Now, how I feel about Love Struck can be summed up like this: when Kelli got entrapped by the thought of a new book by Melissa Marr, she was forced to be satisfied with an estimated less than twenty pages of new material, coupled with excerpts from the Wicked Lovely books. This reinforced my preconceived notions of not liking novellas due to their brevity...and the packaging of a super-short story with previously published material made me feel gypped.
And that is my problem with Love Struck: I really enjoyed Alana and Murrin's story, although it was so short. I love the way Marr writes with such descriptive imagery and emotions that jump off the page. I would have much, much preferred to have the entire novella encompass their story instead of the chapters from Wicked Lovely and Ink Exchange.
I am so glad I didn't buy this one, because I would have been mad. The story took me maybe twenty minutes to read...not worth a buy but still worth a read if you can get it from your library.
A really cute faerie-human romance story. Because it's a short story and not a full length novel like the Wicked Lovely series, it seems a little rushed and simplistic, but at the same time it's very sweet and shows that Marr's characters are still thinking outside the "faerie box." Overall a good story and I definitely recommend it as a short read.
Genre: Short-Story | Young Adult | Paranormal Romance
Alana knows the legends of selchies, the sea-fey who leave their seal-like pelts behind when they walk on land, passing for humans. But she never imagined she would meet one—let alone two—on the night of an otherwise forgettable beach party.
The selchie Murrin, though, has long imagined actually meeting Alana, the girl he has chosen over the sea. He never expected that the meeting would be so complicated, or that an old rivalry would make winning Alana's trust—and love—so difficult. Alana is a head-strong girl who knows what she wants in a relationship and she especially knows she doesn't wish to turn out like her mother. Thus she sets up stick rules when dating (ex. no 'eye-candy', six month limit, no visits to the bedroom, etc.) When she meets a selchie (selkie?) on the beach one night, she is enchanted into taking his pelt but has major remorse when he comes to find her shortly thereafter. Can a relationship truly bloom when there's so much against it?
This was an okay read. It's a quickie, but an enjoyable folkloric tale that mostly focuses on the beginnings of a relationship. Murrin comes off as quite sincere and very grounded in his beliefs that a bond (ie. marriage in his eyes) could really work between himself and Alana. On the flip side, Alana is freaking out. From the beginning she feels trapped by his affections and is constantly looking for a way to sever their union. It takes her awhile to become accustomed to their friendship, but when she does finally accept what is between them, trouble a brews, and their bond is emotionally shattered. The end is sweet though and poignant for them both.
Likes: Alana is stubborn but very realistic as well. She's a great lead due to her maturity and knows what her future has planned for her (more school before marriage) and that's a hard thing to find in many YA stories where the romance seems to overshadow everything else.
Dislikes: I'm not a fan of short stories or anthologies (too short!), but the subject matter caught my attention and I just had to check out this story. Plus, I would have liked to learn more about how Murrin came to the decision that Alana was the one for him before coming to shore.
Short, but endearing and sweet. Melissa Marr has such an incredible ability to enchant readers with her stories and characters. She isn't my favorite author for nothing! I appreciate the strength she allows her female characters to share. Her stories are not only about getting the guy, but about finding and not losing oneself in the process. Bravo Melissa!
A cute story! I liked the new twist of a mermaid-like story, but it involved an ocean animal. It was def not what I expected and in a good way! :) I was also not expecting it to end so suddenly, it felt like the story had just begun, but it was still an interesting read.
I read this last year in Melissa Marr's Faery Tales and Nightmares short story collection, and I have found myself always going back and rereading this story again and again. Most short stories leave me either disappointed or content. But with this story, I was left craving more. I wish it was expanded on and made into a full-length novel is how much I love this story. The lore of the selchies in this story is actually an interesting change to the myth that I think is better and should be what actually happens with selchies and humans. This story also switches it where the selchie is male and the human is female. The dual perspective coupled with Melissa's emotive writing, has you invested in the relationship between Alana and Murrin, leaving you conflicted as there is an element of subtle horror to their situation (especially on Alana's end).
Now, I known of Melissa Marr for a while now. I have been told to read her Wickedly Lovely series. I actually won a copy of Wickedly Lovely &, before that, I bought the old UK hardback copy of Ink Exchange, so the start of this five book series is in my To Read pile. It's just a case of FINDING TIME!!! So, when I was having my Kindle-binge, I rediscovered that this was on my Kindle and, wanting to see if the Wickedly Lovely series was one I should investigate further, I selected this and read.
Love Struck is a one-off short story about Alana, who knows about the mysterious selchies, sea-fey who leave their seal-like pelts behind when they walk on land, passing for humans. But when she meets not only one but two at a beach party, she has no idea how complicated her life is going to be...
