When Danger Calls

Rate this book
This is a reissue with a new cover, and minor updates, but it is not a new book.

Set against a Montana mountain backdrop, When Danger Calls is a story filled with action, adventure, and romance, where the stakes keep getting higher and higher.

If someone asks single mother Frankie Castor to clear a room, she’ll smile and find a vacuum cleaner. Ryan Harper, on the other hand, uses a gun. Is it possible they can work together when their lives depend on it?

Frankie’s returned to her childhood home in Montana to help care for her mother. Her biggest worries are balancing the budget and the upkeep of an aging home. When she offers a man a ride home from the hospital, she never imagines she’ll end up having to choose between her daughter’s life and matters of national security that could cost the lives of millions.

Ryan returns to his family home to find a way to prove he didn’t leak vital information on a covert ops mission gone south. As he searches for the meaning of a file he’s kept hidden from the mission, he has no idea that international mercenaries have been searching for it—and him. When the mercenaries come after Ryan, he’s torn. Fighting for his country wars with fighting to rescue people he loves.

Terry Odell

Terry Odell was born in Los Angeles and after living several decades in Florida now makes her home in Colorado. An avid reader (her parents tell everyone they had to move from their first home because she finished the local library), she always wanted to "fix" stories so the characters did what she wanted, in books, television, and the movies. Once she began writing, she found this wasn't always possible, as evidenced when the mystery she intended to write rapidly became a romance.

However, her entry into the world of writing can be attributed to a "mistake" when her son mentioned the Highlander television series on a visit home. Being the "good mother" she began watching the show and soon connected with the world of fanfiction, first as a reader, then as a critique giver, and then, one brave weekend, she wrote her first short story.

Things snowballed (if one can use that analogy in central Florida!) and soon she was writing her first original novel. Much later, she mentioned something about a recent Highlander episode to her son, and he said, "Oh, I've never actually watched the show, I just thought the concept was cool." Little did he know what he'd started.

Frankie’s trying to hold it together, caring for her delightful daughter, watching over her mother’s romance, and struggling to keep her jobs well separated, because who wants a school-teacher to work at a bar. But the bar is where Frankie meets Ryan, and fate seems determined to throw them together until romance starts to bloom.

Of course, this is an uneasy romance. Frankie’s babbling meets Ryan’s taciturn stillness. Frankie’s ordinary world meets danger and terror. And Frankie’s delightful daughter worms her way into everyone’s hearts.

The dialog is fun and natural, especially when a little girl steals the scenes. Love scenes are sensually detailed. And danger involves the usual chapter of accidents, guesses and missteps. When Mom’s finances come into question, who knows whether terrorists or thieves will win the day?

When Danger Calls is a fun tale with a beautiful Colorado setting, pleasing characters, good humor, detailed sensuality, and just enough excitement and mystery to keep the pages turning.

Disclosure: I found a free ecopy and I enjoyed it.

3 1/2*

It doesn’t usually take me 3 days to finish a book — this one was a bit drawn out which took away from its appeal. I liked Frankie and Ryan together but the relationship didn’t feel perfect - that they were meant to be together. Some good suspense and surprises, some disjointed scenes.

The first book in the Blackthorne, Inc. series by Terry Odell. Ryan Harper is back home in Montana after quitting his job at Blackthorne, Inc. His last op didn't end well and he believes there is a leak there. He meets Gladys (aka Frankie) at a bar and he is attracted but he can't let himself get distracted from his personal mission. Frankie is a substitute teacher and works at the bar three nights a week as Gladys. When her mom ends up in the hospital after falling, Frankie runs into Ryan, or Jack as she called him, there. Ryan's father had an accident while driving his car and Ryan worries that it wasn't an accident.

I've read Terry Odell before and I remembered that I liked what I read so when I saw this series I decided to give it a go. I liked it. It wasn't perfect but it kept a good steady pace throughout. I did have a few minor questions at the end but no real cliffhangers. I think I will definitely continue the series.

When Danger Calls is the first book in the Blackthorne Inc. series. It can be read as a standalone. There is violence and adult content. The storyline is average but enjoyable and worth reading for an escape.

I liked the storyline a lot. The suspense of terrorists coming after Ryan for the intel he has in his posession putting his love and her daughter in danger felt real, as did the accuracy in the author’s description of his pain from the injuries he got in combat. But that’s about the extent of the authenticity. Being married myself to a former Navy special operator made this book a little hard to take seriously. Terry Odell did her research and came close... but too many things were just a bit off, or unbelievable, or overly emotional, or inaccurate to a soldier’s training, etc. I was also put off by the amount of cursing (lots of F-bombs, sh*t, and taking the lord’s name in vain) and the graphic (yet tasteful) nature of the sex scenes, because there are several. The dynamic between the characters was pleasant to read and felt pretty realistic. Overall, I might read it again down the road; 3 stars.

For the most part, I found the story okay. I did not like a lot of Frankie's actions towards the last third of the book and I found how Blacktorne handled Ryan deplorable so I could only give 3 stars as this book just didn't work for me even though it was okay.

