Waiting Jackals

The world has ended.
No, we don't have time for another scotch.

The awaited second installment in the acclaimed GREY ZOMBIE SURVIVAL Series by Ian DG Sandusky.

---
THE WORLD ENGULFED IN FLAMES

The infection has spread. The era of civilization has come to a close. Those consumed by the blight rove the Ontario wasteland, hungry for the flesh of survivors.

THE END TIMES ARE UPON US

Carey Cardinal and Keila Tindall have escaped New Braniff with their lives, but at what price, and for how long - none can say. Following the retreat of the decimated Canadian Forces, they find themselves in one of the last vestiges of humanity - Forward-Base Alexander. Only two other battalions remain - Camp Robinson to the north, and the fabled C-SOR JACKALS.

SURVIVING THE OUTBREAK WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING

The winds of fate blow without heed, sending past friends, new opponents and faint hopes into their path, clouding the already hazed road ahead. A solitary thread, taut to the breaking point, links them to the ones they seek.

Only one thing is Eventually, everyone dies.
It's only a matter of how soon, and at which teeth.

Once again I would like to heap praise on Ian Sandusky; I really enjoyed this novel and cannot wait to read the next installment. A few days after reading, I had to revise my initial judgement of this novel; initially, I only awarded it 3 stars, as I felt that it felt like a full length novel merely bridging the gap between Grey Dogs and the novel that will follow Waiting jackals, with no real plot of its own. However, with a few days to think on it, I realised that this was actually a fabulous second installment, as it has made me practically froth at the mouth waiting for the final installment and to see what happens. I thought the characters a little less compelling (having done most of their growing in the first novel), but with hindsight, I think that Sandusky just added depth to the characters, that I didn't necessarily like, bringing out more of their flaws and selfishness, making me a little frustrated with them!

In comparison to the first novel, which stood alone quite well, this seems to be leading up to an explosive ending (or at least I hope!). I missed the 'split perspective' of paragraphs from the different characters' points of view, and felt that there were several minor discrepancies, (the main one that stands out in my mind being how Carey managed to be a full year younger in the second book than in the first!!). Still a very enjoyable read, but just a good book, as opposed to the masterpiece the first novel of the trilogy was! I have very high hopes for the conclusion, and cannot wait to read it!
