Have you ever had shivers run down your spine for no apparent reason or felt like someone was watching you, even though you were alone? Whitney has. Weeks after her dad died in a drowning accident, sixteen year old Whitney Lane is afraid she might be going crazy, just like her mom. She saw shadows moving along walls, whisperings around corners and blurs of motion from the corner of her eye. But whenever she looked, there was never anything there. Until one day, there was.
Do you believe in Angels? What about the evils of the world? Whitney is about to come face to face with both.
From the start you see Whitney dealing with a grief like no other: losing a beloved parent to a tragic accident. We see as she has to pick up the pieces in the aftermath as her mother has checked out on the family. No kid should have to be an adult at 16. It is not fair. But Whitney does it and makes sure her remaining family is taken care of. She was an excellent character in my eyes. I just hate that she had to go through what she went through. But thankfully she gets to be the teenager she is supposed to be when a fellow classmate shows some interest.
GUARDIAN was a wonderful read that, although started out somewhat slow in the beginning, really took off in the 2nd half. I was held captive by the plot from the middle straight on to the end. There were definitely turns I didn’t see coming, characters that had my jaw dropping with their actions, and an ending that was beyond amazing.
It has been some time since I read about Angels and Demons, so to step into this one was a nice change of scenery. But Cole did a wonderful job writing this one, as I do believe this was her debut book. Being YA it is definitely different than the NA books of hers that I am used to reading. But I was still entertained with it none the less. 4 Stars!
Full review can be found at: http://oneguysguidetogoodreads.blogsp... *********************************************************************************** My Thoughts:
I was approached by Inkslinger PR about reviewing this read by Courtney Cole a month or so ago and was a little confused, I had definitely heard of this book before. Oh hey, guess what? It was already on my TBR. It was a win-win all around. This book was Courtney’s debut novel several years back and this is promo is to celebrate its rerelease now that it’s publishing contract has expired. Glad I was able to straighten that up!
I will say that although this book came to me highly recommended by several friends, I was still a little leery about starting it. I don’t know why, but I am thinking it may have been because since it was YA, I immediately assumed it would be a lower YA kind of thing. I love the angel/demon paranormal genre, but I really haven’t had much luck with it in the YA sector to be honest. Guardian definitely changed my views on that! I started this book last night and read the entire thing in one sitting. Seriously. I couldn’t put it down. Any of my regular readers will tell you that is quite a compliment, coming from me!
From page one we are drawn into this extremely emotional story that Cole has created that sets the tone from the start. After 2 paragraphs you realize this isn’t going to be your average YA. This isn’t a happy story. It may have a happy ending (eventually) but the journey from cover to cover is as heartbreaking as it is redeeming. Cole has a beautiful writing style that allows us to really feel the plight of Whitney and Ellie.
Whitney (our MC) is a strong willed 16 year old who is wise beyond her years. She faces demons (literally) in her everyday life (literally). Following the death of her father, Whitney’s life changes drastically when she is left to care for both her much younger sister and her grieving mother. While this book touches on the very important subject of grief and the importance of healthy grieving and learning to overcome that grief, I believe Cole also grants many other life lessons along the way. The forward speaks of Cole writing this novel after the passing of her own father, and I believe any father would be proud of this beautiful piece of literature Cole has crafted. I honestly don’t know why this sat in my TBR for so long. I absolutely loved every second of it.
This book did remind me of a few others I have read, but it really was unique in its own way. Unlike other YA’s the romance element wasn’t overbearing, nor did it leave a sour taste in your mouth. There were a couple of “jaw dropping” moments where I literally couldn’t believe that a character had acted the way that they had, but it eventually added to the huge plot twist ending that I did not see coming. Which again, is saying something, because I usually have the endings figured out quick? Not this time!
The paranormal element of this novel was SPOT on! This is the second “guardian angel” type book I have read just this week and I was pleasantly surprised by Guardian. There are angels, demons, and huge elaborate back-stories given to each, which really helped to set the mood and plant out storyline. I really enjoyed this novel, immensely. There wasn’t any “over the top” antics, and everything was completely believable, even throughout the deep paranormal undertones. I would like to note, that unlike other Angel/Demon paranormals I have read, this novel actually addressed the existence/story of God vs. Satan (Lucifer/Helele) and Heaven/Hell. I think that was a very nice touch. Oftentimes in these novels the authors have to “tone it down” or make it more “uniform” so as not to offend others of varying religions. I liked that Cole was able to freely write about the spirituality she has chosen and still found a way to make it enjoyable for any audience, religious or not. Although, it will definitely scare the fear of God in you in a few parts!
I really can’t say too much more without giving away specific plotlines, but I will just say that I seriously loved this book. It was a relatively easy read with great characters, an amazing storyline, and feels to boot. Cole has crafted a beautifully written paranormal novel with a great message for any readers. It doesn’t matter if you’re 15 or 65, I strongly believe this novel will speak to audiences across the board. All in all, I am giving Guardian by Courtney Cole a perfect 5 stars! I couldn’t have asked for any more. Generally I would even ask for a sequel here, not this time. Cole wrapped up this story PERFECTLY. I see that Cole has numerous other paranormal series out and after devouring Guardian, I will be adding them all to my TBR as well! This was all a really long way of saying two things, one READ THIS NOVEL!! And two, Happy Birthday Mrs. Courtney Cole! My wish for you is that your re-release of Guardian is all that you hoped it would be, you most definitely deserve it! ***********************************************************************************
"I know. I feel it, too. Whitney, am I crazy to say that I was meant to meet you? That it feels like all of this was meant to happen?" I shake my head. "I know it was. Everything that happened tonight was in my plan. And your plan. Our plans are connected. And tonight they collided." ~ Carter Kelley
Whitney Lane's life used to be normal. She was a regular girl turning 16, getting ready to get her driver's license and looking at cute boys with her best friend Delaney. That all changes the day her dad tries to help a drowning stranger and winds up drowning himself.
