This nonfiction equivalent to the bestselling Waiting to Exhale and Wild Women Don't Wear No Blues showcases the frank, hopeful, and defiant voices of 26 African American women. Arranged by topic, these interviews on love, sex, and growing up in the African American culture examine both the positive and negative aspects of women's relationships with men. Love Awaits is a book that women will read...and recommend to others.
I liked and disliked this book. I am grateful to see another person's perspective. These women, by majority, were ghetto women. Most of them weren't ignorant.Yet, one woman I didn't like was Vanessa. She completely sold herself short. Two kids by two men and chooses to be the other woman. She seemed passive and unwilling to change for the better. She didn't have an understanding of karma, either. She thought because women catch a lot of heat from their boyfriends, it's better to be the other woman so you can get better treatment. I have long realized that karma is real and can destroy you if you're on the wrong side of it. The women I enjoyed were Lett, Hanaan, and Coco. They had sweeter dispositions, in addition to healthy insights. Too bad Courtney Long hasn't released a sequel.
I picked up this book from View Park Bebe Moore Campbell Library.
