Numerous expeditions of Charles William Beebe, American naturalist, explorer, and author, include a record oceanic descent in a bathysphere, which he helped to design in 1934.
William Beebe worked as a marine biologist and entomologist. For the zoological society of New York, he conducted his deep dives, and people remember his prolific scientific writing for both academic and popular audiences.
He also wrote under the names Charles William and C. William Beebe.
What a great book! It is amazing that William Beebe is not a household name in modern times. I first hard his name while a volunteer at the New York Aquarium, the present home of the bathysphere. It is unfortunate that he is not more well known outside zoological and natural history circles. This book is a true example of a scientific exploration and adventure. Aboard the ship Arcturus, he explores the Galapagos and Cocos Islands on a scientific expedition for the New York Zoological Society (now WCS) during the 1920s. These were truly remote places then, not the bucket list travel destinations they are today. The book is a grand adventure that draws the reader in with each new species Beebe and the crew of the Arcturus encounter and describe. His encounters with wildlife and marine animals helped give the Galapagos the mystique it currently has today. A great book for anyone considering traveling to the Galapagos especially. I would recommend this book to all.
