Is this book boring because Millard Fillmore was boring? Or is it just boring. Who can say. Good thing the only thing you need to remember about Millard Fillmore is that he was terrible for passing the Fugitive Slave Act.

This is a very good look at the basic events of Millard Fillmore's life. From his origins in NY and his connections with Thurlow Weed - to the Vice Presidency, Presidency and a second run at the White House. It talks about his stand on the compromise of 1850 and the Fugitive Slave Act and then a reversal of enforcement. It talked about successes and failures in life and in the White House. The Slavery issues had more detail, but most other information was just laid out there. Very good for an introduction to young students for the first time. Probably 3rd grade and up could get something from the text, but would need explanation at younger levels.

Despite the details, I felt like the book really didn't give much of a sense of who Fillmore was personally. Perhaps there isn't much documentation to support it.

Most of the presidential books I pick out are used for my 6th graders curriculum. I have never read this particular presidential series before and didn’t know what to expect. While I personally enjoyed it, the material did delve a bit farther into politics then my sixth grader was interested in listening to, and she LOVES American history. This series would be wonderful for high school age students wanting to learn more about Presidential History and American politics, and would be a wonderful addition to any high school library.

I couldn't find a good book about Millard Fillmore but did find this book which is really more for school age children but it did the trick. I learned more about Millard Fillmore and the Compromise of 1850.

82 pages was quite sufficient to summarize why Fillmore is consistently ranked in the bottom 25% of US Presidents.