Now, this is a different read for me as I have never heard of selchies! I heard of something similar, but this felt like I was discovering something completely new. And the story between Alana and Murrin was slow and sweet. It didn't feel like other paranormal tween stories where the human and the supernatural being fall INSTANTLY in love. They didn't. It took them several weeks for them to find that they have feelings for each other and the events to unfold...
The only thing that bothered me is that the story was only 62%. The rest was the first chapters of Wickedly Lovely and Ink Exchange. I know I'm being picky and, of course, this is a VERY CLEVER marketing tool for people who haven't read (or heard) of Wickedly Lovely (like myself), but surely people who have heard and read Wickedly Lovely would read this. Maybe I wish that the story was a few percent longer...
But this is a nice, fun read and, for 99p, it's a good read! And, one day, I will make time to read Wickedly Lovely...
This is a very short story, shorter than I thought, given that it had bonus chapters for Wicked Lovely at the end.
Personally, I'm a bit uncomfortable with the idea of a seal falling in love with a human, and changing form. Just think about it for a minute. Same with werewolves. They are animals. Does nobody realize this? Come on, people, it's weird.
That being said, the story is so short that it's hard to form any strong feelings for the characters.
Murrin, the Selkie-turned-human love interest (the only love interest), traps Alana (normal, teenage human) when she steps on his selkie pelt. In doing so, he has claimed her as his "mate," read as wife. Because this is how relationships work with mythical creatures, once she's been claimed she cannot be freed unless Selkie-hubby finds his pelt (which she is compelled to hide from him), if he's angry enough to look for it after she hits him three times. As Murrin put it, "You can't help hiding it, and I can't search for it without cause."
There's very little substance to the story. There's a lot of telling, and not enough showing. Three weeks pass and you're only told that she no longer resents him for forcing this on her, and that they've become friends. There is so much that you miss when you cut through developments like that. It really lowers the overall quality of the story. Speaking of quality, there were some grammar mistakes that I noticed, that I just couldn't ignore. Also, "luscious" should never be used when describing a man. It is second only to "delicious." These are no-no's. Don't do it.
Okay, so as a new fan of Melissa Marr I was excited to see that this short I needed to read was written by her! I just finished Carnival of Souls and I was very impressed with her writing style, and Love Struck was just as impressive. Wish it could be a full-length book!!
I imagine it's quite hard to make a far-fetched story line seem realistic even when you have a couple hundred pages to work with, so creating a believable fantasy short must be incredibly challenging. But, despite a plot that is so far apart from reality, I really enjoyed Marr's take on it. Love Struck is the story of a teenaged girl named Alana who finds herself linked as mate to a handsome selchie when she accidentally takes his pelt. Having been told stories of the selchie by her Nonny, Alana doesn't trust Murrin and feels that he has trapped her. She doesn't realize that he's been watching her, planning to win her love and make her his wife. Even though this romance had to be rushed, I still loved Alana and Murrin and wished that they could find happiness together. There are a few twists that add that little bit of heartbreak that we all love, and I loved the way it all played out. Great short story that just shows again how much Marr can reel her readers in!!
Love Struck is where Alana meets a Selchie aka Selkie aka Silkie aka a magical being who shifts from Seal to human. The lore has been that Silkies shed their seal skin to kidnap a lover and takes them back to see with them or binds them and live on land together. Either way it never seems like the ideal love situation, you knowing being forced into a love situation. BUT ANYWAY! Alana accidently steps on Murrin's skin and just like that they are magically bound to one another.
The rest of the story is one where Murrin works on earning Alana's trust, friendship, and love but not without some obstacles. JUST READ TO GET THE DEETS!
I think what I liked most about this story was the message that love does not have to be complicated and that there is no need to self sabotage, making something that is right so wrong. Alana had to learn to allow happiness and love into her life. Love does not have to be complicated... it's not always perfect, more often than not this is the case but it should never be complicated.
At any rate I say read it! This story made me want to read more stories where Silkies were involved. It was a nice change. :-)
Okay so you probably think if you've seen any of my other reviews that I like giving 5 stars and honestly I would have a hard time giving anything else to Melissa Marr's work and she doesn't disappoint in this short work Love Struck..
Alana is in highschool has mom who falls in love all the time so her opinion of the feeling isn't high. Shes at a party one night when a out of the world gorgeous man approaches and tries coming in to her she's having none of it and heads the other way after his dire warning that another is coming who's worse. She doesn't know what to do but go in the other direction only to stumble on the very thing she was trying to escape.
Murrin hadn't wanted them to meet this way, he had wanted something different more even for his life and his intended. He wanted more from Alana not her resentment which he got plenty of but her love which requires time and trust. These are things selkies don't often receive, but could they?
Vix is the catalyst that set these to off and unwittingly is the one who will bring them together.