Obviously, Whitney's life changes drastically. Her mom totally goes off the deep end. She goes way beyond grieving. It's like she's losing her mind.
Whitney, frightened of being put in foster care and separated from her little sister Ellie, tells no one about their situation. I mean, everyone knows her dad died, but no one knows the crazy that's going on in the house. Whitney grows up fast and begins to take care of everything.
Whitney starts seeing shadows lurking around her. She hears strange noises and has completely uneasy feelings in her own home. In her own room. Whitney can't explain any of these things and she keeps it all to herself. Never asks anyone for help at all.
I'm sure you've realized by the title of the book and the cover that there's some sort of Guardian Angel involved in the story. His name is Samuel, he explains to Whitney he's her guardian, his job is to protect her as much as he can and guide her through her life's plan. When Samuel comes to Whitney, he comes in the human form of a beautiful teenage boy, which is a good idea since he's a seven foot tall angel with huge wings coming out of his back. He explains to Whitney that her life has a plan and something very big is brewing on the horizon. Imagine losing your dad, your mom going looney and then running into your Guardian Angel who tells you big troubles coming. Scary right?
Throw into this mix two gorgeous in different ways boys and the story just gets trickier. Brady Parker with his California surfer good looks shows up on this scene and tells Whitney he's very into her. He's very sweet and helpful and he always has the right things to say to Whitney. He makes Whitney feel those feelings teenage girls feel about teenage boys. She's drawn to Parker and falls for him.
Dark and brooding Carter Kelley seems to loathe Whitney for no reason. They've never met but whenever they're near each other, his icy glares leave Whitney unnerved and wondering why this boy hates her so much. Carter's got his own story (read the book).
Guardian made me remember how much I love books about angels. It's one of the best angel books that I've ever read. Samuel is an incredible character. He's powerful and he guides Whitney through an incredibly difficult chapter in her life.
I'll tell you this story gets worse before it gets better. Mom goes totally takes the bus to crazy town and Whitney realizes she needs help and calls in her grandparents. Then Whitney, trying to figure out what's going on finds artifacts from an archeological dig her father was on in Israel. They turn the room icy cold and freak her out.
There's a plot twist, a powerful battle between angels and demons, and a young girl who's in the fight of her life to save her family.
I think Samuel said it best to Whitney when they met: Remember, nothing is what it seems to be. That statement can be applied to the entire book. Just when you think you know what it's all about, the plot changes and goes in another direction.
If you love books about Guardian Angels, this is a must read. I can't even explain how much this book affected me. Courtney Cole's story telling in Guardian is moving and definitely gives you something to think about.
I have to give Guardian a five lip smack review. It's a YA, paranormal read. Yes there's some teenage romance, but it's the plot of the story and Whitney that make the book so intense. *****ARC read in exchange for honest review*****
In the wake of enormous personal tragedy, sixteen year old Whitney Lane struggles to move on with her life. She finds herself juggling the responsibility of being a pseudo-mother to her six year old sister and trying to keep her mom’s rapidly declining mental health hidden from their small town’s rumormongers all while trying to navigate the turbulent waters of adolescence and boys. When she begins to hear strange noises and begins to see ghostly shapes flitting around the edges of her vision, Whitney questions her own sanity and wonders if she’s following her mother’s dark descent into depression, or if there’s something more to these unsettling occurrences. She starts to realize that there’s an unseen world beyond her tangible reality where the heavenly battle between good and evil rages, and that her own destiny is caught up in the middle of it.
I loved Whitney. She was deeply grieving the loss of her father, yet she saw that her family was in danger of falling apart and selflessly became the glue that held them all together. Responsible, protective, practical, mature, and optimistic despite her circumstances, Whitney was a character that I cared about and connected with instantly. Her relationship with her sister Ellie was probably one of my favorite aspects of the book. They were always so sweet with each other and each concerned about the other, and Whitney took great pains to shield her little sister from the harsh realities of their mother’s condition. My heart just broke for both these two girls who lost a little bit of their childhood innocence and were forced into a maturity beyond their years.
The story, the details of which I will not go into so that I don’t ruin anything for you, Dear Reader, was paced a little slowly; I found that it seemed to take longer than necessary to reach the conclusion and the lulls in the action dissipated the sense of danger and urgency the characters faced. However, despite the slowness, the mystery and romance Cole weaves throughout the story still kept my attention and was well done.
Which brings me to the romance. Ah, the romance. One of the things that makes Courtney Cole such a delight to read is that she never takes the story in the direction I expect. In regards to Whitney’s love life, I was surprised, then surprised again and ultimately utterly thrilled with the outcome of the love story.
In a market where YA bookshelves are saturated with angel and demon stories, Cole’s twist on the genre was a refreshing change from the “I’m a super hot, but stalker-ish guardian angel and even though you have no idea that I exist, I’ve fallen deeply, madly in love with you” OR the “Hey baby, I’m a sexy, bad boy fallen angel who is all kinds of divine trouble. Like motorcycles? What’s your sign?” stories we’ve been exposed to the last couple years. I mean, come on. I adore Patch Cipriano as much as the next girl, but you KNOW what I’m talking about, right? More often than not, angel stories end up in one of those two categories. With Guardian, Cole has truly created something unique and heartwarming – a story that’s all her own. Incredibly poignant and a bit more philosophical than her previous books, Cole explores the nature of grief, questions the purpose behind human tragedy, and inquires as to whether there’s such a thing as predestination, all while building her story to an exciting, dramatic conclusion.
Whitney’s father drowned trying to save a boy from the riptide. How was she going to recover? And would her mother ever get better?
Ms. Cole makes Whitney a strong young woman who takes of her little sister and her Mom while the family tries to adjust to their loss and the grief they feel. Whitney is angry. She wonders why her Dad had to die and hates the boy that caused his death. As the book goes on, she finally begins to understand why it had to happen that way.
