I cannot WAIT for Wu Xie and Xiao Hua to tear everything down and set it on fire.

Meh, DNF around the 30% mark I think? This series is too off the rails and the fan translations aren't clarifying anything. Think I'm done with the tombs, but what a fun fandom of drama fans.

Note: 2019 Reread via audiobook narrated by 周建龙 -- with exception to his mispronunciation of 解(jie)语花 as 解(xie) and also his weird choice of what XiaoHua sounds like, it's a very good narration!

2015:

This book hurts so much. From Wu Xie's frequent thoughts of Pangzi and Kylin during his mission with XiaoHua, how he'd realise he'd always relied on them and how they would protect him, to calling Panzi and finding the state of his Uncle's territories. Before now, I had always felt excitement and anticipation towards what would happen next, now there is also a heavy sense of dread of what is to come.

To be honest, I don't understand why I had stopped at this volume a year ago. The book started off quite amusing, with the trio in suits and the way they wrecked havoc at the auction. Xiaohua is a great addition to the cast, someone who I have heard of heaps of times before, and he was definitely as amusing and as fun to read as I hoped. His whole "every man for himself" belief brings a new perspective to the whole tomb raiding business, but it's his jokes and his smirks that really brings out the best of this character.

Regarding the mystery aspects of this volume, let's just say they lost me before halfway. I can't tell if that was intentional or because I keep missing details in Chinese, but I just hope it gets cleared up in the Finale. (Not that I truly understand what exactly the mystery is).

All in all, I can't wait to read the next book. I have no doubt it will be painful, but at the same time, I excitedly await the reappearance of XiaoHua and HeiXiaZi, as well as the transformation of Wu Xie. Even if it won't happen in this series, I can only hope that the author will be willing to write a well-deserved happy ending for these guys in the end.

So this is the one where they're trashing the Xinyue restaurant, which is always one of my favorite scenes in the adaptations :D

UN has definitely spoiled my in regards of Iron Triangle and Hei Xiazi content lol. Xiazi doesn't even make an appearance here and Wu Xie gets in contact with Xiao Hua waaaay later than in the drama.

I was surprised that Xiaoge gets the new sword from Huo Xiuxiu and Granny Huo, when I'm pretty sure in UN Wu Xie gets it for him.

The part with Wu Xie and Xiao Hua's solo adventure stretches a bit imho, but there's a lot of bonding between them, so all good :)

The book pretty much ends where UN does - sooo off to uncharted waters I go now lol (as if I didn't know *exactly* what's waiting for me behind that door) (sorry)

Firstly I want to thank MereBear, who was so kind to go through so many difficulties to translate this. And honestly, reading this was way more pleasing than reading the first one or two 'official' translations.
It's really rare for me to finish a book within weeks rather than months so...
This part of the series was really thrilling to read and I can't wait to continue with the next book.
Can't help but love the Iron Triangle! <3

A fan whose consumed all the dramas and moved on to the original book content.

Overall, Ultimate Note follow the events of this volume quite closely with a few differences.

A wild Xiao Hua FINALLY makes his appearance in this volume! While Ultimate Note introduces Xiao Hua as the team begins their trek into Tamutou, the book series doesn't introduce him until quite a while after those events. I enjoy his earlier introduction because it gives us more time to get to know and love him. In contrast to the drama, Wu Xie and Xiao Hua's interactions are a little more tense and the latter's intentions a bit more ambiguous. In many ways, this made Xiao Hua and the relationship between him and Wuxie more interesting and dynamic. It was a lot of fun being in Wu Xie's mind as he tries to figure out what this guy is all about. As a PingXie fan, I'm actually surprised to say there seems to be more of a connection (& certainly more ship worthy content) between Wu Xie and Xiao Hua.

Speaking of PingXie, I have no idea if it's a translation issue which diminishes the subtleties of their connection or if the drama just really amps it up but....Compared to the drama, the relationship between these 2 characters still feels quite distant and cold. I think it's especially evident when compared to Ultimate Note which took the time to show soft moments between them and emphasized Xiao Ge's vulnerability and humanity. In this volume (& truthfully much of these books), Xiao Ge often fades into the background in a way that's impossible when the story is told through a visual medium. I wish Lei Xu took more time to treat Xiao Ge as a character rather than a plot device.

Apart from a vague reference, there is sadly no Hei Xiazi. The drama DEFINITELY spoiled us on that front. I'm beginning to wonder if he'll eventually have a bigger role or if the dramas extrapolated his entire character based on the brief appearances he's had up to this point.

This volume was very exposition heavy which made it quite difficult to digest at times. While this novel finally begins to delve into the history and mysteries that have been plaguing our characters, it also became clear to me that Lei Xu's strength is in his action scenes where our characters are moving and the story is progressing. It's curious to me how he'll sometimes gloss over certain happenings (rightfully assuming that the reader has no need or interest in being bogged down by particular content) but at other times will devote lengthy chapters to explain in excessive detail the working mechanisms of various traps within tombs. While explaining such things is necessary and potentially quite interesting, Lei Xu had a tendency to drag out such descriptions to an extent that left me confused and uninterested. That being said, when things were moving it was very exciting and Lei Xu delivers on the creepy and disturbing moments that can make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

This volume ends exactly where Ultimate Note does so the next 2 volumes will contain content that has yet to be adapted into a drama. I'm both excited for the new content and terrified because while I don't know the journey that lays ahead, I do know the final destination that awaits (if you know, you know).

Xiao Hua and Xiuxiu appear! It's so much fun to finally get more interactions with the Mystic Nine families and begin to see how everyone's stories all connect. It's time to expose It pulling all the strings 👀

I love the more investigative side happening in the books right now - chasing Uncle Three is over we need to uncover the answers to why this is all happening and how this ties in with Xiao Ge's past/family! But dealing with Granny Huo isn't so simple... aand Wu Xie's family has so effectively left him outhe basically has nk connections or status in the Mystic Nine besides his name... RIP.

In the second half Wu Xie is mostly without Xiao Ge and Pangzi. Usually I would be opposed to it, since I love the Iron Triangle, but actually this was the perfect time for Wu Xie to do some things without them and see how he's grown (or realize places he hasn't grown and has been relying on his friends to help with). This also brings out Xiao Hua and Wu Xie's friendship, which is nice!

The ending of the novel is so ominous, I'm hyped to see where this goes next! I am heading into the realm of unadapted novels now! (Well.... the next one is ready but still hasn't been released...either way, I don't have a full picture of what's next and that's exciting!)

So many secrets coming to light! Surprisingly little tomb raiding though.

As a series note, the sexism is annoying, but as another commenter said (possibly for another volume), Xu Lei can't usually be bothered to include women in the stories, so it's usually pretty minimal. Mixed blessings there. The fatphobia is more pervasive, and therefore more annoying, since one of the main characters is fat... and nicknamed Fats/Fatty, depending on the translation.

Anyway, onward!

I finally reached the part when the Iron Triangle went to Xin Yue Restaurant. This scene was very popular since it was shown three times in the drama adaptations. Also, the Zhang family mansion is very mysterious, I can't wait to read more. 4/5 stars
