In an interracial romance that tests the boundaries of love, Shay Cooper is a young woman soon to begin her career as a magazine publisher when she spends a sex-charged night with hunky millionaire Matty Driscoll. Although it was supposed to be a one-night affair, and both accepted it as such, Shay finds herself in a bind and Matty comes to her rescue. Soon, she is unable to stop thinking about the man who would become her first and only love.
Matty Driscoll has had his share of women, but when he spends a stormy night with Shay, he soon discovers that this young innocent is able to rock his world in ways that no other woman can.
Matty and Shay find themselves drawn to each other in such a powerful, dynamic way that it overtakes them both. At first they believe it is their wonderful sexual connection that keeps them unable to get enough of each other, but then they quickly realize that it is their emotional connection, their love and concern for each other, that turns out to be their real attraction. But just when they are about to take their relationship to that next level, Matty’s ex-girlfriend enters the picture with devastating news that forever changes the entire trajectory of their lives. And Shay has a secret too: she’s pregnant with Matty’s child. But the news he receives from his ex makes it impossible for her to reveal that truth to him.
Years later, when Shay’s magazine is in danger of going under and she is in need of a backer, Matty reenters her life to help her professionally. But when he finds out he has a son, and his son is in dire trouble, he is ready to move heaven and earth to have his son, and Shay, with him forever. But time changes things, and only time will tell if Matty and Shay’s love is enough to withstand the drama, the obstacles, thrown in their path. .

I really was into this book when I began it. I liked the initial coming together of Shay & Matty's relationship, I liked Shay overall and I thought the drama with selfish folks trying to mess them up had potential to make it really interesting. And then bam, this book just went off the rails. I have two major gripes and a nitpick.
Gripe 1: Matty is a sucker. Big time. I can't get past that even now that I've finished the book. Sometimes you read a book, the hero screws up but by the end he's redeemed himself. I didn't get that with Matty (plus you don't get to really READ about it since there was more of a 'tell, not show' quality to how things played out with the mess he made of things with his dumb choices). Not that Matty is a bad guy nor a douchebag, but he makes some RIDICULOUSLY STUPID choices that are OBVIOUS TO STEVIE WONDER that he's being a fool about and it made me want to reach through my kindle to smack him a la Cher in 'Moonstruck'.
Gripe 2: The first half of the book is really enjoyable but the latter half when the Matty & Shay reconnect is a hot mess. The pacing is off, the story felt rushed and by the end of the book, I was irritated that she hadn't either made it longer or turned in to a two-parter, with the initial relationship as the first book and the reconnection as the second book. After reading several of the "President's GF" books and "Romancing the Mob Boss" series by Mallory Monroe, I am flabbergasted that she didn't turn this into a series or a duo because this begged for it, if only to even out the pacing and story quality.
Nitpick: I've become forgiving of editing mistakes on ebooks. For whatever reason they seem more prolific in ebooks than in print books, but I've learned to cringe and move on quickly. That said, I can forgive Mallory Monroe for several "You was..." statements from the characters, though I found it highly doubtful that Matty would speak as such, but I refuse to forgive reading "deafly ill". NO. It is deathly. Deathly deathly DEATHLY.
Ok, all that said, it's not a bad book, even with the messiness of the 2nd half of the story but it is not as well-written as her other stuff.
This book received a one start for one reason only...the female lead was ridiculously annoying! I love reading about inter-racial romance but this book was really difficult to get through. Im guessing the author wanted the female lead to "sound black" which i don't really understand. This character was supposedly really intelligent and attending a prestigious school but talked and behaved like she was the worlds most ignorant woman ever...and this apparently did it for the super hot billionaire white male lead...if she was supposed to be smart just let her be smart.
“For real, though. I don’t know why Les keeps him around, but he does. Not good
business in my view, I mean really. But word around the Gap is that he and JJ a little more
than friends, if you dig where I’m coming from.”

This passage was enough to make me stop reading for a while... And the constant use of "nall" instead of "No" drove me nuts!
3.5 star rating.....This book started out really good but there were a few things that seemed a little rushed to me.....I won't go into to much detail cause I don't wanna give anything away for those who might not have read it yet but Matty let Alex play him like a punk way to many times cause I wouldn't have taken her word for anything and the sixteen year gap was a bit much too.....This could have easily been a 5 star read cause Matty really showed that he truly loved Shay and would have been there for her.....he had proven that many times thru out the story.....Good read!!!
Mallory Monroe i was wondering why you portray African American Women as brainless whores who spread their legs for anyone anywhere... with out protection. And what is your obsession with one night stands.....books like these are the reason the stereotypes of African American Women SEEM TRUE... please treat your characters with class....this book and the presidents girlfriend series and the mob series ... all trash ..i know better now i will by pass your books in the future... i am tried of your TSTL heroines and shameless male characters.
I started reading Mrs Monroe novels with the missions series and then dutch and gina on to the Gabriela and Sinatra s. I have just now read this wonderful story and can see the growth in Mrs Monroe's writing. Although I lol at the bathroom scene after the passion when the hero cleans his lady and does a repeat of the passion. That is a signature scene I take it. However I enjoyed this book immensely I could use a revisit on deandre some time in the future.
Matty had an attraction to Shania Cooper, the beautiful college student truck stop waitress. When he rescued her one stormy evening, they made a connection that unbeknownst to them, would transcend time. Matty Driscoll, CEO of CSI, found himself coming to the rescue of the young woman he was falling hard for. Shay was raised in the streets, but she still had an air of street-wise wisdom and innocence about her. When her Dean of Students, Matty's ex, Dr. Alex Graham plotted to get him away from Shay, she decided to remove herself from Matty's life so he would not be more stressed with a dying partner, or so they thought.
God does not like ugly as the old folks say. What you do in the dark will always come to the light to be revealed. Their lives came back together in the nick of time to save DeAndre and each other. Neither one was living a life without the other. Now they can finally settle into their long-awaited HEA.
I enjoyed this story. I can't believe the lengths some people would go to to get their selfish way. Alex was definitely a selfish unempathetic boogie beotch. Shay's roommate was just as selfish and I believe in time she would have been just as scheming as Alex. Hector lost his mind when he didn't get what he wanted. Poor DeAndre had a come to Jesus moment when he finally got what his mother was telling him.
I believe that this book was one of the first few that my favorite author, Mallory Monroe had written. I am a fan of her Mob Boss Series Books (Reno, Mick the Tick, etc.) and decided to read this one that was written a long time ago by Ms. Monroe. I had a very hard time finishing it! I am not a fan of naive college students and the said student being "romanced" by a thirty-three year old man and his involvement with the dean, too. (I work at a community college so I hope you get where I am coming from!) This book was a bit disappointing.
I enjoyed this book. I wish it could have been a little bit longer, but the storyline was enjoyable and I loved that Matty and Shay’s love endured the test of time.
A good read . As with all Ms Monroe's books excellent storytelling with enough twists and turns to keep you cheering and crying for the main characters.
Ok. This book started well. But the author skips ahead 16 YEARS??????!!!! Matty is 49 going on 50. I don't wanna read about 50 year olds having sex. That lapse was just too long for me. I couldn't finish it. I wouldn't want to anyway, this is a 16-year-long miscommunication. A child's emotions are at stake. The author fucked up on this one to me.