Likeable characters and a satisfying story. I think romantic suspense is a tad too dark for my tastes lately. Looking for fluffier content.

I enjoyed this suspenseful romance. When a mission went sideways for Black Ops specialist, Ryan, and he was injured, he was put on leave. His boss suspected he had something to do with leaked information that caused the mission to fail. Ryan went to his hometown to recuperate determined to clear his name. When he met Frankie, he never expected to fall for her. But he did.

Ryan's life was filled with danger and when that danger appeared in his small town and put everyone he loved at risk, he found himself in the fight of his life. I liked the characters. They weren't perfect but that just made them feel more real. I didn't like the explicit sex. It wasn't necessary for the storyline to have such detail.

This book will hold your attention all the way through. Romantic suspense fans will like it.

This book has something to offer every reader. It's a fast paced, action packed thriller with a romantic twist. The story begins in medias res. For those of you who might be a little rusty with your Latin, in medias res means in the middle of things and in this case it begins in the middle of a gun battle that sets the background for the story to follow. There's plenty of romance and hot sex in this story but unlike the sex in most James Bond movies and books, it's nor gratuitous sex, it plays an integral role in the story and helps define the characters. Terry Odell has crafted characters that are easy to like and root for because they are so lifelike with their human foibles. This is a book that I will be keeping in my Kindle library and will read again and again as time passes.

I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. Frankie is a single mother to a five year daughter Molly. She has just moved back home from Boston to a small Montana town called Broken Bow to help take care of her mother. To make ends meet she substitutes at an elementary school as an art teacher and 3 night a week she is secretly a cocktail waitress at a bar. Ryan, an ex Navy Seal who now works for Blackthorn Security is home recovering from a injury and two failed ops with heavy fatalities. He is sure he had been set up from inside the agency but unable to see a link to prove his innocence. From the first night Frankie waits on Ryan at the bar fate keeps weaving their paths together even as danger calls.

Romance and suspense

Page turning suspense, passionate romance, sweet Little girl who steals your heart! Macho ex-Navy seal, turned undercover operative, who is burned out and disheartened from failed missions and distrusting team members. Sassy, sweet, smart substitute teacher and single mother working three jobs to make ends meet, while trying to take care of everyone but herself. When danger comes at them, they work together to thwart the bad guys, falling in love in the process. Riveting plot line holds your attention from beginning to end. Would have given it more stars except for explicit sex and foul language, neither of which were necessary to make it a good read.

Fast moving, edge of your seat, nailbiter!

A tough espionage special agent, a struggling single mom, an endearing little blue eyes angel....can these three become friends if the adults keep their titanium walls forever in place? This story made me want to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next! There's romance, suspense, fear, love, action, and even a couple steamy sex scenes. Definitely something for everyone. I will absolutely be reading the rest of this series!

A romance novel with a black ops twist is how one could describe this book. Two people looking for their own way in life and really struggling to find how they fit with the rest of their worlds. Then those two worlds collide and things go bad.

The author does a great job of bringing in a wonderful 5 year old, and what would a story be without a heroic dog. The elements are blended together better than many authors using the same ingredients. She does pull you and tug at the heart strings as the story progresses.

Couldn't put it down...

Ryan and Frankie... oh my! What an edge-of-your-seat read! Ryan-- brooding, mysterious, fierce, handsome-- can be my Warrior Jack anytime! Frankie-- Pollyanna-positive yet a bit of a worrier, mom, and a bit humorous-- needed the Warrior she found in Ryan, but also the strength and heat she found in him. A great read leaving me wanting for more of Blackthorne, Inc.! I highly recommend!

Excellent

I can only hope the additional books in the series continue to follow Frankie, Molly, and Ryan! Great story line that holds the readers attention from beginning to end. Very realistic and heartfelt theme. Suitable for mature readers and young adults. Looking forward to the next in the series which I'll start later today. Terry you better write faster or I'll have them all read before the weekend!

Terry Odell's "When Danger Calls" (Blackthorne, Inc Book 1)
is a good read, in what maybe a great new series!
Ryan Harper is trying to recover from serious injury after
a second mission ends in disaster. After leaving the
hospital, he goes home to his fathers ranch,
that he left a long time ago, hoping to fly 'under the radar '
and figure out who betrayed him.

Real life

The very real excitement begins as the story opens & continues throughout the book. I enjoyed getting to know the characters, & that's how it felt, as real people emerged with the unfolding of the story of Frankie, Molly & Ryan (aka Mr Man). Beautiful settings, bad guys, tension, danger & romance fill this well-written adventure.

When Danger Calls is such a great read.

I read When Danger Calls in less than a day. The story seems to take on a life of it's own and wouldn't let me stop reading. It was one of the few books I've read in the last month that hasn't let me take a breath or a break from it. Thanks Terry! I love the way you write.

Good, funny, wrenching, fast moving, attention snagger, cant put it down story.

Kept my attention through out the whole story. Wasn't filled with page after page of sex. More about the story lint than about the sex.

While this is just another action packed romantic thriller, it had enough twists and turns, to keep me to finish the book, which I did in one sitting.... I'm not going to go all spoiler alert here, but Damn! Girl!
