E' un libro molto particolare, la storia di una non-amicizia.
Siamo subito catturati dallo stile incisivo e colloquiale, che ci porta dritti nel mezzo del dramma e terrà desta la nostra attenzione fino all'ultimissima pagina, quando finalmente riusciremo a capire dove voleva andare a parare il romanzo.
Infatti non è il solito young adult in cui due amiche per la pelle si trovano invischiate in un brutto guaio e con la forza dell'amicizia riusciranno a venirne fuori. Anzi, tutto il contrario.
E' un romanzo che gioca a sovvertire le nostre aspettative e arrivati a fine lettura saremo costretti ad ammettere quello che ci sembrava impossibile: la narratrice Jess non è una brava persona. Ha avuto mille occasioni per fare la cosa giusta e invece ha sempre scelto la via più comoda e facile. Ci vuole coraggio a scegliere come protagonista una ragazzina egoista e vigliacca e di questo va reso merito all'autrice: in mezzo ad un mare di young adult popolati da grandi eroi o perfidi cattivoni, trovare rappresentata la meschinità quotidiana è una piacevole ventata di novità. Peccato che non abbia mantenuto la stessa verosimiglianza col personaggio di Casey, che invece è la tipica eroina YA senza macchia e senza paura, eccessivamente perfetta e poco realistica.
L'estrema brevità poi non permette un adeguato approfondimento dei tanti temi trattati: ad esempio il background familiare di Jess non riesce a ritagliarsi il giusto spazio nell'economia della vicenda e risulta molto randomico, messo in mezzo per rendere più interessante la protagonista.
Al di là di questi peccatucci veniali è un libro originale e appassionante, consigliato a chi cerca uno young adult diverso dai soliti.

Romanzo poco conosciuto, ma davvero apprezzabile. Parla di amicizia, delle difficoltà adolescenziali, di diversità e del bisogno di appartenenza.
L'ignoranza della compagnia del Cactus (mai nome fu più azzeccato) mi ha un po' ricordato la situazione di intolleranza che stiamo vivendo ultimamente e non aggiungo altro.
Jessica è una ragazza molto fragile e pavida che non riesce mai a trovare la forza di fare la cosa giusta, nemmeno quando viene apertamente umiliata da quelli che pensava fossero i suoi nuovi amici. Per tutto il libro ho fatto il tifo per lei, sperando che ritrovasse la dignità e la forza di ribellarsi, ma non c'è stato verso.
Stephanie è odiosa. Forse il personaggio è fin troppo caricaturato, ma non sono riuscita a dispiacermi per la sua morte.
Casey è eccezionale per la fiducia che ripone sempre nel prossimo ed è eccezionale nel suo riuscire sempre ad essere se stessa. Si soprannomina la mantide perché, quando si accorge che qualcuno non fa per lei, semplicemente lo elimina dalla sua vita, senza ripensamenti e rancori.
L'unico personaggio che compie un'evoluzione in questo romanzo è quello della professoressa Burke. Mentre gli altri rimangono sostanzialmente quello che sono dall'inizio alla fine, la professoressa Burke passa da una condizione di sottomissione e timore al coraggio di manifestare apertamente le proprie opinioni. Pagherà per questo, ma ne sarà ben lieta uscendone a testa alta.
Ecco, l'episodio della professoressa che parla al megafono e le conseguenze che suscita con addirittura l'arrivo della polizia mi è sembrato veramente eccessivo. Non penso che il semplice parlare al megafono di una scuola possa essere così sconvolgente da dover far intervenire le forze dell'ordine.
Per il resto il romanzo è sicuramente una buona lettura che fa riflettere.

Questo libro mi ha lasciato addosso un grande senso di rabbia.
Jess non ha la più pallida idea di cosa sia la lealtà. Ha solo paura di restare da sola e non esita a voltare le spalle alla sua migliore amica.
Meglio perderla che trovarla.