This is a story of loss, grief, and a new love. The paranormal portion of the story is her guardian angel, who attempts to comfort and protect her as he can. He can’t make her choices, though. She must pick her own path and make her own plan. On the other side, the fallen want something from her and they are able to try to influence her. The more she learns about the otherworldly beings, the less she really knows.
This author writes a tale that is fantasy but has lots of good advice in it for dealing with life. Ms. Cole also comes up with a very unique twist for the ending that amazed me, but fit well with the story line. Her imagery she creates for the good and fallen angel fight made me read closely and pay attention. This would make a great movie.
The story moves along well, you care about Whitney and her family and you’ll be rooting for the good guys to win instead of the demons, but it’s a close fight. Why not read it yourself and see just how close it gets before it concludes? It’ll keep you turning pages.
This book wasn't for me. It's labeled as YA but it felt it was even for a younger. I agreed to review it due to the blurb, which sounded promising but when I reached the 70% mark and everything made no sense I lost my interest and gave up.
The writing didn't really captivate me - this includes the characters, dialogues, and attempt to create a mystical feeling. It felt stilted and dull. The book was missing the important LEADING PATH throughout the book to hold a readers attention because now it seems there's a lot of jumping back and forth. The lack of cohesiveness and slow build-up to the story, the important action -the peek of the book- was just not gonna happen. Maybe after the 70 percent there's some enlightening, action etc. going to happen but the author didn't do a successful job keeping my interest on the story or on the faith of the characters. ___________________________________ ✦ Read all my review (A-Z) on the blog ✦ Like the blog on Facebook
It is not often that I have the time to pick up a YA Paranormal book. Stories about mystical creatures especially angels and demons is one of my guilty pleasures. When I came across Guardian and realized that not only had Courtney Cole written a YA book but it was also a Paranormal, I jumped on the chance to read it. I could barely contain my excitement! Diving right it and setting off to begin a journey I longed for! Altough the story was slow to start, I devoured it in one sitting. I savored every single minute and was reminded just how much I love to read about a world where anything is possible. Where there are forces working beyond our understanding. Guardian was a pleasure to read. The twist and turns had me guessing throughout and I was completely enthralled. As always Courteny Cole weaves a spellbinding story that I never wanted to end! I look forward to see what Courtney has up her sleeve next.
This was a really great read! Excellent plot and characters and different from the normal paranormal romance! The author is so good at what she does...I love it when the reading is effortless and you're free to get involved in the mystery unfolding! I would rate it 4.5 stars...and I loved the underlying message of the existence of God and goodness and life after death...refreshing!
This is the first Young Adult Paranormal book I have read in ages, I haven't read any good ones for quite some time, so I haven't really been looking for any new ones lately. Then I was asked to read Guardian and straight away, I knew it was going to be good and exactly what I had been missing. Whitney, has had a rough time lately. Her father passed away, saving a boy from drowning. Weeks later she is still trying to come to terms with losing him whilst looking after her little sister, as her mum seems to be having a breakdown. She has retreated in to her own mind, and Whitney has the worry of her sister and herself being split up, and put in foster care if she asks for help. So she gets through every day the best way she can, surviving. Oh and she has only just turned 16! On top of all this, Whitney thinks she is going crazy. She is seeing things that she isn't sure are there, and feels certain things around her, even touching her. She isn't sure whether she is imaging them, although they seem so real. Yet with the stress she is under and how much her fathers death has effected her, she puts it down to her going mad. Just when everything was at it's worse, in walks Brady. He is gorgeous, perfect and is obviously totally hooked on Whitney. He actually seems a little too good to be true. She even starts dreaming about him, dreams that seem eerily real. It's at this time she also meets another new face, Carter. Dark and brooding swimmer Carter, who doesn't seem to take to Whitney all that well. Although they don't know each other, she still feels curious about what it is that bugs him. Whether she has done something wrong. So two new gorgeous faces around, yet the things that Whitney is seeing and feeling are getting worse. Far more frequent and feeling more real than ever. Also it would seem her mother is getting worse too. Her condition is getting far more scarier and Whitney needs help. She finally decides to call her grandparents, who get on the first plane to come stay with her. Without giving away all the big secrets and twists within this fantastic story, I can't say a great deal more. What I can say is, there was some fantastic twists and turns that left me shocked yet excited. Things that I didn't see coming. Which made this story quite unique. Sometimes, it can be hard to find something different within the paranormal genre, a lot of subjects get rehashed and re twisted and not always for the best. I was really impressed and surprised at where this story went. It was different and intriguing and I was hooked throughout the entire book. It was so good to get back into paranormal books again with something new and captivating. Whitney was a fantastic main character, although she was a lot younger than any mc's I have read about lately and I must admit, I did worry if I would be able to get into it again, after reading so many adult age books lately. Yet, I really had no worries. After everything that happened to her, she was far older than her 16 years. She had been forced to grow up and didn't seem like 16 at all. All the other supporting characters were equally as exciting and enjoyable. The writing was fantastic, I loved how addicted I felt to everything within this story right from the first few pages. I was captivated by the writing style and enjoyed the feeling of being glued to the pages again. A fantastic paranormal tale that will have you gripped from the start, and left questioning lots of things long after your finished. 4.5 stars!
**I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review**
I didn't know what to expect from this book, because the synopsis was vague as hell. But it sounded so good! Was it a horror book, a ghost story, or some other paranormal being that we won't know about until we read it? I had no clue! And I loved that. It made everything so surprising and twisty.
Rating: 4 Stars!
At the beginning of this novel, I wasn't sure I could read it. Not because it was bad or that I disliked the writing. It was so eerily similar to what my life was like four years ago, and still kind of is today. It made me put it aside for like a week, because I didn't feel emotionally ready for how this book started out. I almost didn't do it for this release day launch. But then I started reading it again during my "lunch break" at school and I was hooked.
