When quilter Jillian Hart returns to her lake house in Mercy, South Carolina, she discovered her friend, Tom, is missing-and his estranged half-brother has moved into Tom's house. Jillian doesn't trust the guy, especially since he allowed Tom's diabetic cat to escape. When police officers find Tom's wrecked car with a dead stranger inside, Jillian is determined to find out what happened to Tom-before someone else turns up dead.
Leann Sweeney was born and raised in Niagara Falls and educated at St. Joseph's Hospital and Lemoyne College in Syracuse, NY. She also has a degree from the University of Houston in behavioral science and worked for many years in psychiatry. Her short fiction won many awards and several mysteries were published in small market mystery magazines. Leann has written 13 cozy mysteries: 5 in The Yellow Rose Mystery Series and 8 in the Cats in Trouble Mysteries. #9 is being written now that Leann is recovering from a three year illness after a fall. Both series are published by Berkley and several titles made the NY Times bestseller list.
I cannot understand the glowing reviews for this book. It IS, indeed, just my kind of book---a cozy with cats and a dog and sympathetic characters---and I was greatly looking forward to it. But the plot is so implausible that I had a hard time finishing it. I lost count of the number of times I said to myself,"Nobody would do that." Disbelief can only be suspended so far. A lot of people enjoy this kind of book, as I do, but many readers apparently do not use any critical sense at all when they go for an entertaining read; their standards are too low. At $7.99 I feel I paid too much.
Coming home from a tour selling her cat quilts, Jillian becmes alarmed when she hasn't heard from her friend Tom, but when she goes to Tom's house, she encounters his estranged half-brother, Bob, who has broken into Tom's house, arousing fears in Jillian in The Cat, the Wife, and the Weapon by Leann Sweeney. Causing further drama, Jillian learns that Bob has let Tom's diabetic cat get loose, and Jillian finds him comatose with dangerously low blood sugar. After returning home from the vet, where Dashiell gets proper treatment, Jillian finds Tom in her house, where he retreated to take a shower, and she is alarmed to see his face badly beaten up.

The Cat, the Wife and the Weapon is the fourth in Leann Sweeney's Cat's in Trouble series. These cozy mysteries continue to charm me. I love all the characters, human and furry! This time around we get to learn more about Tom's past, one that he's been hesitant to share until now.
Jillian has just returned home from a week long arts and crafts show when she discovers her friend Tom missing. He's not answering his phone, his car is gone and there's a stranger claiming to be his brother staying in his house! Jillian doesn't trust the guy, especially since he allowed Tom's diabetic cat to escape. It's not long before Tom shows up on Jillian's doorstep looking like he came out second best in a fight. Just as he's trying to explain what happened to him, Mercy PD finds Tom's car wrecked and with a dead passenger inside. Who is this stranger, why was he in Tom's car and who killed him? Jillian must find out what kind of trouble Tom's gotten himself into and get to the bottom of it quickly.
Turns out it's quite a tangled mess Tom has, one that will take some sleuthing to unravel. The story is fast paced and the reveals keep coming. The mystery was more complex than in previous installments. Sweeney used enough misdirection that I guessed wrong on who the killer was. The new characters introduced are interesting. Tom's family is a group of unpleasant individuals, his stepson excluded. I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of his stepson in the future. There is also a bit more romance in this one as . It was another satisfying read.
Jillian, Tom and Candice are back with their many cats for another cozy murder mystery. In this episode Tom's brother has moved into his home (uninvited), his stepson has shown up covered in blood and his ex-wife is up to something. It's up to Jillian to solve the mystery and save the day...and with her daughter-in-law being the editor of the local newspaper perhaps she can even keep the high crime rate in Mercy from getting any unwanted attention.
The Cats in Trouble mysteries aren't all that surprising. They are written to a formula and all of the books with the exception of #5, The Cat, the Mill and the Murder follow the same basic pattern. It's not a criticism, I enjoy these books a lot...but they aren't the sort of books you can read one after another.
Quilter Jillian Hart couldn’t wait to get home after spending a week at craft fairs and cat shows across several Southern states. She hasn’t heard from her friend Tom Stewart and she is more than a little concerned. It isn’t like him not to answer her phone calls. So, when she returns to Mercy, South Carolina, she takes her three kitties home and goes to Tom’s house. He’s not there, but his brother is. A brother she never knew about. Jillian immediately distrusts Tom’s brother, especially when she discovers he allowed Tom’s diabetic cat to escape and go missing.