As a lover of film noir I was immediately drawn into Deborah Ellis's TRUE BLUE by the tone of the opening scene set in an old-time diner (my favorite of all settings) with a waitress serving a cup of Joe to an undisclosed character, and telling him or her, "I guess there's a lot you know. But there's a lot more you don't know. You might as well get comfortable. Strap in, drink your coffee." Granted, the reader isn't clear (at least I wasn't) whether the speaker is fifteen or fifty (turns out it's the former), but the voice is so captivating and intimate it hardly matters, one is immediately hooked and ready to listen as the story unfolds. It is a story that explores loyalty (or lack thereof) between lifelong friends, the bigotry and cruelty of small town minds, and the failure of parents to know what their teen is feeling.

Deborah Ellis is the award-winning, internationally acclaimed author of many books set in developing countries, which focus on the plight of teens struggling to live in those countries. This new book, published by the charming new publisher Pajama Press, is a departure for Ellis, a mystery set against the backdrop of themes that are as strong as any in her other work. TRUE BLUE is not a perfect book. Casey seems too perfect and the townsfolk too uniformly cruel, but these flaws seem minor in the face of the authentic emotions of the teen characters. The reader sees into Jess's heart and soul and feels for her. Her parents aren't really there for her. Her mother is ill and her father is weak. She has been an outsider for so long that she mistakes the advances of the popular crowd for friendship and acceptance. It's a mistake she'll live with all her life, as she tells us at the end of this impressive book. The gripping suspense and surprise ending will leave readers demanding that Deborah Ellis write another mystery.

Este libro es del género de misterio y nos habla sobre la amistad y como a veces puede llegar a ser lo que no esperamos.
La historia está situada en un pueblo en Canadá que se llama Galloway (el cual no se si es real porque lo busque y no apareció tal cual) este libro nos habla sobre la relación de Casey y Jess, las cuales han sido amigas desde niñas, pero Casey termina siendo arrestada por homicidio y es ahí donde su amistad se pone a prueba.
Este es un libro muy interesante, me gustó, pero no diría que es de mis favoritos debido a que tuve varios conflictos con la historia y más con la narradora, la cual es Jess y debo decir que su actitud y personalidad a través del libro puede ser irritante, pero también egoísta e ingenua. Pero del otro lado tenemos a Casey, quien es un personaje demasiado peculiar pero al mismo tiempo dulce y te llegas a encariñar con ella. Y como un buen libro de misterio, la historia te mantiene super sumergida y no lo puedes soltar hasta terminarlo y conforme va pasando la historia vas creando tus propias teorías, que me hubiera gustado que fueran ciertas, por que asi hubiera tenido otro giro la historia pero eso le quitaría la esencia de lo que realmente es.
El final no es uno de los mejores, pero nos da a entender que no todo esto es sobre el caso de Casey, sino como realmente lo percibe la gente y cómo se crean sus propias ideas o imagen de lo que pasó, siendo bueno o malo.
Es un libro que si recomiendo y más si te gusta el género de misterio, también es muy fácil de leer y tan solo tiene 204 páginas.

Jess’s friend Casey is accused of murdering one of the children at the summer camp where they both worked as counselors. Though Jess doesn’t really believe Casey is capable of murder, she finds it hard to stand up for her friend when the collective judgment of the small town where they live comes down upon her. Without Casey, Jess is friendless until a group of popular kids suddenly takes an interest in her. Jess eventually realizes that they are using her for information about Casey, but by then the damage has been done, and her statements, which sound incriminating taken out of context, end up on the internet and in the local newspaper. Jess’s last chance to be a true friend to Casey comes when she is called to testify at her trial. Does Jess have the courage to share the information she’s been withholding even if it means incriminating herself?

While True Blue has an intriguing premise as a dark psychological novel, it failed to deliver in many ways. The author frames the narrative with Jess telling her story to a customer who has come into the diner where she works in the middle to the night. It soon becomes clear that Jess is an unreliable narrator, which you would expect to make her character thought provoking and complex. Unfortunately, Jess is not all that remarkable. In the end, she is a selfish teenager, who wants friendship and recognition without doing anything to earn them. Nothing about her was that far out of the ordinary. The rest of the characters were pretty flat and uninteresting as well. The story resolves quickly and with too little explanation. Without spoiling anything, the outcome for both Jess and Casey, though not a happy ending, seems very unrealistic.