I really loved the main character's voice and how she told the story. Whitney has just been through a terrible tragedy, but she's pushing away her grief to help her mother and baby sister. At times, she resents that, which is normal and makes total sense. But she also just has a huge heart and she can't stand not being able to do anything to heal her mother's broken heart. She's standing on her own, swirling in a world filled with grief and heartache, yet she still does whatever she can to ease her family's pain. That takes strength, and a lot of courage. I admired Whit for her caring nature and golden heart, all the while suffering by herself with no one to lean on. She struggles on a daily basis to be happy and live her life, and she has to balance that with a life that is quickly and rapidly changing. From a crush developing into something more to a mom that won't snap out of her grief to a revelation that rocks Whit's entire universe, she has to come to terms with everything that's happening. But Whit keeps her cool, her calmness, and she's very self-aware of herself and the people around her. This girl seriously doesn't have a flaw, and I found that to be a little bit ridiculous because no one is perfect. But she had great growth throughout the book.
The secondary characters were all wonderfully fleshed out! I loved Whit's relationship with her little sister, and even her mom. I ADORED Delaney, Whit's best friend. She was awesome, and their friendship was beautiful. For reasons I cannot say because they would spoil plot, I also loved the character who shows up and rocks Whit's world with the truth about everything. And there is a little bit of romance, but it's not the focus. I liked that because this was more about Whit healing from a tragedy that changed her life and learning that not everything is as it seems.
And boy is that statement the TRUTH. Because I was so blind from the synopsis (and obviously I missed the hot guy with wings on the cover--not even joking, I just realized this when I started writing the review), I was pleasantly surprised with the direction the story took. That story-line has been overdone and the "twist" near the end was very easy to figure out for me, but I thought this book made things unique. It was fairly simple and straightforward yet there is a lot the reader doesn't know. There is a lot Whitney doesn't know, and I loved watching her untangle the truths behind what she never knew was real.
Guardian was a young adult paranormal that started out reading like a contemporary but quickly changed into a story about good vs. evil, monsters in the dark vs. guardians of the light. And I loved it!
Courtney Cole is fucking phenomenal! Her way with words is so unique and captivating. She's an extremely talented writer and I am so happy to have been given the chance to review this book. There wasn’t one point in the book where I was bored or disappointed. Everything about this story was unique and so well translated. It’s definitely the best demon/angel topic I’ve ever read bout. Growing up in a Christian home I’ve heard so many stories about all the fallen angels, and my brother being the curious cat he is fell in love with the subject. So I grew up hearing about it. I loved reading the story and understanding it all, knowing the angels and who/what they are before it is explained. The amount of research and work she did to make sure this book is accurate definitely shows. Nothing about this book is lacking. Not from the writing or the characters, nothing!
I fell in love with her writing by the time I finished reading her dedication. My face was tear stained, then I read the first chapter and I felt like I was drowning in myself. Courtney Cole’s writing can only be described as supreme. It’s so descriptive, addicting and is definitely different from other authors! You might as well call this a movie because it didn’t feel like a book. Not to me, every chapter turned into a scene and it just continued to play the best movie I’ve ever seen.
- Brady: Is definitely one of the sweetest guys I’ve ever had the pleasure to read about. He had this way with words where he could seduce you into anything. The simplest things came out of his mouth, and just sounded so beautiful. “I hope I’m not being rude. I just can’t stop thinking about you.” He was a damn dream, blonde/brownish hair with piercing blue eyes and the built body of a football player. Yeah he’s definitely a dangerous combination ;)
- Whitney: Bless this book because people because we have a strong heroine from the beginning. Yep, she’s strong and she pretty much just gets stronger and stronger throughout the story. So there is definitely some character growth! I loved her character, after all the pain she has went through she still manages to stand up and be the adult. So fast, she takes on all the responsibility to let other grieve so she put her grieving aside. She’s extremely selfless! I really loved that she knew when to accept someone or herself needed help, and wouldn’t hesitate to ask for it.
I now feel the need to go out and buy all her books!! Through out the whole the book the saying “not everything is what is seems” is told to whitney. After finishing the book, I think it’s more towards us than it is for her. I loved the theme of everything happens for a reason because I truly do believe that. I suggest no one tries to figure this book out, just love it and enjoy it because that BIG BANG will come and you might just get smacked with it if you aren’t careful. So many great plot twist, and details. I adored the ending, and this whole book! It’s definitely a favorite of mine! I highly suggest everyone goes out and buys it! It’s so captivating, keeps you on edge, and makes you swoon beyond belief. Hope you all love it as much as I do!
I didn't read Guardian when it was first released but I'm glad I had to opportunity to read it upon it's re-release. It's my favourite Courtney Cole book I've read so far! I wasn't expecting this, but I think the reason I liked the story so much was the emotional involvement. Even from the very beginning of the story Whitney's pain and sense of loss is palpable and devastating.
After a tragic loss Whitney 'Whit' is left fighting for survival. This fight is not only for herself but for her entire family. Whit suddenly finds herself in this unexpected and terrible situation, where instead of normal teen issues, she's left looking after her little sister Ellie (so cute) and mother.
In Guardian, Cole covers the tricky issues of bereavement and mental health. She also looks at morality and the paranormal - it all fits together in an infinitely better and less confusing manner than how I've described it here. I won't go into too much detail because even though it's a re-release I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't read the book yet.
Whit is sweet, fierce and likeable. Well except for when it came to boys - she was a little immature here because she was fairly indecisive. BUT tbh I put that down to her grief and young age. I was expecting your typical angel love story, with an annoying drawn out love triangle, but thankfully Cole takes the story in a different direction.
I thought Whit was pretty good at holding it all together and even though I could feel her pain, she was a trooper. The supernatural elements were a clever way of addressing grief by looking at it in a different way.
I had my suspicions about certain characters, although I like how Cole kept us guessing. There were a few moments when I felt the timing was a little off. Sometimes events happened really quickly, then other times they went by really slowly. This is only a small thing and it did help to add to the sense of time passing and Whitney trying to move on. I actually remember being surprised at the extremely short time period that passes in Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series or when other YA stories suddenly jump forward months at a time. I often find this is the case with YA paranormal/fantasy stories because the perfect balance is very difficult to find.
