++Spoilers++
This is a tough one to rate, so I went up the middle with a 3 star.
I love this authors historical romances, and this is the first one of hers I have read that was not.
First, I want to say that this is not a hard core sci-fi read, It's more like a contemporary romance with aliens.
One of the things that I found a bit strange is the non MC aliens in the beginning of the book. They kinda reminded me of the old Star Trek creatures or like the original Star Wars guys in the bar scene with Hans Solo. A bit old fashioned sci-fi in their description. But it was kinda unique and it was only in the beginning so it was easily overlooked.
I'm not a big fan of contemporary romance, and I'm not sure if this is part of the reason I was unable to connect with the H & h, it probably is to some degree, but I think the biggest part that made me lose the feeling is the constant mentioning of the heroine's deceased first husband. It was too much. I don't generally read books with the dead ex theme or when there is an element of an old love in the past. I prefer that the H&h only ever loved each other, I also have a hard time grasping at how one can love two people. I like the fantasy of there ever only being one true soul mate.
Anyway, I just didn't "feel it" between the H & h here. It felt more like lust than love.
Lastly, although I absolutely LOVE beta heros.. here, he seemed too benign.. almost feminine in his personality. The heroine was far more dominant and it was weird to me.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the hero, he was perfect, but there was just something missing.
As far as sex goes.. the author has gotten much spicer with these scenes which I like, but they still need work.
I still plan on reading the next book which seems more promising with Lexie and Mark.