I picked this novel up a few years back due to school, and never have I ever been this hooked by a novel I read for an obligatory book report before. Hell, it's easily become one of my favorite books of all time. It's exasperating, it's addicting, it's captivating. It makes you think and reflect on loyalty, morals and most importantly, friendship and hardships. Jess is an awful person and she completely angers you and makes you feel bitter in all the right ways. Deborah Ellis has a gift and is easily one of the best writers I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Truly a magnificent novel everyone should read.

A qualche giorno dal termine del libro devo ammettere di non sapere bene cosa ne penso, si tratta di una storia che mi ha lasciato piuttosto interdetta e che ho faticato ad inquadrare. La trama racconta delle sedicenni Casey e Jess, amiche da tutta la vita, che come ogni anno lavorano insieme come capogruppo nel campo estivo i Dieci Salici. Tutto procede bene fino a quando una bambina assegnata al loro gruppo, la piccola Stephanie Glass, viene ritrovata morta e Casey viene arrestata con l'accusa di omicidio colposo. La storia ci viene raccontata dal punto di vista di Jess, che ripercorre attraverso dei flashback le settimane trascorse al campo estivo e successivamente lo svolgimento delle indagini e del processo al quale lei dovrà testimoniare.
Trama senza dubbio interessante e originale, soprattutto visto il target a cui il romanzo si rivolge, ma a cui secondo me manca qualcosa. Voglio spezzare una lancia a favore del libro perché non posso negare che, nel leggerlo, è riuscito a coinvolgermi tantissimo: mi ci sono letteralmente tuffata dentro, divorandolo tutto in una notte senza riuscire a staccarmi dalle pagine. Uno dei pregi dell'autrice è la capacità di trasmettere le sensazioni usando poche parole: Il coraggio della libellula è un libro breve e coinvolgente, ma anche scorrevole, lo si legge davvero in un soffio.
Nell'istante in cui ho voltato l'ultima pagina, nel cuore della notte, ho pensato che fosse un romanzo per adolescenti davvero valido, lontano dalle solite storie già viste e riviste. L'autrice affronta anche delle tematiche scomode e delicate al di fuori di quella dell'accusa di omicidio, in particolare sono presenti disabilità e salute mentale che, in un contesto già difficile, offrono al lettore uno spaccato della vita di Jess e di quanto spesso al giorno d'oggi gli adolescenti siano lasciati a se stessi ad affrontare anche le difficoltà più grandi. Tra bullismo, insicurezze e la sensazione di non essere accettati dalla società e dai coetanei, Il coraggio della libellula tocca degli argomenti che ritengo realmente interessanti, e lo fa con naturalezza, trasmettendo al tempo stesso una profonda sensazione di disagio.
Tutte queste emozioni negative vengono riversate sul lettore attraverso Jess, la protagonista, uno dei personaggi più scomodi che ricordo di aver mai incontrato. Il suo ruolo è costruito abilmente dall'autrice, Jess è un'adolescente sleale e fragile, con il quale è praticamente impossibile empatizzare, il che rende la lettura davvero insolita e grottesca.
Nonostante quello che sto per dire, se gli YA vi piacciono e avete voglia di una storia un po' macabra e che vi tenga con il fiato sospeso vi consiglio di recuperarlo perché a modo suo è interessante.
Purtroppo però ho riscontrato anche delle pecche. Dell'antipatia di Jess ho già parlato, come ho detto non ci sono dubbi sul fatto che l'autrice l'abbia modellata esattamente per suscitare sensazioni contrastanti e nel contesto della storia questa scelta è sensata ma ciò non toglie che, avendola detestata, la lettura non sia sempre stata piacevole. La delusione più grande però è stata il finale, davvero sbrigativo e poco soddisfacente. Il caso di risolve senza pathos, in poche pagine, lasciando l'amaro in bocca al lettore e strappando un classico - quanto spiacevole - "tutto qui?" una volta girata l'ultima pagina.
È il genere di libro che secondo me poteva permettersi di più: più trama, più carne al fuoco, più pagine. Sarebbe stato davvero interessante ricamare più prove e indizi sul caso della piccola Stephenie Glass, era un romanzo con un grande potenziale, ma che non ha saputo dare il meglio. L'autrice ha preso una trama valida, con tematiche coraggiose, e l'ha tagliata e semplificata fino ad ottenerne una versione debole e troppo breve. Sono certa che, osando di più, ne sarebbe venuta fuori una storia indimenticabile, cruda e forte.
Anche se il potenziale del romanzo non è stato sfruttato al meglio, lo reputo comunque un buon YA Thriller, che mi ha ricordato alcuni libri dello stesso genere che da adolescente avevo adorato, quindi mi sento comunque di consigliarlo.