I enjoyed Whit's story because it was sad, sweet and interesting. I liked the twist in angel lore and found the characters (both main and secondary) intriguing. I like my characters a bit on the more mysterious side so I had a clear favourite choice for who Whit should be with, but I'll leave you to discover what happens...
4 Stars in my Sky!
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review!
Do you believe that everything happens for a reason? There are no random coincidences? Do we all have a plan written just for us? Do Guardian Angels exist to make sure we fulfill whatever plans have been made for us? Whitney Lane is about to learn there is a lot more to life than what she believed.
Of course, because this book deals with angels, demons, possession, forgiveness, and fulfilling our destiny; if you aren’t a religious person, you have to read this book with a very open mind. Far too often I see reviews where people slam a book because they don’t like the content… so to save anyone the hassle of reading something that is outside your “comfort” zone… yes, this is a YA book; yes, it deals with angels, demons, and the belief that everyone has a destiny already laid out for them. There are some moments throughout the book where religion is made the focal point.
After saying all that… I really enjoyed this book. It’s much different from the NA Courtney Cole I am used to reading, but her style was still evident. The story started off a little slow for me, it wasn’t until about 30% when Samuel reveals himself to Whitney as her Guardian that things start to pick up; but once things got rolling I was truly invested! The characters are likeable, well, for the most part. Whitney is a strong, teenage female character. She’s gone through the horrible tragedy of losing a parent in a freak accident and her remaining parent sort of checks out of reality. No sixteen year old should have to be the adult of the house, but that’s exactly how it ends up. Because her mom checks out mentally, Whitney is left to care for her younger sister and hide the fact that her mom isn’t dealing with the situation at all. Whitney’s best friend, Delaney, is your typical high school girl… interested in boys and fashion… and boys. She provides some light-hearted banter and keeps the pace of the story flowing. Brady is the jock-god that every girl fawns over and wants to date and suddenly he’s taken an interest in Whitney. Truthfully, I never liked his character very much. He was always too perfect and that never bodes well. Carter was a mystery, I just couldn’t figure him out. But once his part in everything is revealed, everything made sense.
There’s a good message hidden in the story about forgiveness and I think it’s one that more people should hear. And even though religious beliefs do take center stage quite a bit, it never becomes “preachy” or over philosophical. If you enjoy good vs. evil, angels vs. demons then you will enjoy this book.
I received this book from InkSlinger PR as part of the release day launch tour.
How great would it be to actually know that you have a guardian angel that has watched over you since the day you were born? One who reveals themselves to you to let you know that they have been with you through the good times and the bad? One who tells you that your “close call” was actually thanks to his/her doing?
For sixteen year old Whitney Lane. This actually happens. Filled with grief and stress due to the sudden loss of her father, Whitney has to grow up pretty fast in order for her to take care of her younger sister and her mother. A mother who is so torn and grief stricken that she is basically useless. Staying holed up in her room, not bathing unless told by Whitney, and basically ceasing to be a mother.
But the “Powers that be” have decided to allow Whitney’s guardian angel reveal himself, and basically let her know that there is a grand plan that she is a part of, and that something very bad is on its way and she very much plays a role in it. This in itself is a huge relief as Whitney thought that she was following in the footsteps of her mother, and was slowly going crazy.
Add into this mixture a boy that all the girl in school lust over but is now totally into Whitney, and a new mysterious dark haired guy who seems to loathe Whitney’s existence, and you have a recipe for a great story!
My heart went out to Whitney and her little sister in the very first chapter of Guardian. It stirred emotions so early that the loss of their father made my heart ache somethin’ fierce! As a mother and wife, I can completely understand the pain that their mother is going through. I can sympathize with the mother about the pain of the loss of the love of your life, but you’ve got kids woman! Keep it together! I was getting angrier and angrier at her for neglecting her little ones. Fortunately, as the story progresses, all is not what it seems, and everything that Whitney believed to have been true is actually a mask, and something evil stirs.
I love the idea of guardian angels, and I love that the ones described in this story are angel warriors all muscley and hot. I much preferred that appearance over the teen mirage. The twist provided in the end was interesting and very Da Vinci code. I guess as an older reader, I was able to figure out this little plot twist earlier in the book, but for actual young reader’s, it would be real gasp worthy.
I’d recommend this read to fans of angel reads, and to those who enjoy reads involving good vs. evil.
I've been craving YA reads lately and Guardian was just wanted I needed. This book was a slow build but it didn't take long for it to grab my attention. It dealt with loss, grief, and this hidden world of angels and demons. It was easy for me to get caught up in the characters’ lives and it kept me turning the pages.
The book starts out with Whitney and her little sister Ellie preparing to say their final goodbye to their dad. Two months ago Whitney lost her father to a swimming accident. He was attempting to save someone but died in the process. Her whole family is consumed with grief and loss but her mother is having the most difficult time. She’s withdrawn from her girls and life all together and that leaves Whitney as both big sister and mother to Ellie. Whitney has try dealing with her own grief and hold her family together.
“There is this place, on the edge of despair and grief, where normal life intrudes. It’s a cross roads. It’s a place where you know you cannot stay, where you must go one way or the other. You can’t remain in limbo.”
As the story progresses, Whitney begins to have strange dreams. They feel beyond real to her. Some are harmless and others have her in utter fear. Strange things begin happen around her and she begins to feel like she’s being watched and she feels as if she’s losing it. Then there are moments where she feels utter comfort. She eventually meets Samuel. He’s her guardian angel and protector. He lets her know that there are dangers in this world and plans that are going unfold but he’s there to protect her.
“It’s not what it seems.”
From there things in Whitney’s world begin to change even more. She becomes closer to her classmate Brady and she also meets Carter Kelly. Carter seems to dislike her and she doesn't know why. Despite that, Whitney is finally feeling some normalcy in her life. When her mother begins to rapidly decline she doesn't know what to do but it’s only the beginning of a much bigger plan. There were secrets and good and evil that began to affect all parts of her life.