To Jillian’s horror, the police find Tom’s car wrecked with a dead body inside. When Tom shows up with bruises, Jillian fears for his life. To add to the confusion, Tom’s stepson arrives in town with a concussion, a memory loss and a dog named Yoshi. Jillian is more determined than ever to find out what’s going on, although she can’t help but wonder why Tom never mentioned his brother or his stepson. She fears these secrets might have led to murder.
This is the 4th book in Leann Sweeney’s “A Cats in Trouble Mystery Series” and each book that I’ve read has been wonderful. I read the first two books. I haven’t read the third book yet but I have it on my Nook.
It’s a fast-paced book, with lively dialogue and a cast of very likeable and charming characters. Jillian and her three fur babies – Merlot, Syrah, and Chablis – are delightful. Not only do the human characters come alive in this book, so do the furry characters. I enjoyed getting reacquainted with all the citizens of Mercy and meeting new ones too. We even get a nice romance tossed in the mix between Jillian and Tom.
This is a “must read” series for any cozy mystery fan, especially for a cat lover like me.
FTC Disclosure: The publisher provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.
Mercy is a town when everyone knows everyone’s business. How is that Jillian didn’t know her friend Tom had a brother?
Jillian returns home after attending craft fairs and cat shows selling her beautiful kitty quilts to find Tom missing and a man claiming to be Tom’s brother looking mighty comfortable in Tom’s house. She also finds Tom’s diabetic cat has gotten out of the house and this stranger has made no effort at all to look for him.
Then Tom’s car is found wrecked with a dead man, thankfully not Tom, inside. Where the heck is Tom and what is going on in Mercy?
Jillian with the help of her feline friends is going to find out and find out fast before someone else ends up dead!
Dollycas’s Thoughts Each story is better than the last. This is definitely the best of the series so far!!
We get to delve into Tom’s past and it is jam packed with secrets that keep us on our paws until the very last page. I don’t want to give too much away but I will say there are several surprises. Lydia still thinks Jillian is standing in the way of her and Tom living happily ever after. Merlot, Syrah and Chablis meet a new friend and there are some new characters that you have to read to believe. There are parts will have you laughing out loud, parts that will have you shaking in your shoes, and parts that may make you shed a tear or two. Sweeney has written a complex mystery and the dialogue between the characters was some of the best I have ever read.
Leann also always includes some cat facts and trivia woven into her stories and this time she enlightens us on feline diabetes and that plastic bowls can be toxic to our furry friends. I changed my pets water bowls the minute I read about it in the book.
I am not going to pussyfoot around, this book is fabulous, I loved it and you will too!
"The Cat, the Wife and the Weapon" is a cozy mystery. This book is the fourth in the series, but you don't need to read the previous books to understand this one, and this book didn't spoil the mysteries in the previous books.
The heroine was a sensible lady, at least when it came to dealing with a crisis. She was directly involved in the events, so she didn't have to poke about to find clues--the clues were happening all around her. Whodunit wasn't difficult to figure out, though it took a little longer to figure out why.
The characters were either super-nice people who all wanted to cooperate to solve the mystery, or they were mean, scary, or obnoxious "bad guys." It was fairly easy to determine who would play what role in the story. And the eighteen-year-old boy acted like a twelve-year-old who came from a loving, sheltered family, not a runaway from a abusive, neglectful family. So the characters were fun, but not very realistic.
The cats and dog were also main characters, and their every action was mentioned, even if it was just to go lie in the sun. They acted like idealized versions of cats and dogs (or Jullian interpreted their actions that way).
The author frequently cut short potentially suspenseful scenes which meant that the novel lacked suspense. The story wasn't always predictable (in the sense that the scenes could have had this, that, or the other happen, but didn't), but it was never surprising.
There was no sex. There was a minor amount of explicit bad language and a minor amount of fake bad language. While the novel wasn't bad, it also didn't leave me sorry to see it finish. If you like mysteries involving lovable cats and dogs, then you'd probably enjoy this one.
I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.
Jillian Hart returns from a long traveling craft show, where she sells her cat/pet quilts, and just 'knows' something is wrong with her boyfriend, Tom.