Casey e Jessica sono due amiche, sin dall'infanzia.
Casey ha da sempre una sfrenata passione per gli insetti, vorrebbe diventare entomologa e girare il mondo a studiare le specie più rare.
Gli animali sono tutto il suo mondo e ogni episodio della sua vita viene posto in parallelo al comportamento animale, quasi vivesse sempre all'interno di un documentario.
È una studentessa modello, ha in programma un viaggio-studio in Australia, è responsabile in un campo estivo scout ma è considerata dagli altri studenti "quella strana" perché invece che correre dietro ai ragazzi, rincorre mantidi, blatte, cimici ecc...ecc...
Jessica è la sua migliore amica, una ragazza sportiva e indipendente che si sente un po' trascurata dalla passione di Casey per gli animali.
Sono l'una (Casey) la mantide religiosa, l'altra (Jessica) la libellula e sono inseparabili.
Quando al campo estivo una bambina sparisce e poi viene trovata uccisa, Casey viene arrestata.
Jessica ci racconta come vive quei momenti, i suoi sentimenti per la mantide.
Ma i suoi racconti non sono quelli che ci si aspetterebbero.

Romanzo che non mi ha molto convinto.
Sebbene possa essere considerato interessante nella parte in cui si scava all'interno di un'amicizia adolescenziale, nella quale necessariamente albergano invidie e gelosie, la trama è debole.
La narratrice mi ha indisposto da subito e ho trovato l'epilogo piuttosto sbrigativo e raffazzonato e non ho capito il titolo. Io non ho trovato alcunché di coraggioso né tantomeno di pavido in Jessica, solo grande immaturità e cattiveria.
Non lo rileggere né lo consiglierei al target a cui è destinato essendo definito uno young adult.

Siento que este libro es mucho más de lo que parece. Lo he amado cada segundo (talvez y excepto el final), desde la forma en que los personajes esta escrito (que siempre es lo que más le pongo atencion en los libros) hasta la historias. Los personajes eran unicos, entrañables y odiosos, tal como los personas en la vida real. En los momentos que he pensado que la protagonista (Jess) es lo más odiosa del mundo, me recuerdo que yo misma he sido peor en algun momento. No es su culpa sentir tanto odio, ni ser tan fria o colculadora, era una adolescente que se sentia sola y yo lo entiendo completamente. La historia me parecio hermosa, en la mayoria de libros sobre crimenes que he leido, la protagonista intenta liberar a la persona dentro de la carcel con toda su alma, su lealtad hacia esta es tanta que termina rompiendo miles de leyes, pero nadie en la vida real haria eso, me gusto la forma en que habla sobre como no le importa, a Jess no le importa Casey ni su madre, es solo una adolescente que se interesa en si misma. Entre más avanza la historia más creia que no era una mentira, ni ficcion, la creia y vivia, enojandome con todos con forme avanzaba, sabia que yo no seria mejor que ninguna de esas personas perversas.

Personally, I didn’t love this book, I usually quite enjoy books written by Deborah Ellis but I found this murder mystery quite boring. This novel tells the story of a teenage girl named Jess, her life is turned upside down when her best friend, Casey, is accused of murder. The book explores the themes of loyalty, justice, and the power of perception. I found the writing over simplified and using many filler words. The main character Jess, who is also the narrator never seemed to have much emotional depth which made her reactions and thoughts seem bland. I think the main theme of the novel was to get you to question what friendship means but by the end of the book I never felt like it fully developed. Along with that, the end of the book felt very rushed and I was never fully satisfied with the ending. I believe this book would be good to younger readers because it is short and really easy to follow. Overall I didn’t love the book but I would definitely recommend it to someone who likes a quite easy read with a light mystery.

