Thanks to some experimental wizardry, Matt is out of Maggie’s head.
He’s in a golem body, to be precise. It’s not his body, but it’s an improvement on his previous situation.
Kind of. It’s going to take some time for his soul to acclimatize to an unfamiliar home. Until that happens, Matt will have to hope the awkwardness that comes with learning to operate his new body isn’t too much for everyone to handle.
An unsolicited case means there’s no time to worry about Matt’s temporary weirdness.
A traumatized woman shows up at Maggie’s office to report that some of the covens are being systematically hunted down.
Maggie and Matt aren’t in the PI business anymore, but this case is worth coming out of retirement for. However, things soon take a turn for the even weirder as the danger to the covens increases.
Maggie is determined to find out who’s behind it and take them down…
…just as soon as she figures out why she keeps running into two of her old enemies.

On the one hand, I’m very sorry to see this story come to a close. It has been a remarkable journey both through the lives of the characters and through Phillipa Norcross’ first works. Norcross has such a deft hand with her character’s’ emotional states and motivations that it still boggles my mind that this is her freshman foray, but there you have it, nonetheless.
I have always maintained that the best sci fi and fantasy novels are simply NOVELS which just so happen to be set in either a futuristic or fantastic setting. Books that are driven by their premise rather than the story or characters may be fun to read once, but those are the books that never make it into my library, and if there is more than one or if it’s a series, I seldom read any others. Now, just to be clear, based on this first series, I’ll be buying everything Norcross writes.
Getting back to this particular book, the “other hand,” is forced to recognize that there is only so much that can be done with these characters, and she’s explored most of it. I also recognize that she had to leave some dangling plot threads to enable future series, but one or two of them really should have been wrapped up before closing this (hopefully) first chapter. And when I say “one or two,” I’m really addressing one ENORMOUS plot thread that needed ultimate closure. But we didn’t get that. That’s the only reason I gave this four stars instead of five.
The writing is world-class, without a doubt, and the story line is compelling, engaging and absolutely everything one could want in a novel. But the lack of closure left me at the end with a bad taste in my mouth and wishing for just a tad bit more to get us there.
I really enjoyed this series, except for ... it ending right in the middle of the story line! Are we serious?!
The series ends with a battle won, sort of, but the main enemy is "hiding out to rest" and that's it. This someone from Maggies past has been a main character for the entire series, and his plans for the future have been the main plot for about half the series.
And it's left with all options open, no end, not even a badly written or hurried one, just -- the end, in the middle of the story.
As much as I loved the series, I won't be reading any more Philippa Norcross books as the apparently just end whenever :(
Maggie, Matt and the family are trying to figure out who the leader of the witch hunters is. When they finally find out who it is, it turns out to be someone from Maggie's past, and it's not good. This series is very good and I am sad to see it end, but am hoping that some of the lose ends get taken care of in the connecting series and that we see some of the characters again.
Congratulations to Phillipa Norcross and Michael Anderle for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such intexresting and exciting authors who not only write intelligently but also provide top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next series!!!!
This series keeps getting better and better. I had thought this was going to be the last book in the series and we would see the final confrontation between Maggie and Cole but now I realize we may have one more story coming and I can’t wait!
