well, there is nothing too shocking among it for as another satirical magazine editor said, 'Among the best examples of satire on the internet.'
Some examples are the caravan-type church being towed to its next venue with the caption 'Holy Roller' while a Central United Methodist Church was holding a Jazz Sunday on May 28 with the Blues Street Band in action; the caption is 'When the Saints Come Marching In'! Not forgetting its primary business underneath the Church placard also states 'Breakfast 8am Worship 10.30am'!
Another Church, under one of its crosses, advertises 'Self-guided tours begin in the gift shop' with the caption 'Follow the Wise Men'... well, we are on the way to Christmas (forgive me for mentioning it so early but our shops are packed out with Christmas goods already!)
An ultra modern Church, looking like a New York glass fronted skyscraper with its huge cross displayed in front of the glass offers 'Window Dressing', very subtle! And a cross strategically placed within a tree, seemingly high on a hill, states 'Propagation on the Mount'.
The observation of Kern R Trembath of the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame rings true when it states, 'What this volume ultimately is, then, is a book about what the catholic tradition terms "Sacramentality", the insight of God's presence is mediated by any and all parts of creation, and hence that God is as permanently as close, or as far away, as the individual wishes God to be.'
The Churches featured are certainly, to pick up on the title wording, 'ad hoc' and I imagine the sub-title 'A Divine Comedy' is as apt as it was to Dante!
