This book tells the story of the fabled Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, a vast summer resort perched on the west bluff of the island looking over the Straits of Mackinac for over one hundred years. It’s a well-researched account which describes the inception of the hotel, it’s creation via the investment of two railroads and a steamship company, and its management through numerous managers and owners, up to the late 1980s. There’s a splendour of detail and much Mackinac Island and midwestern history as well. It covers every aspect of the hotel-the architecture, the business, the operations, even its interior design at the hands of flamboyant decorator Carleton Varney. It’s also very well illustrated with 1980s professional photography of interiors and exteriors plus many historical photographs of the hotel over its century-long lifespan. This is a wonderful history which does its subject justice.
