It's fun to read books and magazines that were published decades ago. It gives you a perspective of the culture of the time period that you may not have been aware of, either because you were part of the culture and considered it to be the norm of the time, or because it's a snapshot of history that your parents were exposed to. Diane Von Furstenberg's Book of Beauty was published in 1976. This was the decade that published the first male centrefold in Cosmopolitan magazine and published Playgirl magazine. Diane Von Furtenberg's book has stood the test of time, with the exception of the chapters on cosmetic surgery, wigs and the emphasis on makeup. She presents a common sense approach to diet, moderate exercise, skin and nail care, all topics which are still relevant.
I read this book years ago when it was first published and just found a copy of it recently. On rereading it so many years later, I am surprised how many of the ideas DVF had then that are still appropriate today. It was like rediscovering an old friend!
I too stumbled upon this out of print book. There are a few gems in this book, especially in the first few chapters. This book is a little dated, but the strong independent woman streak is strong. I really enjoyed her "body moments" section, and the exercises are definitely a proto-type for pilates. I didn't agree with her sentiments on plastic surgery, kinda goes against the "accept you for who you are" messages. The diet section dragged on, and morphed into a text book on 1970's nutrition and calorie counting (skipped that section!). If you a fan of DVF, and her incredible shift dresses then you may enjoy this fluffy and short read.
