More Than Anything in the World, Volume 1, 1942-1943

Rate this book
More Than Anything in the World is a collection of WWII letters written by a U.S. Army soldier and his wife between 1942 and 1945. Included are scans of WWII memorabilia and historical information about the 1940s and World War II. The letters start out as love letters from a soldier to his new, young wife; and progress to his deployment to Europe (England, France, Belgium, Germany) into tales from the second world war. The story is best told in its original format, the letters themselves, written by the couple. Editorial information provided by their daughter, Kathleen S. Mueller, who discovered the letters in a box in 2010.

In a time before cell phones, email and electronic communications, their story details the hardships and sacrifices made by "The Greatest Generation". Those sacrifices made Americans' lives what they are today, with our freedoms, possibilities and gadgetry. We take for granted the ease of making a simple phone call by cellular phone, when people like them had to place the call with an operator and then wait hours and hours for the connection. When a telegram was faster than a handwritten letter -- but not much faster. When people didn't hear from each other for days or months, and couldn't just connect on a moment's notice. They are our heroes, and we are forever grateful to them for their sacrifices.

More Than Anything in the World may be the largest collection of World War II letters in existence today. The nearly 1,000 letters in this series comprise three years of this couple's lives, in which they wrote to one another each and every day, with very few exceptions. Volume 1 covers 1942 - 1943 when Sgt. Mueller was in training and still stationed in the U.S. Volumes 2 and 3 will contain letters written during 1944 and 1945 after he was deployed to Europe. You'll read about his arrival in England, his ill-fated transfer to France on the S.S. Empire Javelin, the sinking of that ship and the dramatic rescue, his arrival in France and more.

Memorabilia from England, Germany, France, Belgium and other locations will be included as .pdf scans.

Kathy Mandell (aka K.S. Mueller) is a writer and lifelong dog lover whose work explores love, memory, and the profound bond between humans and their animals. She is a certified Pet Loss Grief Specialist through the Association of Pet Loss and Bereavement, as well as a certified Pet Loss Grief Mentor through the Center For Pet Loss Grief.

After losing Hobie — her loyal Labrador/Shepherd mix and once-in-a-lifetime heart dog — she began writing him letters as a way to navigate grief and honor the life they shared.

Those letters became Dear Hobie: Letters to My Heart Dog, a sentimental memoir offering comfort to anyone who has loved and lost a cherished companion.

When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found with her animals, walking the beach, singing, spending time with her husband, two dogs and one cat, and all the while remembering Hobie with gratitude. She believes that dogs never truly leave us — they simply stay close in a different way.
