Saved From The Fire

Rate this book
Starting on Mars, ending in the frozen Arctic North and set between the 22nd and 23rd centuries, this powerful and moving story follows the collapse of civilisation, a world where books are burned and technology is despised. It follows the struggle of a handful of people who will fight to save books and humanity from the fire.

Max Grade has never been a hero, until he finds himself on Mars joining forces with Quant, a hyperintelligent android, to save the world from extinction. But the rest of Max’s crew think Quant has gone rogue and needs to be destroyed. Meanwhile, astronaut Frank Allen, sent by NASA on a last-ditch mission to avert disaster, is intent on letting the world end as he gets inspired by a growing anti-knowledge cult, and goes about killing anyone who might get in his way. It is the imperfection of the human mind and not the artificial sentience of Quant that threatens the end of civilisation. If Max and Quant are to stop Frank Allen, they must sacrifice everything, even themselves.

Part 2 of the novel is set a few generations after the events on Mars and follows a group of survivors, persecuted by The Librarians, rulers of what may be the last remaining city-state, committed to a world without books and technology. Both survivors and androids must forge bonds of love and friendship if they are to escape and rebuild the world.
Cluny the cloned boy. His android carer Aux. Oracle, the sentient former sex toy of a multi-billionaire. Dawn, the child she raises. Hartman and Clarissa, the rescuers of books. These are just some of the characters whose sacrifice is revealed in a series of flashbacks and tell the story of a fallen humanity and the exploits of those who try to redeem its best qualities.
