“I don’t know what I’m being,” I say. “A pair of eyes, perhaps. Seeing beauty. And love, too. Love and beauty—that sounds like the poet, doesn’t it? Or the painter. Or the Theologian, if he’s really concerned with Theos.” ~Sheldon Vanuaken.

O friends!
This book is the Song of Solomon (yet not all is perfect).

I was just in lynchburg va, standing at the place whre the Vanauken's chose to have their ashes spread, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. This couple's legacy is extremely touching.

This is my second book from Sheldon, following A Severe Mercy.

This book has the glory of heaven in it, yet, yet I would be more thoughtful in who i recommend it to.
It is extremely sensual (in both marriage, as well as in the "natural and organic" type of relationship the main characters reveal (I wonder how much of Sheldon and Davy's relationship is revealed in this). This drama is truly a lovely and redeemed response of the "free love" movement, with amazing kinship and communities revealed in it. It carries the nostalgia of heaven and a romance alternative from the sexual revolution (with ties to our modern era, and, as the last chapters witness, still relevant in asking "what is marrage").

I love Sheldon's perspective; at times, as a Christian, I hope for a certain type of "boldness" from him, yet he remained in the lovingness of the grey area.
