In these three volumes, beloved inspirational writer Joyce Sequichie Hifler offers help and encouragement drawn from the philosophy and history of the Cherokee and other tribes. A day-by-day guide, A Cherokee Feast of Days brings Native American philosophy to people of all faiths, and to those seeking faith. Rich in images drawn from the natural world, Hifler’s writing helps us feel our own kinship with the earth we inhabit, so that we may be in tune with the natural harmony of each changing season and may walk in the beauty of that harmony every day.
I tried a few times over the last couple years to read this daily. For some reason, I didn’t stick with it. This year I was determined more than ever to read it daily. I’m glad I did. Not only were the daily meditations inspiring, but I learned to look deep into myself. While doing that, I learned about myself along the way. I have always loved all things Native American and reading this was icing on the cake. The meditations were short (maybe 1/2 page or full page at the most) and gave just enough to the reader to think about all day. Although Goodreads has me finishing this on Dec. 30 due to the time difference, I actually finished this on Dec. 31.
This will be a constant read as it has daily spiritual readings, with the month and day. It is from Native Americans like Sitting Bull and other elders. It is inspiring, uplifting, and it amazes me how advanced these wonderful people were. It is too bad their ways weren't combined with other heritages to live very fulfilling and happy lives. I recommend this to everyone to read. ENJOY!
Here is a little taste of what is in the book---wow.
FEBRUARY 24th 'Worthy performances do not make us who we are, but little things and what we tell ourselves in the privacy of our own minds. We are what we see and what we believe is important. We are children to the end-- innocent in ways we do not understand, aware of our spiritual connections and afraid to develop them. What would people think? How will i explain that I no longer enter into those activities that are thought so clever? There's a world of things we do not have to explain. As much as we want others to understand and like us, if it takes us off our standing place into a world of unlikely places, then we flirt with disaster. No one can dictate to us if we are not listening. We will not lose our footing if we are not teetering. We are who we are by what we choose to cultivate, and all worthy performances are made up of very little parts. God made me an Indian. SITTING BULL 1876
a nice daily reader with native american inspired wisdom for each day. I bought a copy for a friend, not knowing until afterward that she has Cherokee forebearers.
The only daily meditation book I've ever kept up with and actually looked forward to reading. The meditations are short enough to fit in each and every day. They are applicable to daily life, timeless, and thought provoking. There is true wisdom in these readings. The book was given to me by a friend after our yoga instructor read from it during Savasana.
Reread - December, 2023 Still a great meditation book with many points for me, an alive person. Hifler does not nag, she presents the Cherokee version of good behavior and peacefulness. Many examples. A good read.
This is a delightful daily meditation book that is very realistic and very down-to-earth. It is easy reading and always has a point for the reader to use to become a better person. Many Native Americans are quoted and the Christian belief system is shared throughout. This tiny book also has lovely Native American motifs at the beginning of each month. Not only are the motifs drawn for us but there is information about the time it was used and about the tribe using it. Just an interesting sidelight along with Cherokee phrases that the author translates. The book made me a better person - probably can do the same for you.
I've had this little book for about 8 years, and I enjoy having a cup of coffee and read the meditation for the day and I carry it on my heart. It stays on my bedside table.
