About the author

Margit Sandemo was a Norwegian-Swedish historical fantasy author. She has been the best-selling author in the Nordic Countries since the 1980s, when her novel series of 47 books, The Legend of the Ice People, was published. She has also written many other book series such as Häxmästaren and Legenden om Ljusets rike.

Satans fodspor is not for the fainthearted.

I find it a bit scary how much I like this book.

Just a short recap. This is the book in which Niklas, Villemo and Dominic finally find out what their big purpose is. Why they've been chosen, why they have the characteristic yellow cat-eyes and supernatural powers.

It all begins with a mystery, a strange, scary creature whom the frightened citizens of Norway describe as Satan, but whom the Ice People fear might be one of their own. One of the evil ones. He has all the marks of a cursed child of the Ice People and therefore, the three cat-eyed members of the family set out to neutralise him. Make sure he stops killing people, either by killing him or reforming him.

They name him Ulvhedin and for a good long stretch of the book, he is purely evil. No human compassion, no understanding of other people.

I like the way the powerstruggle between Ulvhedin and Villemo is portrayed. They don't fight physically, but mentally. But she's not the only one to make him suddenly think about other people, maybe even care about them.

He does a lot of unforgivable things, but somehow I still can't hate him. Ulvhedin that is. Elisa, whom you'll know if you've read the book, Im just not spoiling who she is, calls the curse a disease and I'm partial to agree with her. Still, parts of this book do get a bit gruesome and creepy - just not in the sort of supernatural, serene or eerie way that we've become used to in this series. Knowing what I know, about this series and Sandemo, I'm not that surprised that she writes these scenes, nor that similar things happen much later on in the series, but I am actually sort of impressed with the way she managed to portray it.

I'm sorry if that made no sense to you. If you've read the book, I'm sure it will and if you haven't I just don't want to spoil you. If you have no plans for reading it, I don't know why you're still reading my long, rambling reviews.

Despite the awful things that happen in this book, there's some humour to be found also and I really need that balance while reading this story. And that's why I ultimately love this book. Because it is an emotional, interesting, scary and horrifying story. But it is also a story that makes me feel just a bit of empathy for the supposedly evil character, a lot of empathy with the victims, not just of Ulvhedin's but also that of the ridiculous soldiers. I just, I like this book, because the curse and the fight to not give in to the evil that lurks in the cursed inviduals get ramped back up again. And that's the best part of the series. It's a family saga, yes, it's a lot of people and generations' stories of growing up in Scandinavia in the 1500 and 1600s. But it is also a fantasy, a story of the ultimate good and evil, long threads of destiny that spins a web that the characters have to live in.

Postanowiłam oznaczyć to co napiszę jako spoiler, ponieważ większość zapisów dotyczy środkowej oraz końcowej części książki.
Od wydarzeń z poprzedniego tomu mija siedem lat. Autorka postanowiła dosyć drastycznie uśmiercić część rodziny, żeby zmniejszyć ilość osób. Jednak, w końcu, wyjaśni się z czym musi zmierzyć się Villemo, Dominik i Mikael, bo tyle było o tym trąbione przez ostatnie tomy i w zasadzie do teraz żadna konkretna informacja nie padła.

Autorka poszła na takie szczyty absurdu, że ręce opadają. To co ona zrobiła z postacią Elisy.. dosłownie brakuje mi słów. Najpierw gwałt, potem ciąża, a facet, który zachowywał się jak bydle nagle dosłownie zmienia swój charakter (ze złego zmienia się w dobrego), bo zakochuje się w dziewczynie, którą gwałcił, a przy okazji zapłodnił. Dlaczego gwałt został zromantyzowany, uznany jako nic złego, wręcz motywującego do zmiany. Co się tutaj zadziało, co siedziało w głowie autorki. Przede wszystkim utrwala paskudne przekonanie, że jeśli krzywdzona kobieta (albo nazwijmy wprost - ofiara) zajdzie w ciążę oraz będzie wierzyć w złego mężczyznę to on zmieni całe swoje życie. Sprzeciwiam się czemuś takiemu. Już nie będę się rozpisywać na temat samego zachowania Elisy po wszystkim, bo wydźwięk jest taki, że w sumie otrzepała się z trawy i stwierdziła, że nic się nie stało tylko co proboszcz na parafii powie na temat bękarta.

Ten tom jest koszmarny.

Pomysł na fabułę zupełnie od czapy, dawno nie było takiego pokręconego tomu. Zakochiwanie się w potworze przez którego było się zgwałconym było trochę jednak poronione i żenujące. Jest to bezpośrednie kontynuacja przygód Villemo i wszystkich obdarzonych członków ludzi lodu. Szukają onipotwora, który zostawia w całej Norwegii ślady i które ludzie nazwali śladami szatana. Ogólnie jeden z bardziej żenujących tomów ale kolejne części chyba już będą dotyczyć innych bohaterów, więc czytam dalej jak już dotarłam tak daleko.

På det hela taget är det en ointressant inlaga i Isfolket-eposet. Den är fullsmetad med löjliga detaljer, inget intressant av vikt händer och det lilla som möjligen skulle kallas det sparas till en kommande bok. Sandemo har dessutom en säregen pladdrig berättarteknik som jag finner mer och mer irriterande ju andra böcker jag läser. Trots det tänker jag fortfarande försöka ta mig igenom alla böckerna i serien.