He is a fey. A selchie. A fey that can change from seal to human form. Murrin intends to woo and date his mate, instead of going by tradition, but that all changes when Alana happens upon his Other-skin, his pelt.
It was just another normal day when Alana accidentally happens upon the selchie skin and entraps herself to him. Now, she is trapped with the selchie. Left with no choice but to have him around and hide his skin that takes away his freedom and from the sea that he longs for.
I liked that it was explained what selchie are because I had no idea before I read this story. It is a cute romance between human a fey. It was nice that love does not happen right away, but glad that it has a happy ending. I also liked there were obstacles in the way of their love but they were able to be together in the end. I was also glad that the character did not change because of love. They did not have to change for their love. They could be themselves and not give up what they love or dream to do.
This one left me really wanting more. Unlike Stopping Time and Old Habits, where I was content to leave it at a small snippet of a moment in time, here I just wanted more of the couple. I fully enjoyed every word of this story and want more. I can only hope that she revisits them in some other book at a later date.
Also, that fact that we dipped into the water fey in this story, pun very much intended, left me happy. It's nice to see an author take a swerve into left field to let us know she can still surprise us.
Once again, lack of a print version leaves me giving this 4 stars instead of 5. Marr is an author of the calibur that she can get what she wants in print. I dislike this idea of making people get e-book readers to be able to access her full body of work.
Oh why did this story need to be so short?? And why did it need to end?? As usual, Melissa created a beautiful world that I wanted to just jump into and be a part of. The story was a very quick read because it draws you in from the first few sentences. I have to admit, I read it when I was supposed to be working.
I loved the characters and the fact that the setting was the ocean just made it even more intriguing. I really enjoyed Alana's quick wit and Murrin was utterly edible. The only thing that I wish is that the story had been about a hundred times longer. I could live in the world of the selchie. Bravo Melissa! Maybe you'll expand this someday????
I really liked this story! I have read the Wicked Lovely series and LOVED it so when I saw Love Struck by Melissa Marr, I just knew it had to be good. I was wrong, it was GREAT! The only part I didn't like was how quick it ended. Kind of like Melissa got tired of writing it and decided she had enough and The End. Don't get me wrong, there was closure to the story, it just seemed to stop at the end when it could have gone on a little more to tie up some loose ends.
Regardless, I would highly recommend this short story. It has a feel good sense to it and everyone can have a little Soul Mate love story once in awhile.
As short pieces go, this is one of my favourites. There is certainly enough here to adapt to a longer piece, but all in all I found this very satisfying. My one complaint is that the female protagonist's desire to remain single and unattached was depicted as a negative quality. Typically this author is all for people having the right to dictate their own lives, so that startled me a bit and put me off the work in my first cursory attempt to read it. I'm glad I went back again to read it a second time, because I did enjoy it, once I got past that.
I was expecting more from Melissa Marr. This is a "ok" love story, but nothing more than that. Sweet (maybe a bit too sweet) but unexciting. I've read fanfiction that was better than this.
Also, the ending where the main character talks about finishing high school threw me off somehow. From all her behavior in the story and from the way her mother was treating her I expected a woman in early 20s, not a high school girl.
Meh. So disappointing. Could've been so much better. *sigh*
Cute little short story. I have a hard time reviewing short stories because I am so used to reading novels. They always tease me and leave me wanting more. A lot of time I find myself complaining about the lack of character development and plot complexity due to the length of the story not allowing it, but I find that those critiques aren't always fair.
So I'll just say this much; I liked it, wish it had gone a little further, but didn't regret reading it. Marr fans will enjoy it.
I thought this novella was done very well. The first page drew me in when Alana is approached by "Dreadlocks" or otherwise known as "Eye Candy." The setting is a beach party, which brings back lots of memories for me. When he approaches her, there is a real mystery about him and he gives her a warning, even though she doesn't want to look at him. Dreadlocks left her unnerved with her prior peace removed.(To finish tomorrow night...just realized I'm too tired to do this now.)
melissa marr's stories really are satisfying. no hanging end, no blunt love development, and a confronting conflict.
this book gives and inspiration to those who wants to have everything yet seems to see a wedge of choice that is blocking one from the other. as the story approached the end i thought their would have been no resolve and no compromise, yet somehow it all worked-out.
This was a quick read and it was very sweet. My only gripe was that just as soon as I really started caring about the characters it was over. I think it would have been interesting to read this as a more fleshed out story. I've always been fascinated by the selkie myths and legends. All in all it was enjoyable and I'm glad I took the time to read it.
I love fairies!! that's why I do read books about them, this one is not ordinary and I would say oh-so romantic.. I like how the female protagonist is like Aislinn (from Wicked Lovely) who does not trust easily but, heehees, can't help her attraction to the male protagonist.. I hope it's longer coz, I'm craving for more.. >.<...
