DNF when I hit the 35 % mark (prostate exam before having sex). I was bored as all get out and I'm going to make this short and painless.

The more I read the less I liked Lawless. I didn't like the writing, the narrative was blah blah and the opposite of compelling, stilted dialogue, no emotional texture, no depth, and I couldn't feel the chemistry between the MC's either. And the sex? Yeah, I know how to do the deed, and I don't need a manual either. However, I need to feel some sparks flying, some nice tension, just give me something that would have made me want to get all hot and bothered. Oh well, dream on, baby. I really couldn't connect to the MC's and my interest just petered out. BTW, the comparison between cum and chocolate was a no-go for me (I'm a huge chocolate lover). Well, and then have you ever heard of a c*ck as big as an orange? Maybe I'm living under a rock but I didn't know that an orange is shaped like a phallus.

Considering that Colton and Diego love each other and are having a sexual relationship, I just have to share this with you:

He wasn't even a gay man, not to hear him tell it. He was a man and a doctor and those were the only labels he wanted. F*ck the world that wanted to stick a label on him. He defined himself. It only mattered to him, and was no one else's business.

Oh, and this one here is even better yet:

"Diego, you're not doing a prostate exam while you're back there, are you? I mean, that will totally f*ck up the mood!"
"I know you haven't had a physical in awhile. Just relax, lean back against me. It'll just take a second."
"Diego, goddammit! Just…"
"Fine, fine." He pulled his finger out and peeled the glove off. "Not enlarged."
"Jesus."

Riiiiiight. Jesus. I mean…seriously??? *rolls eyes* O__0

Oh, that's how I feel at the moment. Tired and bored. Sweet dreams, cutie pie.

My dislike in general? Sarah Black needs to tone down the "baby" as terms of endearment. Sorry, people, it's one of my pet peeves. It's a matter of personal preference and I will mention so again and again.

Book 1: Fearless - 3.25 - stars
I enjoy Sarah Black's writing --- she has a way of make you "feel" for the characters and the surrounding, without even trying to hard. Her way is subtle -- even when she describes the violent thing that happened to Diego, it doesn't feel gory to me, you know? Same with when Colton mentions on how he wants to do the revenge. Definitely not like some detective/mystery books I read for example. And the way she writes about how Colton feels for Diego? Pretty. Oh, so pretty.

“I’m not fearless,” Colton said, stroking the black hair back from Diego’s face. “There is one thing I’m afraid of. But you won’t let that happen to me, will you?”

Although, somewhere in the middle, Diego seems to lose his strength for awhile. Like he suddenly become a bit whiny and prefers to run away and hide from Colton's fierce way of loving.

Book 2: Lawless - 3.25 - stars
This story takes a year after "Fearless", and it's a bit longer. Colton is dealing with Diego's ex-lover, someone with El Tigre mask whipping people out, and an Apache kid stealing goats. Again, just like in book 1, the act of violence and harshness here doesn't feel too gory (how the heck did Sarah Black do that?!).

Colton and Diego are still in love as ever. I'm a bit of disappointed with how easy Colton got caught by Diego's insane ex -- although it does give a chance for Diego to shine, charging out with guns to save his lover.

To those who happened to read about Johnny Bravo first in, The Legend of the Apache Kid, will have a chance to see his grand entrance here :)

All in all, an okay collection -- but NOT a favorite of mine from the pen of Sarah Black. Feel like something powerful is missing. It's a waaaay too lovey-dovey compared to her other stories. AAAND all those "babies" give me the heebie jeebies

Oh, this was so darn good! First let me say that this new edition of Lawless not only contains the previously published novella Lawless but also Fearless which is a nice long novella previously sold separately - so two books in one with the same characters.

When I picked this up I was thinking I'd be reading about cowboys (hadn't read the blurb in a while), but no, I got Colton, a cop, and Diego, a surgeon, living in the city. But that's ok, because Colton had inherited a ranch on the Mexican border and much of the story does take place there. Colton is a cowboy at heart!

Colton and Diego are already a couple when we meet them, but they haven't yet talked about a future together. There's a lot of plot here with Colton running head long into trouble trying to protect Diego. Unfortunately he is not always able to do that, which broke my heart but somehow makes the story even richer.

I loved Colton and Diego together, and had trouble putting this book down when life got in the way of my reading. If you love a smexy romance with an action/mystery plot, this book will satisfy your craving in a big way.

Highly recommend!

Fearless can mean so many things throughout these stories...but for me Fearless is the way Colton and Diego love. To love the way Colton does, is a beautiful thing.

Loved these two stories as much as I loved The General and the Horse Lord. She writes a particular kind of character I adore, big, burly and wears a shiny sheriff star. Sigh. I'm so easy! Loved Deigo too, he was so beautiful, clever and strong. Some of the mystery aspect was at times a little over the top, but I was enjoying the characters and setting so much I didn't really give a hoot. Loved the whole thing to bits.

Diego, ahhh Diego...

Friends here in GR were raving about this book and the author. I can see why now. I can also empathize with Colton about Diego. And after the injury in the first story? Gawwwd!

Sarah Black has the gift of describing those moments in life when love, lust, and just plain tenderness are felt so strongly that they affect us physically. Those knee-weakening moments in life that the scent of a loved one's neck can elicit in us. The moment when, after mind-blowing sex, we look at a lover, sleepy and sated, sprawled out naked on the bedsheets next to us... and we know we can die happy for having experienced it.

Reading about those moments is one of the main reasons I read romance. Add the fact that they happen between two men who love each other dearly, and the endless talent this author has for bringing the characters and their emotions to life, and you have the recipe for the perfect M/M Romance. Highly recommended.

Sarah Black has now joined other talented authors in my "auto-buy" list. I look forward to going through her extensive back list. She has a fan for life in me.

Jumbled

For some reason I found this hard to follow. I had to force myself to continue. To me it felt like no one had edited the book. I was disappointed but will try other works by her as the first two books of hers that I read were great.

*sigh*

Ok, I am a little torn here, because I love Colton and I love Diego and I love them together.

The problem is, this book is 90% dialogue. EVERYTHING (except sex, and I do want to note that those scenes are well done) happens off screen and then is just, ugh, people talking about what happened.

The most bizarre was toward the end when I realized that I was reading a conversation ABOUT A CONVERSATION about what happened. (Seriously - Colton was recapping to Diego a conversation he had with somebody else about something that was going on. It was surreal.)

And that's the book. Even a BBQ ... they TALK about having the BBQ but we don't actually *SEE THE BBQ* or the raid or the anything.

And the ginormous cast of characters, most of who don't actually add anything! (Note, Diego dancing, Colton at bar, random person comes up JUST FOR THAT SCENE and has a conversation, the point of which is ... I think it's so we know how Colton feels about what' going on, because that's the conversation rather than actually describing Colton's feelings.)

Anyway, that's my frustration. SUCH A GOOD BOOK if I was reading the actual book instead of a conversation about what could have happened. I've noticed this trend in Sarah Black before (and sometimes it's better than others) and this one it was just facepalming.

(Also, there's just zero tension in this book between Diego and Colton - I mean they are adorable and perfect together but there's no tension, it's all just mostly healthy communication which would be great if OTHER things happened in the book but they don't, they happen off screen!)

/end rant :)
