Claymore, Vol. 19: Phantoms in the Heart

Rate this book
A New York Times best selling, multi-arc, character-driven story with great battles and strong-willed females that will appeal to males and females alike.

In a world where monsters called Yoma prey on humans and live among them in disguise, humanity's only hope is a new breed of warrior known as Claymores. Half human, half monster, these silver-eyed slayers possess supernatural strength but are condemned to fight their savage impulses or lose their humanity completely.

Priscilla relentlessly pursues Clare's destruction, while Deneve and Helen remain just as determined to protect her. But when the combined form of Luciela and Rafaela attacks, Clare and her cohorts are pulled into the twisting mass. Meanwhile, in Rabona, Miria heads east to destroy the Organization. She encounters Rubel and his secret mysterious warrior twins who may be Alicia and Beth's successors, as well as the Organization's number 10—a deadly fighter who can read Miria's mind.

After a strong volume 19 we get weakest one. New story arcs gets more convoluted and I don't don't like how it's shaping out.

I don't know why Miria chose to fight the organization alone, but alone she went. Perhaps one of the toughest episodes, that finishes with a "this cannot happen".

Second reading: this is more frustrating than I admitted it the first time around. Clare goes down without a fight, entering the yoma maelstrom. Miria goes ahead and fights the whole might of the Organization, meaning that she basically went ahead and killed herself - as the Organization created a warrior that can manipulate other warrior's senses. The perfect tool to kill Miria.

This is disarming. There's nobody left to fix anything, and the fight is lost forever. Still there are 8 more books. And I'm sad that they chose to kill Miria.

Anche se forse non risulta evidente come per altri mangaka, i disegni di Yagi sono migliorati rispetto ai primi numeri; non mi aspettavo un finale di volume così crudo 😢

More fighting, more abysmally strong creatures running about and destroying the world (will there be anything left at the end of the series, or just a bunch of people floating about in space, looking at the asteroids around them and thinking "Well, this could have gone better"?)

And in the midst of it all, a lone warrior runs off to fight against the organization which started it all. You can tell for sure that for her, this *could*, indeed, have gone better.

If Miria and Clare would quit trying to get their revenges by themselves things wouldn't be so jackedup right now!

4/5 Another quick volume that is once again nothing but an all out brawl. Priscilla gets serious and is just mopping the floor with everyone. Dauf makes another appearance and The Destroyer changes yet again.

The last couple of chapters are a little better. Miria leaves Robona to go and take on The Organization alone. Probably not the best idea.

An Awakened Priscilla on the cover of Volume 19.

We now have Yu-Gi-Oh monsters with boobs. I still love this series of course but that definitely made me laugh.

The ending really took me by surprise. I wasn't expecting to lose a character so near and dear to my heart. T^T

So a main character potentially dying was cool, and--if she did in fact die--she went out like a boss, but at the same time, she's supposed to be the intelligent one. Why do something dumb liking going it alone? Docking a star because of that, otherwise another great volume.

Claymore, Vol. 19 / 978-1421540788

I'm a very devoted fan of both the Claymore anime and the manga. I love the crisp black-and-white artwork, and while I realize it's not for everyone I personally think it's a perfect style for graphic novels. I find the action easy to follow, and the faces and body language to be surprisingly emotive. The story is complex and compelling, and I'm all in until the series finally finishes. I own this volume as a Nook Book e-book, and I assume it will shortly be ported to other online stores for sale.

Volume 19 provides the following scenes:

Scene 102: The Ashes of Lautrec, Part 7
Scene 103: The Ashes of Lautrec, Part 8
Scene 104: The Ashes of Lautrec, Part 9
Scene 105: The Ashes of Lautrec, Part 10
Scene 106: Phantoms in the Heart, Part 1
Scene 107: Phantoms in the Heart, Part 2

Spoilers ahead!

This volume opens with Dietrich saving Cynthia and Yuma by directing the Abyss Feeders to attack the parasitic yoma from The Destroyer. Meanwhile, Deneve and Helen flee Priscilla while carrying an unconscious Clare. Priscilla is hindered in her hunt by a parasite-controlled Dauf; Priscilla defeats Dauf and attacks The Destroyer for getting in her way. The "statue" portion of The Destroyer crumbles and appears defeated, but the form was merely holding in a massive black cloud of tortured bodies and emotional turmoil. Before Helen and Deneve can react, Clare is sucked into the black mass, along with Priscilla. Helen, Deneve, Yuma, Cynthia, and Dietrich are barely able to flee and head back to Rabona.

In Rabona, Miria draws her sword against Tabitha and leaves the city to take on the Organization alone. She intends to kill humans for the first time in her life: the humans running the Organization and ruining the lives of countless innocents in their lust for power and control. Miria strikes down every warrior called out to defend the headquarters, but she strikes without killing and only incapacitates the Claymores. Though this takes more effort on her part and is done at a greater risk, she is committed to protecting the innocent Claymore who have been lied to by the Organization.