Esta historia me ha inquietado de un modo que pocas lo han hecho. Y no se muy bien por qué, pero el caso es que lo ha hecho. Y un libro capaz de hacerte sentir y removerte en el asiento es un buen indicativo. En esta historia se nos presenta el asesinato de una niña durante un campamento de verano. En el foco de la policía se hallan dos adolescentes monitoras de la niña en el campamento. Con esta premisa se expone de manera clara y concisa la burbuja que estalla cuando un asesinato se mediatiza. Se expone lo peor pero también la cara más amable de las personas así como los sentimientos y miedos que se dan en una situación como ésta. Atrapante y absorbente desde el minuto uno. Totalmente recomendable.

Aunque no me fascinan los finales abiertos, creo que este no está nada mal. Parte de mi sabe que es un final con esperanza, porque a pesar de todo lo difícil que tuvo que pasar Casey siendo una muy buena persona, siempre se mantuvo digna y sin dudar de sí misma, y eso es valiente.
Dolió un poco saber lo fácil que te pueden traicionar tus amigos solo por ese sentimiento de soledad. Y aunque al final Jess tiene un plan para remediarlo, se le adelantan.
Y era frase al final de la carta "Libélula. Eras tan valiente" auch.
Es un historia muy real y vale la pena leerla.

I'm sad to say that I was disappointed by this novel from Deborah Ellis. Clearly I finished it, and thus the 3.0 rating, but I found it lacking in depth, which I didn't expect from the author. I was curious as to where it would go (which is why I finished it), and appreciated the examination of teenage friendship, I just felt it was a little lacking in some way. Also the protagonist's disconnect with her mother's mental health issues felt a little too removed for me, in terms of authenticity. Won't stop me from reading her next book though!

En general es un libro entretenido pero MUY frustrante debido a la voz narrativa, a cargo de un personaje voluble, cobarde y errático.
Jess cuenta la historia de como su mejor amiga es acusada de asesinato y como ella debe enfrentar la situación sin preocuparse por nadie más que ella misma, aún cuando sus declaraciones son clave para el caso en contra de Cassie, tomando decisiones cada vez más cuestionables y absurdas, solo para mantenerse a flote.
Francamente, no es un libro malo, pero tampoco es algo que se disfrute, además el final es demasiado abrupto y no resolutivo del todo.

Cuando terminé este libro había tantos pensamientos en mi cabeza que no pude articular nada o casi nada de inmediato.
"Bichos raros" no es un thriller como aparenta ser. Es la crudeza de ser joven cuando el sistema judicial, tus amigos y tu país te da la espalda.
Deborah Ellis se mete en la piel de los jóvenes y les mira con mucha transparencia. La juventud no es una época mágica e idílica, sino compleja.
Ser joven es como traer un manto de invisibilidad o la boca cocida. No existes y tu voz no se escucha. Y si existes es a partir de las proyecciones de los demás.

I've seen reviews describing Jess as struggling to be a loyal friend. There was no struggle. She did nothing to support her friend. She wasn't loyal. She was selfish and lazy to the point of blaming Casey for being arrested and leaving her alone. Jess was absolutely delusional.
The sudden ending that bailed Jess out from having to complete her testimony at the trial felt like lazy writing as well. A thoroughly disappointing end to this book.

Questo libro è uno di quei casi "vorrei, ma non posso..." o almeno a me ha dato questa sensazione.
La storia non è male, ma sicuramente si poteva fare qualcosina in più.
Alcune cose sono state lasciate un po' al caso, ad esempio avrei approfondito un po' di più la psicologia delle due protagoniste.
Nell'insieme è stata una lettura senza infamia e senza lode.

Me gustó el libro, es facil de leer. Solo puedo decir que realmente no hay ningún personaje que pudiera ser amigo mío. Aunque entienda a Jess no le quita lo desleal y molesta que me pareció. Creo que Casey es más rescatable pero en algunas partes se veía egocéntrica. Aunque me parece correcto su final sería lindo ver una reconciliación :)

Reminded me of Robert Cormier’s The Chocolate War for its depiction of the cruelty a group of people can be capable of. The narrator is unlikable, yes, partly, I think, because she reminds us of when we too have not chosen courage when we could and should have.

Al principio me costó leerlo pero llega un momento en el que te atrapa y no puedes parar de leerlo, tiene una trama interesante, un buen libro, también supero mis expectativas.
