Great text written in a living book style, instead of just dry facts. Nicely written. Photos and illustrations add alot. But, because some of the photos are graphic, I am hesitating reading this to my 8yo son. But, think it would be wonderful when he is just abit older.

Saying that, I would classify myself as EXTREMELY finicky at what I allow my child to be exposed to in any kind of media. My concern with this particular book is the gruesomeness of a mummy that may lead to nightmares. It has closeups, including of the face. My son has an amazingly detailed memory and soaks up info like a sponge. He VERY rarely has nightmares, and I attribute that to not being exposed to ideas that may lead to them during the day! Not an easy task, but worth it.

And he is still in the phase of making sense of 'make-believe', since he is trying to figure out how Santa, the Leprechauns, Easter Bunny and the Tooth fairy manage to operate. :) He has had to grow up in alot of ways with battling a major life-threatening illness, and we have encouraged him to remain a child in any other ways we can. So be it, an 8yo that still beleives in the magic of those figures. I think it is grand. There needs to by some innocence for very child!

Obviously, this is a true to real-life book...but just to help you understand my review. I think MOST parents would be o.k. with an 8yo reading this, I am just not 'most' in the area of media. Again, I am EXTREMELY finicky on what I allow.

That said. This book gets a thumbs up from me! And now it has peaked my interest and I want to find some other sources with even more detailed info on the Iceman....if there are any! Off to my search....

I read this to the boys for their history curriculum. While the pictures were a little graphic (the boys thought it was digusting), the story was wonderful and they listened intently and chimed in several times.
