The Marriage Class - a Novel

Rate this book
One Class. Ten Couples. Ten Decisions.

Abi and Raymond are engaged to be married and have started marriage class. It's an exciting step in their journey to the altar...if you discount Abi's cold feet, and the resurfacing of her ex fiancé, her ex fiancé who is now married to someone else. Abi's heart is torn in two very different directions; the calm and steadfast love she has with Raymond, and the chaotic yet exciting passion she had with Lucas.

And they are not the only couple struggling.

In their fast-tracked marriage class, the nine other couples include a billionaire playboy reluctant to marry a third time, a couple engaged after a whirlwind romance and now struggling with the reality of getting to really know each other, a couple engaged after an almost two-decade-long relationship, a couple engaged after a surprise-and-not-exactly-desired pregnancy, a couple that met on social media but now differing about just how much of their relationship should be for the 'gram and how much should be private, a groom fifteen years younger than his bride, and a bride marrying a man she has never met.

By the end of the marriage class, all ten couples find themselves at a crossroads, their relationships tethered by one very key question.

Will they...or won't they?

I wanted all the couples to break up because why so chaotic??!! ✋🏿 at your big age?!

I am not mad at the couples that stayed together, even though I think the one couple won’t last. I am eternally pleased with the couples that broke up because you could just see that it was headed downhill.

I think the nice thing about this book is that all the characters were flawed and flawed people deserve love too . Except Raymond, he was perfect.
I will be reading Adesuwa’s entire catalogue. She’s an amazing writer and storyteller.
This would bang as a mini series

I enjoyed it! The storyline that resonated with me the most was Ivie and Eric’s passive romance situation.
I also hated how the doctor couple wasted 19 years of their lives wanting different things. Why do some women stick around for so long, even when it’s evident that it’s never going to work?
Okay let me not spoil it for y’all… it’s 10/10✅ read. If you’re looking to come out of your reading slump this is the best book. I finished in 2 days whilst still going about my busy schedule Please read ittt😃

It was an ok Read

At one point I was overwhelmed with the number of couples and their story . Couldn’t remember who was who at times. What this book lacked for me was excitement and plot twists. It’s was a nice read

I expected more since this is one of Adesuwa’s most talked-about books, but it didn’t give me the drama and character depth that most of her other books have. I had to read it twice to understand because there are a lot of characters and timelines.

Did I enjoy the book? Yeah, some parts. Would I reread it? I really doubt it.

Now to the couples:
1. Abi and Reymond:
Abi is still obsessed with her ex boyfriend thereby pushing away a very good man. I’m glad he left her.

2. Ewa and Sanya:
Ewa, the debtor influencer, and her ex-model fiancé.

3. April and Boma: Boma, the sapiosexual with a witty sense of humor, fell for April, who’s great in bed. He asked her to marry him two months after meeting.

4. Kris and Bola:
The couple with the unconventional age gap—Kris, the woman, is *older* than Bola.

5. AK and Chioma: AK (the guy) is very attractive, and Chioma (the lady) is quite normal-looking, even bland. This makes her very insecure, constantly seeking validation from AK.

6. Ogechi and Zulu:
Ogechi is a sophisticated, classy woman, while Zulu, on the other hand, is a local Igbo man (picture gold-shoes type of man).

7. Bianca and Prince:
Bianca is in an online relationship with Prince. They get engaged via FaceTime.

8. Eric and Ivie:
Eric has been married twice and doesn’t care for a third marriage, so Ivie gives him an ultimatum. He’s a changed man by the end.

9. Itse and Omasan:
They Met in their first year of medical school and have been dating for 19 years, but unfortunately, Omasan wants to date forever and not officially marry Itse.

10. Nosa and Nkoyo:
Just a casual office fling that turns into a pregnancy, making Nkoyo feel obligated to marry Nosa.

I don’t even know where to start, is it the fact that this book was extremely entertaining, dramatic and “chockehold-ish”, or the fact that almost all the characters pissed me off, most especially Eric, (sirrrrrr don’t even come near my abode because I know the number of insults I wrote in my book just for you 😡), then Ugechi, Abi and Itse (may we never meet anyone like you in real life 🤬, I would kill you myself),…

I really love how the snippets of the marriage lessons were portrayed and explained in the book too, with so many beautiful quotes.

I was blushing and laughing and SMH-ing the whole while, I can’t give anyone my copy of this book (unless the person is ready to laugh at every single written down word I scribbled in), in other words it is one of my priced possession.

Loved it!

Ps. As you start the 1st chapter carry your pen and paper to take note of each couple because I absolutely forgot who was who when I got to chapter 2, so I had to go back.

Couples go to group pre marital counseling sessions. None of them are in a good place. Some have to realize they really have no business being together where others have to lose what they have in order to appreciate what they had and make the necessary self adjustment.
First reading this when the couples go to counseling none of them needed to be getting married.
It’s funny how each couple had some comment to make about the other couples relationship like they didn’t have issues and were all just in the same room. I like that when it was asked how did each couple proposed the story was told how it really happened opposed to the lies they tell others.

Didn't keep me on the edge of my seat as I hoped.

I had a hard time getting to finish this book. Didn't really find it captivating. It was a book I thought would get me out of my reading slump but alas, it didn't help much in that regard. I hope I will enjoy the author's other books on her catalogue if I every decide to read her other works.

If you're looking for a light, laugh-out-loud read then this is one book to add to your tbr. The characters are witty and despite their shenanigans and poor choices, they'd have you laughing, pull your heartstrings, and make you root for them.

This is one brilliant writing coming from Adesuwa. Real life scenarios told with such finesse in the pages of a romance fiction. I enjoyed every bit of reading this. The author pulled this off real good👍👍

A good read. I love all the characters. I wanted more for Abi and Raymond. I think I got attracted to them more. This was a 3.5 star for me. First, I couldn’t keep up with all the couples. Second, I felt it could have been more. In all, this was a good read.

4.5 So good! This couple didn't need to get married! Matter of fact...none of them! Overall really great book. It had good pacing, the writing was good, and such a great look into all the reason why people get married(&maybe shouldn't get married).