Never dismiss a woman's instinct as Jillian is proven quite correct. Not only is Tom in trouble but persons in Tom's past come out and cause pain, mayhem and murder in his current life and Jillian's. There is a new character, Finn and his dog, Yoshi that just makes you want to protect and nurture.
This was a complex murder mystery. Very gentle in it's approach as is the style of Jillian. There were laugh scenes and sad scenes. There was even some scary scenes.
All in all this was a good solid cozy murder mystery and I enjoyed the interaction of Merlot and Yoshi a great deal. Not to mention, Tom and Jillian's relationship.
This cozy mystery did not connect with me. I didn't like the writing style; it seemed careless and would have benefited from another developmental edit. The backstory was not believable. Bits seemed thrown in as needed to make a plot point, rather than adding to the whole storyline.
I've read cozies for many years and know that some are "fluffier" than others. This is one of the fluffy, with no real mystery, no deep characterizations, no getting the reader involved in the created world.
It was good for reading before bedtime, to help me fall asleep, but I wouldn't recommend it as a good example of a cozy mystery, or a good example of much at all. Won't read any more from this author. I got this at a thrift store for $1 and am glad I didn't pay more.
Jillian is a quilter with some cats. She also has a friend who has done a disappearing act. Can Jillian find her friend, or will she find heartache for her troubles?
I liked this book and it was a really quick read. I found something lacking in it though. It wasn't fantastic and it really didn't have exactly the same feel of a good cozy mystery. I really cannot describe it better, but I didn't really develop any feelings for the characters. They just never seemed to come off the page for me instead of just words on a page. This was sad, because I think that this series could be really good.
This latest installment in this intriguing series is the best one yet. In this tale, we get to know Tom better as his mysterious past comes to light. His half brother, ex-wife, ex-partner from his days as a cop, and his stepson all show up in Mercy, along with a menacing stranger. It takes a heap of patience and understanding on Jillian’s part to help Tom come to terms with his tangled relationships, especially as the dead bodies start turning up and people go missing. The continuing characters add much to the charm of this series, but the intricate plot lines are the backbone. Even if you are not a cat lover, you are bound to enjoy these cozies.
If you love cats, or if you enjoy a good mystery, this series is for you. My husband suggested I try this author when he saw some of her books posted on the internet. I was quickly hooked. I read all the Jillian Hart cat series in the order of their release, ending up with this book, her latest release. I must say I enjoyed them all, but in my opinion the books seemed to get better as they went along. The Cat, The Wife And The Weapon is now my favorite until they next Cats in Trouble mystery is released. I, for one, can't wait.
I always love the books in this series, which is extra cozzzzzy! All the talk about the cats, and now a dog named Yoshi (how cute!), made this another enjoyable read. I really like how Tom and Jillian's world keeps expanding and changing, keeping the story lines from ever becoming stale. I'm looking forward to the next!
Once again Leann Sweeney gives me a book I can't put down until the final page is turned. I love the character's in this series, and long for the day she walks them down the wedding aisle.
Love cat story books, being a cat owner, or slave to one! Brought several of these "fluff" books as they are a quick and easy read. Which means, I also love other type of books, but some take me forever to read, as I start to check facts etc. Fluff books, quick easy reads and I don't check anything!
Story: Jillian is a widow, who now has a boyfriend named Tom. A step-daughter who is now a good friend as well, and a BFF who is a cop. Jillian has three cats, and is also a quilter, and makes cat quilts, she comes back from a craft fair wondering why she has not heard from Tom. She finds a brother, she never heard of living at his home, and that Tom's cat, who is diabetic is lost. Jillian finds cat, gets it well, but where is Tom?
Tom's car is found with a dead man in it, then a teenager who has concussion turns up, and it is Tom's step-son! Jillian knows of no step-son, no ex-wife and no brothers. With high jinks from cats and help from her friends, Jillian is on the trail of finding Tom. There is also another murder and a wicked step-mother, makes it an interesting story.
