anhedonia is an emotional state that once you get , you start to lose the anticipation and the enjoyment of activities that used to bring you happiness in the past, but no longer do so. you eat at your favorite restaurant , and the food tastes like 'meh'. you go out with your best mates, you can objectively acknowledge the fact that you like being with them, but deep inside , you're counting the time to just go home because you're not having any enjoyment of being there with them - you brain is fucked.
anhedonic individuals-when asked about how the feel, often describe it with the common answers of 'dead inside' and 'feeling numb'.
In anhedonia, music loses its rhyme, food loses its taste, work loses its meaning, relationships lose their spark and sex loses its sexiness. It is like depression, but without the intense pain.
so how did we get here?
Tanith carey explains in the book how the human brain was created to help us survive in an ancient world and environment that was much different from the one we live ine today. happiness is not a priority for that brain we have, survival and reproduction are. Turns out that what we believe in the modern world about our right to just exist happily is super flase. hapiness is made by action and effort , it does not come for free , or by chasing modern stupid shit like degrees, marriages , cars and other toys. if you wanna feel happy, then you gotta make yourself happy. the first step to doing so is by understand how the brain works and then acting upon the knowledge we have around its workings
Carey expalains how happiness chemicals and sex hormones work and affect different pleasures , and how the modern world messes up with them and 'hijacks' them. she gives amazing advice on how to regulate dopammine, serotonin , endorphin, oxytocin, oestrogen and testosterone - so that they dont fuck with our mood and well being once we take control of them
the book preaches many tools to boost happiness : behavioural activation therapy, time in nature, planning trips, cold exposure, diet and sleep tips, decluttering our living spaces and giving the reward system a break by staying away from the overstimulating garbage of the modern world. All are solid things we all know of, but need to be reminded of doing because we are too stupid that we tend to forget the importance of living like a normal fucking human for our mental health
Amazing book. thank god I found it early when I started to feel the symptoms of this condition in my own life recently.
