Marcel Reich-Ranicki was a Polish-born German literary critic and member of the literary group Gruppe 47. He was regarded as one of the most influential contemporary literary critics in the field of German literature and has often been called Literaturpapst ("Pope of Literature") in Germany.
Das Buch enthält Artikel zu einzelnen Autoren "von gestern". Ich habe die Autoren ausgewählt, die ich gelesen habe oder derzeit Gegenstand meines Lesestoffes sind. Die Bücher MRR schätze ich immer sehr.
In Nachprüfung, Reich-Ranicki scrutinizes authors active from the turn of the 20th century until the outbreak of World War II. The book consists of one, two or three short essays on each of the about 20 authors covered which mostly were previously published in newspapers. A common thread is accessing their published correspondence to get a deeper insight into their personalities aside from their books.
In fact, this is a more interesting perspective on these authors than the usual perspective of analyzing an author by his works as Reich-Ranicki did in Deutsche Literatur in West und Ost for contemporary authors after WW II. Nachprüfung is also more interesting as the chosen authors more consistently have an appeal for me. My appraisement of the mentioned authors is enriched by the evaluations given here.
