Here's a bit about him...
James Sutherland was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, many, many, many years ago. So long ago, in fact, that he can't remember a single thing about it. The son of a musician, he moved around lots as a youngster, attending schools in the Isle of Man and Spain before returning to Stoke where he lurked until the age of 18. After going on to gain a French degree at Bangor University, North Wales, he toiled at a variety of regular office jobs before making a daring escape through a fire exit in order to concentrate on writing silly nonsense full-time. Happily married, James lives with his wife and daughter in a small but perfectly formed market town in Staffordshire. In his spare time, James enjoys playing his guitar, reading history books, and discussing the deep, philosophical mysteries of life with his goldfish, Tiffany.

What a delightful story...the first in the Norbert series. We are immediately introduced to Norbert as an aging horse who is owned by Farmer Finbar. Norbert now spends most of his time (perhaps all of his time) in a grassy field, eating (guess what) grass! Norbert has several friends. HIs most helpful friend (at least in this story) is Colin the Cuckoo who lives in the Sycamore tree that sits in the middle of Norbert's field. Norbert has problems remembering things and Colin (being a wise old bird) helps Norbert out from time to time to think back and to remember or to help Norbert solve situations/problems. In this story Norbert discoveres his teeth are green and wants them to be white again so he might impress the filly in the next field. Her name is Delilah.
Does Norbert get his teeth white again? How does he do it? You'll have to read this fine book to find out. I'm certain I'll be giving a hardback copy of book to my youngest Granddaughter - I'm sure she will really enjoy it.
Norbert was a cute story. Nothing over the top. A few chuckles here and there. The farmer, the horse and the cuckoo seem to work/flow together for this story.
A cute story about a misguided horse, his disgruntled cuckoo bird friend, and the beautiful horse living in the field next door. A great story for kids of all ages!
We have really enjoyed this story as a family today. I read it aloud in two sittings. Thanks so much for the laughs! Norbert is an old horse who looks in his trough one morning and is immediately scared by the reflection he sees thinking that it is another horse looking at him. He doesn't have the best of memories but does recall his friend Colin, the cuckoo, telling him that it is indeed only his reflection. Norbert tries to be brave and so 'grins' into the water. Imagine his shock when he discovers his teeth are green! He runs back to Colin in a panic demanding that Colin do something to help him clean his teeth so that Delilah, the young filly, in the next field will take more notice of him.
Colin reminds Norbert that to clean ones teeth, a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste are necessary. The antics that ensue as Colin goes to the farm house to retrieve the required "goods" from Farmer Finbar's bathroom are truly hilarious. The author describes the scene so well that your imagination can just "see" all that is happening. I am not going to spoil it for you by telling you! Suffice to say that Norbert gets his teeth cleaned but it does not net the results that he wanted.
This is a chapter book - 6 chapters in all with an epilogue so although our four year listened not sure how much he actually understood. Therefore I would recommend it for older children.
Any cons? That depends on your personal standards but here are a few points that I think might put some parents off and that is why I personally, see this book as a family read aloud, rather than allowing children to read this independently.
The phrase "Good Lord" is used in Chapter 4 when Farmer Finbar is talking to himself. If you are reading aloud you can change this to "Good Grief" or even leave it out without it being detrimental to the story.
In the same chapter the word "hell-bent" is used talking about the determination of the farmer.
If you do not like women being talked down about then the advice from Colin in Chapter 1 is thus: "I've told you before, Norbert, that women are a deadly and dangerous species which should not be allowed. Everyone knows that!"
If the mention of alcohol is a subject you do not want your children to be exposed to then in the epilogue avoid "What had happened? Had he been drinking a little too much home-made cider again?"
To some families all or some of the above will not matter but for those that it does matter to, I feel you need to know about it. I still give this book 5 stars as I believe for the most part that it is extremely well written. It is not dumbed down like so many kids books today. It grabs the attention, tickles the funny bone and is suitable for all ages, young and old!
This is a very fun-filled and silly book. The story is simple and shows the bonds of friendship, whether Colin, the cuckoo, likes it or not.
The story starts with an old horse named Norbert, who is extremely forgetful. He grazes in a favorite spot, under a sycamore tree, where Colin, a very wise cuckoo, lives. Though Colin proclaims Norbert is more bothersome to him than a friend, the story is very comical in nature as the delightful story unfolds.
Norbert is in love with Delilah, the filly who lives in the paddock next door. He believes in order to win her heart he must find a way to brush his very green, grass-strained teeth.
You'll love all the hilarious details of Norbert's situation. As the story is told the reader can picture every last scene in their mind. Check out James Sutherland's other fine reading materials as this book truly is a pleasure to read.
This was free for Kindle, might still be. If it is, check it out.
Norbert's green teeth are a problem; lucky he has a plan and his friend Colin.
Sutherland's book is supposedly for children, but there is enough sly humor and reference (Colin is named Colin for a reason) that even an adult will chuckle. If you have a horse crazy kid you have to read to, pick up this book. Enjoyable by all ages.
A quick, funny little book. I think I would need to read more books in the series in order to resolve some of my concerns such as the advice of Norberts friend, an old cuckoo, who tells him that women (a female horse) are horrible and should not be allowed. Advise Norbert does ignore.
Very cute children's book! Norbert is adorable, and the ending was hilarious! The bird and farmer are pretty doggone hilarious, too! Got it free from Kindle!
This entertaining and humorous story is about a horse, a cuckoo, and green teeth. The combination of the three had me laughing out loud at this very descriptive tale. Nice read.
This amusing story kept me entertained. It was a fair reading length without illustrations. The writing style is slightly passive. This is an ideal story for kids who love ponies.
