The Mahabharata is basically an encyclopedia to Hindu thought, culture, and beliefs. Throughout this great epic struggle, various side stories are found, such as Shakuntala, Deadly Dice Game, and The Bhagavad Gita, which are often considered or looked upon as Indian scripture. Most importantly, the theme of The Mahabharata is that a struggle of morality exists between good and evil in every day life and one must conquer this battle and gain moral merits.