Ciężko określić co myśle o tej części.
Większość książki to nuda, bo skupia się na obawach, przeczuciach, podróży i dużej ilości emocji. Następne dochodzi do starcia z Potworem. Całą książkę przesiąka brutalność i nienawiść. Mimo wszystko kończy się dobrze i szczęśliwie. Ogólnie daje jej 5/10

Ogólnie tom był bardzo interesujący i trzymający w napięciu, miałby szansę na 5/5 ale musiałam odjąć za paskudną kreację relacji Elisy z Ulvhedinem :/ w tym za ukazanie gwałtu jako czegoś co jest całkiem okej - Halo???
Poza tym mi osobiście nie przeszkadzała przemiana bad boya w grzecznego chłopca, ale to pewnie kwestia mojego gustu wyrobionego na wattpadzie XDD

Engaging as usual

As usual the author the author is keeping me engaged in the story all the time.
There is some action and a lot of feelings.
The three descendants of the ice people is using all their powers to help a person that is going to be important to them even though they don’t know it yet.
I love all the characters and the story is flowing easily.
I will keep on reading this saga and loving it as usual.

I enjoyed this a lot more on the re-read, mostly since I now have context for everything. It's among the better Ice People books and how weird Ulvhedin is was a lot of fun to read. All the other characters were good and well, I don't have too much to say about it. It was another solid book and I'm excited to see how the series continues.

However, I'm a bit sad that so many previous main characters were died off page and it was just casually mentioned. I liked some of them goddamnit!

W końcu nastąpił wyczekiwany przeze mnie powiew świeżości! Villemo wraz z pozostałymi kociookimi potomkami Ludzi Lodu, wreszcie będzie mogła się wykazać czymś więcej poza rozterkami uczuciowymi. W tej części bowiem nadejdzie zapowiadana od jakiegoś czasu tajemnicza konfrontacja, do której owa trójka była wybrana. Oczywiście nie zdradzę o co chodzi, ale muszę przyznać, że takie historie czyta się dobrze. Mam nadzieję, że autorka w dalszych częściach sagi będzie trzymać taki kierunek.

Po trzynastu tomach sagi muszę jednak powiedzieć, że chyba nie bardzo odpowiada mi erotyka w wykonaniu pani Sandemo. Jak tylko autorka zabiera się za te tematy, to efekt finalny wywołuje u mnie głównie uśmiech politowania. Zdążyłam już zauważyć, że kobiety z rodu Ludzi Lodu do najbardziej wstydliwych nie należą, ale najgorsza chyba jest w tym wszystkim momentami anatomiczna dokładność. W romansidłach wolę raczej bardziej subtelne podejście do tematu, może dlatego Grey nie przypadł mi do gustu ;)

This is the book I remember most vividly from teenage years when I read these for the first time 😂 Not for the most sensitive readers. I don't read this kind of genre nowadays, just this series for nostalgia. But is this level of not-really-consensual rape normalization normal in literature (without a warning ⚠️)?!? And to think I read this stuff when I was 15... Wild. But if you can read that kind of stuff and like it and not get triggered and can see it as rougher kind of smut, sure this can be entertaining.

Jak już się ucieszyłam, że Villemo przestała "latać z d*pą" i fabuła znowu zrobiła się wciągająca, to pojawiła się postać Elizy, która jest 100x gorsza od Villemo. Dajcie proszę mądrzejsze kobiece postaci w następnych tomach pls, ja już nie mam siły...

A ten fragment to mnie całkiem zniszczył:
"- To mały człowiek. - nieoczekiwanie wtrącił się Alv. - Do którego istnienia ty się przyczyniłeś. Bez twojego udziału nie byłoby go tu dzisiaj.

Na Boga, ileż ten Alv wie o życiu, pomyślała Villemo zdumiona. Cóż, całe dnie spędza w stajni i oborze!"

Asså jag har inte riktigt något att säga. Boken var väl helt okej, men aa. Att Ulvhedin i slutet levde med sin Elisa och sonen Jon, och hela Isfolket, var faktiskt hjärtevärmande ändå.

Och jag loooovar, att Ulvhedins föräldrar är Tristan och Gudrun! Hon blev säkert gravid när hon ”förförde” Tristan för några böcker sedan, och drog upp i fjällen. Hennes familj, Svartskogsfolket, sa att hon dog av sjukdomar, men det var nog vid födseln av Ulvhedin.

I found this book intriguing, it's both fascinating and scary how the author is able to create characters who are so far removed from our own ethical and moral lifestyles. The historical aspect is greatly appreciated as it gives the reader an insight to how everyday life was for everyday people (granted people closer to nobility in this volume)

Ocena: 2 z minusem.
Wrażenia: Niby fajne, ale jedno duże zastrzeżenie - utrwala wiarę w bajeczki, że jeśli kobieta zwiąże się z przemocowym mężczyzną, to siłą miłości swojej i wspólnym dzieckiem uda się go zmienić w dobrego człowieka. No sorry, bez mocy Villemo nie ma bata ;)
Dla kogo: Nie dla tych, których triggeruje gwałt.

Äntligen är böckerna bättre igen! Längtade efter att få läsa mera och tänkte mycket på boken. Något som stör är dock att Elisa blir så kär i Ulevedin trots våldtäkterna. Det skaver. ”Övertalningen” känns lite för lätt också, önskar det varit lite mer kamp.

I am not entirely sure I liked the main antagonist, and I suppose that is a good thing. He invokes anger in me. Or rather, his actions, which in hindsight is splendid writing. The author made me mad at points, frustrated and annoyed, and not in the bad way. In the end, I think I liked it.

Nja verkligen inte den bästa… ”romanserna” är helt out of control, hur kan man skriva om våldtäkt på det här sättet? Nä nu visar nog Margit sin ålder lite för mycket, och glorifierar primitiv lust på ett sätt som inte funkar för mig. Hoppas nästa blir bättre.
