The book is a mix of graphic and informational text about Gandhi's life. It's a straightforward description of the major milestones that affected change in his life and for the lives of others. It picks out events like the salt march, his many hunger strikes in which those fighting against him changed their ways to get him to eat again, how his time in South Africa changed him including a train ride in which he was called a derogatory name and ejected from his first class car. These specific instances allowed the reader to focus on how he changed politics and policies and what his core beliefs are, while teaching readers about others' beliefs.
The only thing I found curious was that the man who assassinated him, who was a radical Hindu, is actually essentially how the book ends. It shares his killing and gives a two-page spread on Hinduism and the plot and Godse himself. Then the last few pages are quotes about or attributed to Gandhi. I think it would have been more fitting for final words about his legacy rather than ending it with the man and his beliefs who murdered Gandhi.
Deserves a place in any school library, but it's going to be a tough sell. The cover's a mess, the comic book part is not super well-drawn, and the text pages are very text-y. In some places, the translation feels like a translation. ON THE OTHER HAND. Readable, comprehensive, heavily illustrated with archival photos, and at least touches on Gandhiji's not-always-optimal relationship with his wife. Many references to other historic and literary figures, encouraging further exploration. And it made me queue up all the ragas I had in iTunes and listen to them all day.
It's hard to write an original biography of Gandhi, but darned if this book doesn't make for an original take. It begins with a look at Gandhi's early years in comic book form. From there the text turns into a straight biography, with lots of photographs and images to complement the storytelling. The book explains concepts like the formation of Pakistan better than anything else I've ever encountered for children, and yet it doesn't make him out to be a saint. We see his flaws, and in the end that shows us what a good man he was. In spite of it gawdawful green and purple color (seriously, Enchanted Lion Press . . . seriously??) this is a keeper. - B
Informative book for children about Gandhi. It's a quick read, but I learned a fair amount (which probably says more about the poor state of non-US history education in the US than about the quantity of information in this book).
One Sentence Review: I love the use of comics and media-infused text in this book to tell Gandhi's story, though I'm a little baffled as to why they chose to work with a palette of purple and puce.