I usually enjoy this series, but this book was a big disappointment. I first tried reading it up two years ago right after I bought it, but I found Jillian so annoying in the first few chapters. She was such a Nervous Nelly, being so anxious for nothing. She really needed a "chill pill". So I stopped reading it and recently picked it up again. I found Jillian still annoying. Then all these people who were related to her boyfriend, Tom, started showing up in town and making trouble. It was baffling why--if they supposedly have a close relationship--he never told her about them. It seems to me that the author realized she couldn't keep killing off too many more people in the very small town, so she had to bring victims in from outside. I wish that the author had a list of characters in the beginning of the book to help the readers keep tracking of them all. (Susan Boyer in her Low Country mysteries does this and I appreciate that she does.)
Another great book in the cats in trouble series! I’m really starting to love the series… Not that I didn’t like it before but the more books I read the more attached I get to the characters and the more I like the author and her writing style. It’s very well done and well written. In this particular novel, we get to meet more characters should more than likely will continue to appear throughout the series. I like the way she slowly is adding characters as we go rather than having us jump into a pool full of them in the beginning. Besides it’s really cool to watch how they become part of the established characters lives. I really liked Fin a lot and I’m looking forward to seeing more of him. I have to admit that I kind of saw what was coming down the pike as far as who the murderer was. But that’s OK because getting there was fun.
Jillian Hart thinks she knows her beau/friend Tom Stewart pretty well. But in the course of a single day, she finds he has a brother, Bob, who is apparently squatting at Tom's house in Tom's absence; an ex-wife, Hilary, in North Carolina; and an 18-year-old stepson, Finn, who has run away from home with his dog. Yoshi. (Tom has not mentioned any of these people to Jillian before.)
When Finn's mother's husband (who is also an ex-con that Tom put in prison when he was still on the police force) is found murdered in Tom's car, and Finn is found wandering on the side of the road, with a concussion he doesn't remember getting, blood on his clothes, and a gun in his backpack, things in Mercy, South Carolina, start getting complicated ...
I feel bad dnfing this series, since I usually don't care too much about the quality of my cozy mysteries. I'm not terribly picky. But, I just can't continue this series. I spend more and more time rolling my eyes at everyone's behavior.
Nothing wrong with the plotting in general. They are usually fairly solid mysteries. I just don't like half the characters, and I'm not a huge fan of our main character which is kind of an issue since I'm on book 4 and still am not entirely fond of her.
Overall, just meh. I love kitty cats and I like nice cozy mysteries, but this took the kitty love to maybe an extreme that was a bit excessive. There's other cat filled cozy mysteries that are silly and fun without being ridiculous.
It took me far too long to finish this book. I found there were too many characters and it took too long to get to the end where "the wife did it" as indicated by the title. However, this series still charms me as I work in the policing field, I love to quilt and own a diabetic cat, plus others. Tom's brother, Bob is an asshole & reading about him letting the diabetic cat get loose not once but twice & not giving one iota about the cats health made me so angry. I wished the author had written this part differently where Bob gets what he deserves. I do hope the author keeps Finn & his dog, Yoshi in the books to come.

Another wonderful feline mystery. I love how the cats are woven so well into the story, Jillian's feline friends really are a special clue and I feel lucky to follow in their adventures. Loved how this one centered around Tom, a favorite character of mine, and a little bit more about his past. Which we have not been privy to before. Great little book and once again I'm eager to start the next mystery.
I think this book was amazing. much better than book 2 for sure! The only downside is i pegged right away who the murderer was. other than that i felt like the characters were so real in this book, but it might just be because it's book 4 and i know everyone now. Time to see what Jillian gets upto in the next book. Onwards and upwards :)
Jillian’s kindness is put to the test when dealing with Tom’s ex-wife, a brother she’d never known he had, and the troubled teen who had been his stepson. When two men connected to the boy are found murdered, she puzzles over who could have been responsible, while trying to help those she cares about.
Another great book by Leann Sweeney. I love this series.
Jillian helped solve another murder. Can you imagine going through life not knowing the woman you thought was your mom was actually NOT?! Finn is Tom's stepson but was the only person who ever cared about him.
This series is always engaging and I love the personalities of Jillian's cats and how they help with solving murders

This was one of my favorites from the cat quilter series, because we find out a lot more about Tom who has been reluctant to open up much about his past. This is a good thing because it makes him a more interesting character and Jillian is beginning to fall for him.
Jillian's beau, Tom, evidently had a wife and stepson that he never mentioned. Finn left his very troubled home to come to Tom, but murder and danger come with him. This fourth book in the series is another satisfying mystery with familiar characters and cats.
