Death and Exile is the history of the deportation and death of millions of Muslims in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from areas that have remained centers of conflict - the Balkans, the Middle East, and what was the Soviet Union - and shows how these ethnic and religious conflicts developed.
The history of the expansion of the Russian Empire and creation of new nations in the Balkans has traditionally been told from the standpoint of the Christian nations that were carved from the Ottoman Empire. Death and Exile tells the story from the position of the Turks and other Muslims who suffered death and exile as a result of imperialism, nationalism, and ethnic conflict.
Death and Exile radically changes our view of the history of the peoples of the Middle East and the Balkans. It presents a new framework for understanding conflicts that continue today.

His area of expertise is the history of the late Ottoman Empire.

McCarthy has attracted most attention for his views on the Armenian Genocide, occurring during the waning years of the Ottoman Empire. Most genocide scholars label these massacres as genocide, but McCarthy views them as part of a civil war, triggered by World War I, in which equally large numbers of Armenians and non-Armenians died.

Absolutely amazing book and necessary for anyone interested in late Ottoman history. This book basically chronicles the ways in which the Ottoman empire was slowly destroyed by it's subjects with the help of the Great Powers, England, France, Austria and especially Russia. It also describes the way in which Muslims were ethnically cleansed from the lands "liberated" by the Great powers. Often these powers would actively support these groups, overlooking the fact that they engaged in large scale massacres of Muslims, while attacking the Ottomans for doing the same thing. Although sometimes bias and apologetic for the Ottomans, this book is sorely needed in the west where all we ever hear about is how evil the Ottomans and Muslims in general were.

هذا الكتاب لمؤرخ امريكي جمع الوثائق وشهادات الناس على ما حصل لمسلمين الدولة العثمانية من تهجير وابادات جماعية بفعل الحروب خصوصا مع روسيا القيصرية، وكان ااقرن التاسع عشر في غاية القسوة على المسلمين حيث تعرضوا لابشع انواع الاضطهاد في طور ضعف الدولة العثمانية.

يتكلم الكاتب في البداية عن النزعة القومية التي بدأت تصحو عند الشعوب وهو ما اثر على الدولة العثمانية ذات الاعراق والديانات العديدة وكانت هذه الصحوة القومية بداية التقسيم النفسي بين القوميات قبل ان يأتي التقسيم الحقيقي بعد الحرب العالمية الاولى، ودخلت روسيا العدوة اللدود للعثمانيين لتقضم الاراضي العثمانية سواء بالاحتلال المباشر او عن طريق تمويل الحركات القومية الانفصالية، فدعمت البلغار واليونانيين والصرب والارمن ليقوموا باضطهاد المسلمين وطردهم من أراضيهم وسرقة أموالهم وارتكاب ابشع المجازر بحقهم حتى فرغت الكثير من القرى والمدن منهم.

الكتاب مؤلم جداً يسلط الضوء على ناس منسيين وكما يقول الكاتب انه تم تسليط الضوء على اضطهاد المسيحيين من قبل المسلمين رغم انه لا يمثل شيئا لو قارناه باضطهاد المسلمين الممنهج والنتيجة التي نراها اليوم مثلا انه تم تفريغ دول البلقان من المسلمين بعد ان كانوا اغلبية.

لكن لفت نظري شيء كهذا في مذكرات ملك هانم التي أقرؤها حاليا زوجة أحد الباشاوات في القرن الثامن عشر
حيث نفي إلى مكان بعيد ليحكمه
جورجيا على ما أظن
و حين كادت تصير مشكلة بين الأتراك الأقلية القاطنين في جورجيا و أهالي المدينة و كانت صلة الأتراك بقيادتهم بعيدة و متراخية
و حينها فكرت أن لو لم تحل المشكلة بدهاء ملك خانم
لكانوا ذبحوا ريثما تصل الرسائل ليستشيروا القيادة أن ماذا يفعلوا
فجاء هذا الكتاب

هذا الكتاب فريد في بابه، وأنصح كل مهتم بالتاريخ العثماني والتاريخ عمومًا بقراءته؛ فخارجه لن تستطيع التعرف على كثير من القضايا التاريخية التي زورها الغرب من أجل المصالح السياسية، كقضية الأرمن الشائكة وغيرها.