I felt Whitney’s grief but I also felt her strength. She was mature and handled things so well and still tried to find time to feel like a normal teenager. I really enjoyed this story and all the pieces slowly pieced themselves together. This was definitely a great YA read.
I received a review copy of this book for my stop on the blog tour at Donnie Darko Girl.
I think all of us as human beings wonder at some point why we're here, why we have to die, and what will happen to us after we die. Guardian is a story which explores possible answers to those questions. Reading this novel was emotional in a positive way and even comforting at times in terms of grief and life and death. I can't remember identifying with a character as much as I did Whitney with the way she grieved for her father.
At the beginning of Guardian, Whitney's dad died several weeks ago, leaving behind her and her mom and younger sister. Since his death, Whitney's mom has been wrapped in a deep depression, and Whitney becomes the glue holding everything together. She begins caring for her sister, cooking, paying the bills...all of the tasks adults are responsible for doing.
On top of taking on these heavy responsibilities, she's also heavily grieving and only sixteen years old. So it's completely understandable that when she starts having difficulty differentiating between dreams and reality and seeing things out of the corner of her eye, she thinks she's losing it. I would think that about myself as well!
Reading about Whitney's feelings of loss will probably always stay with me. I lost my mom to cancer right when I started high school, and while I didn't have to step in and take care of my little sister, I had the feeling I should and even wanted to. Not that I ever thought I could take our mom's place, but I knew my sister didn't get as many years with her as I did and wanted to care for her like a mom would.
I will say I'm glad I wasn't in Whitney's situation. There isn't anything more frightening to me than demons. Not even zombies. Wars between angels and demons fighting over human's souls - the stakes can't get much higher than life, death and the beyond. There were some tense moments where I had no idea what was going to happen. I went along for the ride and was not disappointed!
Guardian is the first book by Courtney Cole I've read, and I'm definitely a fan. This novel satisfied my craving for an angel/demon story and will stay with me long after the last page.
When I heard Courtney Cole was releasing a YA Paranormal Romance I immediately knew this was going to be a book I wanted to check out, especially after reading the synopsis. While I tend to lean towards paranormal books containing vampires and werewolves I found myself rather intrigued with this book's plot being centered around Angels, Demons and their fight over good versus evil.
Whitney is your average teenage girl, well as average as she can be since her father's untimely tragic death and her mother's withdrawal from reality. Now, in addition to being overcome with her own grief she's also desperately trying to fill her mother's abandoned shoes as she provides for and takes care of her much younger sister. Add to those already overwhelming emotions and responsibilities some very intense dreams and hair raising/chill bump inducing moments and you're left with a heroine who even though is longing for and grasping at some sense of normalcy feels as though she's loosing her mind.
I think what surprised me most as I read this book was my realization this story was more than just another teenage paranormal romance, where the heroine's life is completely changed as she finds herself in limbo between the "real" world and the paranormal element. In the end I believe Guardian was more about Whitney coming to terms with her father's death, about recognizing everyones life has a plan and oftentimes the reason's why things happen aren't revealed until the entire plan has unfolded, which unfortunately can be days, weeks, months or even years. Guardian supports the theory of "everything happens for a reason."
There is no doubt in my mind Courtney poured her heart and soul into every single piece of this story and I loved how nicely the story was wrapped up. Everything came full circle and all questions were answered. Yes it was paranormal, yes there was a romance and yes it's PG, but the point to this book I felt was bigger all of those things. While this story is different from many of Courtney's other books, its so well written, with fully developed characters (ones who never got on my nerves) and an intriguing storyline you won't be disappointed.
Firstly, a massive thank you to Courtney for sending me a review copy of Guardian!
To be honest, I've lost track of how many of Courtney's books I've actually read now, but each and everyone of them I thought were brilliant and Guardian is no exception to that!
Guardian follows sixteen year old Whitney as she struggles to keep her family together after her father's death. Her mother has been pretty out of it for a while now, but her mental health is rapidly deteriorating. Whitney is trying to keep her mother's problems a secret from friends by taking on all of her responsibilities when it comes to running the house and taking care of her six year old sister.
Whitney is also a normal teenage girl, she has relationship dramas and is trying to pass drivers ed and get her license as well as deal with her own grief over the loss of her father and when her guardian angel shows up things just go from weird to crazy for Whitney.
I loved this book so much, it was my first "angel" book and it has really made me want to read more books of the angel persuasion. Which is good since I have a few already in my to be read pile! I really liked the fact that the main plot did not surround angels or anything paranormal really. The real grit of the story is about a girl coming to terms with her fathers death. To me the paranormal stuff was a behind the scenes story really. Don't get me wrong I loved the paranormal parts to it, but for me it was a kind of added extra in the book.
As always Courtney has managed to write such an amazing twist in this book like she always does! I honestly did not see that one coming, but once I read it a lot of things started to make sense to me. I really loved seeing Whitney grow and the grief start to subside a bit as the book progressed.
The writing in this book is amazing, you can tell that Guardian was written from the heart and it touched a nerve in me. I'm not going to lie, I did have a few tears running down my face while reading this! Even though there is the angel element to this book, it is completely believable.
Overall Guardian is fantastic and I think one of Courtney' best books yet!
**I received a copy, as part of the release day launch, in exchange for an honest review
Initial Thoughts: I have always loved the paranormal genre and after reading this book I'm only reminded why! This book was so much fun to read and scary and creepy and fun again. I enjoyed it so much.
The Characters & Story: Whitney is a normal sixteen-year-old. Except that she is taking care of her little sister since their mom became unresponsive after their father drowned seven weeks prior. It's hard for their family because they all were so close that no one knows what to do and it's for Whitney to take on so much responsibility. But she's a strong person and her limits and what she could and couldn't do.
