Rate this book
Only 47 days left until Larry Durrant's execution, but lawyer Lac McElroy is determined to save his client's life.

There are only three small problems: the evidence against Durrant is overwhelming, he's made a full confession, and he wants to die...

But Jac's hungry to make his mark and he knows something just isn't right about Larry Durrant's murder conviction. Trouble is, everyone thinks Larry's guilty, from the Louisiana Governor right down to the accused, who has confessed to the crime and now wants to make peace with his maker.

Jac soon discovers that someone doesn't want anyone - especially a lawyer - digging around this case. And they'll stop at nothing to make sure Larry's execution goes ahead on schedule. Now Jac must decide whether he's prepared to risk his career, his reputation and his life to save a man who, by his own admission, is a murderer . . .

When DEATH is your only hope...

Ascension Day is the most exciting and compelling death-row thriller since The Shawshank Redemption.

Tense death row thriller

This book has a lot going for it, a very intriguing central plot, plenty of depth to the relationships between the characters, it's fraught with danger and tension, and has that death row deadline ticking ever closer. However, there is perhaps just a bit too much packed into it. Various sub-plots & character interaction, with too much detail to them, which makes the book overly long. Consequently it's fairly slow going to start with, but it's such a good story that when the pace does pick up and the tension builds, by the time you've reached the end, you'll just be grateful to have enjoyed a very good book.

3.5 stars, it could have been a 4 star but a bit too lengthy. A lot was happening in this book, so much that the beginning was confusing until you were able to place all the characters into the plot line. Otherwise I found the book to be a thriller, I found myself caught up in the race to save Larry and I didn’t realize how hooked I was until the climax.

Intense story of a lawyer trying to save the life of a death row prisoner who's ready to die. The convicted man confessed to the crime but still doesn't know if he really did it or not. The plot was intriguing, but it was a little disconcerting to read a book set in New Orleans written in British English. I had to shake my head at "tyres" on the vehicles on the streets of New Orleans and many other similar situations.

This is a very well-written book and for the first 62% (I read on a Kindle - hernce the percent) it was five-star. Unfortunately (at least for me),when the lawyer flees the scene of the crime, becomes a fugitive, and then dons a disguise to come back and finish the case (and no one recognizes him!!!), that was a littkle over the top for me. But still an enjoyable read.

I've been attempting to finish this for months, which is unlike me. I'm basically bored with it now. Quitting at 40%.

Glad I stuck with it

I was a bit putt off at first by the abrupt transitions between characters. I almost put the book down because it was a bit frustrating when the book seemed to jump between scenes with no warning. I am so glad I stuck with it! Once I figured it out, I could not put the book down. It was full of suspense right down to the last few pages. I look forward to reading more from this author.

This book is well written and fast paced enough to keep me reading (a freebie from BookBub) while I traveled. But once I stopped, I realized I wasn't learning anything from these characters or this story, and I haven't picked it up again. Too many mysteries and thrillers out there -- too little reading time!