Unfortunately, the Organization reveals a hidden trump card: the hidden Number 10 warrior, Rafutera, has been trained from childhood as an "anti-warrior warrior". She taps into the mental state of those who would attack the Organization and manages to cloud, confuse, and distract them. Miria becomes disoriented, and then dreams that she sees her deceased friend Hilda before her. While she smiles at her friend, Miria is cut down by the other Claymore.

"I wish everyone in my way... would disappear."

Not only does volume 19 directly continue a major arc started in volume 18 the series in general builds off all that has come before. This is not the place to start reading - go back to the beginning.

The end chapters of the massive The Ashes of Lautrec arc (parts 7-10) finish the Earth-shattering conflict between the greatest powers in the land. The ones left fighting are terrifying and near omnipotent, and a huge sacrifice will be required for anyone at all to survive. The all out action continues, more true natures are revealed this is a worthy end to this particular stage in the conflict and overarching story of the series.

The truly wonderful thing about Claymore is even with all the major developments, twists and closing threads in The Ashes of Lautrec and the preceding volumes it's still clear there is a TON left to the story and it's various mysteries and characters. Yagi wastes no time moving on to the next huge point of interest in Phantoms of the Heart (parts 1-2) by switching back to one of the few important established characters missing from the conflict in the West. Miria's assault on the Organization begins in a quickly escalating conflict that features some of the most heart wrenching moments in the series. I have no idea where it will go from here and I can't wait to find out.

A fantastic finish to the biggest story in the manga thus far and an equally strong start to our next tale.

Still fighting, still awesome.

World: The art in this one takes it up another level. That fight with Priscilla and the Druf is amazing! The world building is strong with new pieces and old pieces come colliding together. There is not a lot of depth but it's still good.

Story: The fighting is unending and normally I would be annoyed that after 3 books it's still going but it's so good. There are so many characters I care about and the framing and the pacing makes readers care about them. The fights are so epic and insane. Wow that end.

Characters: The characters are solid, we get time with the entire team and it's well done. Not super deep but still emotionally resonating to fans. The new characters are simple but visually stunning.

Still fighting!

Onward to the next book!

Today's post is on Claymore volume 19: Phantoms in the Heart by Norihiro Yagi. It is the nineteenth the long running Claymore series, you need to have read the first eighteen volumes to understand the story. It is 191 pages long and is published by Shonen Jump Advanced. The cover has Priscilla as she is transforming on it. The intended reader is someone who likes dark plots, high action, and strong female characters. There is mild foul language, no sexuality, and lots of violence in this book. The story is told from third person close of the main character. There Be Spoilers Ahead.

From the back of the book- Priscilla relentlessly pursues Clare's destruction, while Deneve and Helen remain just as determined to protect her. But when the combined form of Luciela and Rafaela attacks, Clare and her cohorts are pulled into the twisting mass. Meanwhile, in Ribona, Miria heads east to destroy the Organization. She encounters Rubel and his secret weapons: mysterious warrior twins who may be Alicia and Beth's successors, as well as the Organization's number 10—a deadly fighter who can read Miria's mind.

Review- Priscilla cannot place what about Clare that makes her want to kill Clare so badly but Priscilla is unstoppable. Helen and Deneve are doing everything they can to get Clare away from Priscilla but they are not strong enough to do little more than run juts ahead of her. Miria is in a very bad place and maybe dead because she saw her friend, the one that made her start questioning the Organization to begin with, because of Claymore number 10. It is not that number 10 can read minds but more that she can control others minds and make them react to what number 10 wants them to. Clare is about to get something either information or power from the fused form of Reafael and Luciela because they take Clare from Helen and Deneve but what is a mystery for the next volume. Only seven volumes left and I am very curious about how everything is going to end up with the characters and the world in general.

I give this volume a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.

Dietrich is such a clever cookie, love how she lured the abyss eaters to the awakened horde. They are perfect, cuz the parasite can't consume their sense of self, since they have non.

So if we go by Clare's track record of consuming Claymore's arms and heads and minds, she should come out of this whit more weird strength than before lol. Mess. I would rather see how she became stronger in the seven years honestly than random power-ups like this. She is weak. And I get why they did it. There is no way for her to defeat Priscilla in other ways, let's be honest. I don't know what I expected other than this. I guess I'm disappointed.

The first part of the volume was fine. Now they are shaping Priscilla to be the main villain, I suppose.

Miria!!! They did her dirty. I Didn’t like it. The problem is not that she died, but how she died. She is the intelligent one. The one who roamed the land for a long time and gained lots of knowledge. The one who can make a plan in the hardest situation. The writer has been developing her to be a strong and intelligent leader. And yet it didn’t occur to her mind that the organization have a stashed secret weapon, or that Hilda was an illusion, a trick made by the organization????
-1 star for that.

Disappointed and actually surprised ☹️