Now everything seems to be going as normal as it can be for Whitney considering, but then she starts to have nightmares that seem so real. Weird things happen in her "dreams" - scratching noises, temperature drops, and many other things that don't seem possible. She thinks that she might actually be going crazy but all that changes when nightmares and dreams become reality. Things just get even crazier from there!
Whitney and her relationship with her little sister was really sweet to see. They became really close after the accident with their father and it made them closer and more understanding and loving people. It helped that they were able to be there for each other.
Other characters are Brady, who I didn't like in the beginning. I just didn't trust him or have a good connection to his character and how he was part of the story. Carter I liked because I just wanted to know what part he played in everything and just wanted to know more about him as a character in general.
End Thoughts: Now I'm not going to spoil the rest of the story but I've always loved the paranormal theme of demons and angels, in this case guardian angels, especially if it is well done. Thought it was a bit slow in the beginning it picked up and I thought the book was well done, engaging, had some twists and turns, and it was just so much fun to read this book in the end. 4.5 stars.
Oh my God! I LOVED IT!!! Can I have some more? Please like Pretty Please?????
I will try to stop behaving like a teenage fan girl who just saw JT or something..
Guardian is one of the best paranormal YA Romance books I have ever read!!
What I really loved about it is that we don’t focus on the romantic side of Whitney’s life or on the paranormal either. We focus on Whitney, on her life, on her character. It’s really hard not to let yourself go and turn the book into one of those paranormal books that only focus on that side. Or to to turn it into a teenager-in-love-with-2-guys-and-I-don’t-know-who-to-pick novel. I really admired Courtney Cole for that.
Guardian is a perfect example of 3 genres working together in a harmonic way. There’s not too much romance , too much paranormal or too many YA matters. It’s a beautiful blend.
Guardian is about Whitney Lane. Whitney is a 16 year old who just experienced loss and grief, as well as the responsibilities of a mother. She takes care of everything, the house, her family and herself when she remembers to. She experiences so many emotions in such short time and Courtney displays those emotions excellently! While reading the book, I felt like I was Whitney and I was feeling everything she felt. After her family’s tragedy, Whitney’s life became all the more intense and the book mirrored that.
It is a very intense book, because Whitney’s life was intense. It’s emotional and intriguing and oh my, the suspense…
I do not want to give any spoilers, because the story takes so many turns that you don’t want to miss them. It’s a book full of mysteries worth discovering..
But, I have to say that I really love Delaney and Carter. And Samuel was the most amusing of all, I might add.
Guardian is a FANTASTIC ABSOLUTELY BREATHTAKING (literally) OUTSTANDING NOVEL!! I cannot recommend it enough!!!
In fact, once I finished it, I wanted to read more..I’m not kidding; I will be stalking Courtney Cole for a sequel!!!
Guardian is a refreshing YA Paranormal Romance that I was lucky enough to have the chance to review! It tells the story of Whitney and her family, all of whom are struggling to get life back on track after the death of Whitney's father. Whitney is a strong character despite her recent loss, balancing the care of her family with her own sense of loss. If you haven't read the background on this story (see the link above in the intro) you should definitely check it out. Courtney wrote this book after her own father died, and the emotion she poured in to the story is almost palpable. While her own loss is tragic, Courtney's ability to verbalize her feelings and weave them in to Whitney's story adds a completely different dimension to the character. Guardian tells a tale about how all things are connected, and the bigger plan we cannot see. It is a touching story of a girl finding her place in that plan, and learning to put trust in things that are not tangible.
Courtney Cole has created characters that people will be able to relate to easily. We have all felt loss at some point, so we can understand where the characters we coming from. And let's not forget the romance part of the book either. Whitney is being pursued by the dreamboat guy that we all swooned over in high school. Perfect to the tee - caring, considerate, understanding. Don't worry though, there is the broody boy with the irresistible draw too. We have to put our trust in the author that there is a greater plan for these boys, just as Whitney must put her trust in her Guardian that there is a greater plan for her.
Paranormal fans will enjoy this original, heartfelt tale. The sweet romance aspects of the book balance out the heavier topics of loss and recovery. Although this is a re-release of an old work, readers will be pleased with this new discovery. Sure to be a hit with readers of all varieties, I definitely recommend this one to shake things up!
What do you do when the world that you know becomes one right out of your nightmares? Whitney Lane's life has changed dramatically in the last few months. A freak accident has taken her father away, leaving Whitney and her family devastated. Her mother is too lost in her own sadness to care for Whitney and Whitney's younger sister Ellie, leaving Whitney to shoulder the burden of moving forward and keeping everything together. With the steady and loving life she's always known unraveling before her eyes, Whitney hardly knows how to react when strange events begin occurring, events that she's only ever seen in those really scary movies she's watched. And when she's forced to confront an evil darker than she could ever have imagined, who will be at her side? Will it be Brady, the golden boy that seems to be her pillar of strength? Or Carter, the mysterious boy with the bad attitude and dark good looks? Sometimes it's the people that we least expect that give us just what we need.
I have read and loved Courtney Cole's New Adult novels, and was so excited to see that she had also written a YA title. 'Guardian' grabbed me from the get-go, and held me captive through all the crazy twists and turns and unexpected plot twists. I had no idea what to expect, but can absolutely say that Courtney has delivered a page-turner that I would recommend to any fan of a paranormal storyline coupled with well-written characters and a plot destined to grab you and keep you reading until the very last page. I really hope that Courtney has more YA magic up her sleeve, and look forward to reading more in this genre.
I love Courtney Cole's Beautifully Broken series, I wanted to read this when I had the opportunity. Guardian is a re-release of Ms. Cole's debut novel and it's a YA paranormal tale of angels and demons.
Guardian does a good job of setting up a seemingly "normal" sort of world from the start. 16 year old Whitney is trying to keep her family together. It's only been 7 weeks since her father drowned, her mother is grief stricken to the point of being bed-ridden, and her 6 year old sister is having nightmares. Some heavy, real-life stuff going on here.
