Pseudonim powstańczy - Jupiter, po wojnie znany jako Papcio Chmiel. Polski grafik, rysownik i publicysta. Uczestnik powstania warszawskiego w 7. Pułku Piechoty AK "Garłuch", odznaczony Warszawskim Krzyżem Powstańczym, po wojnie artylerzysta w Wojsku Polskim, kawaler Orderu Uśmiechu.
Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski, better known under his pseudonym “Papcio Chmiel”, was a veteran insurgent of the Warsaw Uprising and avid supporter of the Polonia Warszawa sports club. He achieved fame and numerous awards for his work as artist and writer of the celebrated comics called Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek.
The series, aimed primarily at children and teenagers, debuted in 1957 as a strip in a youth magazine, though back then it featured only two protagonists: Boy Scouts Romek and A’Tomek. They were joined by talking chimpanzee Tytus de Zoo in the second issue. By 1966 the tremendous trio received their own book of comics, dedicated solely to their escapades.
Księga XI – Ochrona zabytków (Book XI – Historic preservation), also known as “Tytus ratuje zabytki” (Tytus saves historical monuments), was published in 1977 as the first book of the series printed in full colour already in its first edition. Besides the expected educational messages, we see plenty of outlandish and supernatural adventures in this issue as the trio travel through time.
With its charming art style, witty dialogues, and wholesome content, it is no wonder that Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek became a hit, cementing its honourable place alongside the later French classic Astérix et Obélix as well as Kajko i Kokosz (the Polish comic that it inspired) as publications that practically all Poles know and love.
Tytus, Romek and A’Tomek continue to find new readers across age groups, just as they did in the 1960s or the 2000s, and hopefully they will carry on being a link that connects different generations.
