After dropping out of college and running away from home, a young girl named Ally finds herself the guest of a mysterious mansion. The building’s interior may seem beautiful but it houses a dangerous history that John and the other guests must keep hidden. Deadly traps lurk around each corner that kill without mercy. But the deaths of each victim although gruesome are not permanent.
“Well we do die… but then we come back” John informs Ally upon her arrival.
The stakes are raised when it becomes apparent that Ally is different from any other guest before. But will this difference ultimately result in her death or escape?
Ally, a college dropout, decides to leave town for nowhere in particular. When she become tired, she pulls over to take a nap when she is disturbed by a scream coming from a rickety old barn beside the road. When she enters the barn, she is shocked to find the interior is that of a huge mansion and that there are several other people inside who claim that not only can they not leave but that the house is full of dangerous and deadly traps but, although people can be killed, death inside this house is not permanent. But it is also clear to Ally that things are not what they seem and everyone in the house is keeping secrets. Can she escape or is she doomed to live and die in this house forever?
The story is told by two characters: Ally and David who claims he has been trapped in the house for five years and is quickly falling for Ally (or maybe not). This is a fast and easy read for the most part although I found it somewhat annoying at times as the characters seem to vacillate a lot in their speech and actions. It's kinda like 'I'm gonna escape' 'No I'm gonna stay' 'No I'm leaving" 'You should go', 'No stay'. After awhile, I just wanted someone, anyone, to go already. But, basically, I had only one other small quibble with the book - the word, basically, is used way too often in the book and I found it jarring, maybe because I use the word too often myself.
But, that aside, I enjoyed the book. It reminded me a lot of movies like The Cube. That's not a bad thing because I loved The Cube. Locked room scenarios are always fun and this one kept me guessing right until the end.
Without heading in any place in particular, Ally a recent college drop out, runs away and ends up in a house that brings guests back to life after they die. The house is dangerous, and the other guests claim there is no way out. But for Ally, this strange nightmare of a house may not be what the others make it appear and she must find out who she can trust in order to find a way out of the purgatory she so casually walked into. The story is told through 2 different perspectives, Ally's and David. David has been in the house for years. He starts falling for Ally as soon as she arrives. He wants to protect her, but he is conflicted in his decisions. And there is a problem named Jane that is out to get Ally. The story was set at a good pace. It didn't move too fast, and it didn't bore with unnecessary details. It was a quick read that made you want to keep turning the pages. The end felt a bit predictable for the circumstances, but at the same time those circumstances were unexpected...if that makes sense. I was drawn to the cover on this book, and I liked the concept. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this one because the concept didn't fall flat of what I expected the book to be. Oh, and I was also surprised to see that the author is currently going to Central Michigan University. If I would have chosen a different degree that is probably where I would have ended up going :) I am from the mid-Michigan area, so I always try to keep a look out for local authors and artists that spark my interest. I won this book from a goodreads giveaway.