There's also a few bright spots-- a boy named Brady, the cutest guy in school who's taken a sudden interest in her. A romantic interest. And then there's Delaney, Whitney's best friend, But Whitney's mom gets worse and so does Whitney. She's seeing things and feeling things that she has no explanation for, and then things get really strange when she meets her guardian angel and learns not all is what it seems.
The reveal of the paranormal elements of the story is nicely paced, building gradually to an exciting conclusion. There were a few twists and turns, some that surprised me, and some that weren't so surprising but still fun.
So overall, I liked Guardian. It was a quick read that held my interest and had me guessing a few times. It's very well suited for the YA age group.
3.5 Dealing with grief is always difficult. Our main character is Whitney and the reader is immediately faced with her initial coping with the death of her father. As a young character, you can almost feel the pain that she is feeling, as she speaks about her surrounding and those that are in it. Those whom are dealing with the great lost as well. She immediately, realizes that she must get into mind frame to push forward, not only for herself, but for others around her. Guardian has a very unique story line. The title itself provides a little foreshadowing. I’m very selective of books that I read that are centered around good vs. evil, especially as it relates to Angels. Ms. Cole truly crafts a novel that takes all of those elements and creates a world for Whitney, that she herself is uncertain of. Things happen that just can’t be explained. Things that aren’t your everyday occurrences. And it’s up to Whitney to figure things out. At first glance, the current cover truly caught my attention. You have to look very close for other clues of the storyline in the shadows of the cover. Although, I thought the book started off really well, however after a few chapters it slowed down a bit. Ms. Cole, quickly picks the pace back up leaving the reader just enough puzzle pieces sprinkled throughout to assist with making the necessary connections for the strange happenings in Whitney’s life.
The Guardian is not a romance. It is a YA paranormal story that is well written. Even though it is young adult, an adult that is looking for a quick read would like it. The main character, Whitney, is mature for a 16 year old. I mean, she has her moments, but honestly, she is not typical. She faces many obstacles that most would never imagine. Between a major loss in her family, and trying to navigate the waters of being a teen, she handles it with grace that can only be described as admirable.
Like I stated, it is YA. While I was reading it, my 12 year old stole my Kindle. Took me a while, but I finally got it back. She got a sample of the book, and now she is in love. She can’t wait to read it. It is fitting for older children, tweens or teens. Let your daughter read it, if you have one, and the two of you will have a great time discussing it.
Angels, Fallen Angels, and demons, oh my. The whole plot takes place in a very short period of time, so it is quick paced. Never does The Guardian lag. You don’t know what is happening around every corner, so it keeps you guessing.
If you are looking for a different side of Courtney Cole, this is it. It is completely different than her other works, but if you read the preface, it explains why. Ultimately, a quick, well written, faced paced read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Whitney Lane suffers from the tragic loss of her father. She is thrown into the role of taking care of her "checked out" mother and little sister. In the process of picking up the pieces of her family and helping them to move on, Whitney comes face to face with the whole other world of good vs. evil and she is smack dab in the middle of it all. What will happen to Whitney?
I'm sorry I have to be so vague on my review, but I do NOT want to give any of it away. What I will say is Courtney Cole is one of my all time favorite authors. I believe I have every single one of her books and have madly loved each one I've read so far! I absolutely loved the characters in this book, especially the heart and the strength of Whitney. I can honestly say that once again Courtney Cole has written a story that has your emotions all over the map and gasping out loud! And the ending will truly blow your mind. Please go and one click this book! I am so happy I got to read this book and even happier to give it a Nerd Alert B+ or 4.5 stars!

This was my first book that I have read by Cortney Cole and if I’m being honest here, I was disappointed with the book. I was actually pretty interested in this book but once I started reading it, I was very disappointed. · My first problem with the book is the characters. Whitney, Brady, and Carter. They each a certain thing that just got on my nerves. Whitney and Brady, I just couldn’t get in their character. And Carter, well he was just an asshole. I’m not going to say too much but he had no right to always be glaring at Whitney. It should have been her that hated his guts. · The second problem I had with the book was the book itself. Nothing happened for like 70% of the book. It was just boring. And when something actually did happen it wasn’t much. So, I was pretty bored though out the book. I absolutely hate when I don’t like a book but I guess it’s bound to happen.
Yes, I love Books about fallen Angels/Guardian Angels but this book wasn't one of them. One of the main things that I did like about the book was that Whitney had a best friend. She was a true best friend and was always there for her.
Guardian was nothing like what I had expected. Surprisingly book description very much fits the story, but prior to reading the description would have been viewed in a very different context. The main character is a young girl name Whitney. She is a very strong and admirable young girl. I was impressed by her character's dedication and drive; especially when it comes to her family. In the wake of losing her father, in tragic rescue attempt, she doesn't miss a beat; just picks up and carries the family through. Although, with her mother increasingly strange behaviors and the strange things that begin happening around her; Whitney soon discovers that there is far more to worry about than overcoming their horrible loss. As Whitney learns more and more about the things that go bump in the night it becomes clear that she is the target, and they will stop at nothing to have her. As her plan continues to unfold she will find safety in an unlikely place, proving that God's plan for her is nothing like what she had planned.
I would describe this book as light, relaxing, quick and enjoyable. I enjoyed this book, it wasn't light in the fact that the main character, Whitney and her family have lost their father in a tragic accident. It was light in there was no heavy relationship drama or heavy topics to deal with (i.e. rape, cutting, etc.). It describes your typical, sheltered teenager who wants to feel normal. She falls for the star jock at the high school who has "suddenly" taken an interest in me. The story progress where you quickly realize things are not as they seem.
A whole entire world exist unbeknownst to Whitney and she is about to come face to face with it! There are twists and turns at yes around 70% you will be asking yourself what the heck is going on?! Have no fear, all questions are quickly answered and all the twists and turns finally make sense but you are sitting there wondering how how Whitney is going to pull this off. In the end, which was a refreshing surprise, kinda leaves open the possibility that there could be a second book...cross your fingers!
