My first time reading through this book was when I was a freshman in college. I took a class called Theology of Prayer, and this was my textbook. It was easily one of my favorite classes at any level of school and I loved this book. Although I used the intro to this book in teaching multiple times, it took me nearly three decades to get around to reading this again in its entirety.

The largest chunk of this book walks through nearly every prayer offered in the Bible (Psalms simply uses a few examples rather than exploring each one) and what we can learn from it. In the Old Testament we explore the prayers of the patriarchs, the prayers of Moses, the prayers of the kings, and the prayers of the prophets. A significant section is given to the prayers of Jesus, then the early church, the teachings of Paul, and the other epistles. Finally, there is a section on prayer in contemporary practice.

The book is a bit more dense and dry than I remembered, but still loaded with great information and multiple times I did need to put it aside and apply it. But the book this time around didn't seem to be the life-changing read it was for me as a freshman. Perhaps part of that was that I am not the same person I was half a lifetime ago. Even more, now I am reading it for enjoyment and enrichment where before, every couple of pages was followed by 20-30 minutes of prayer time. Books like this are best read slowly with regular moments of immediate application.

If you're looking for a studying on prayer that will challenge you to go deeper and embrace a life of prayer more fully, then this is the book for you. It's written in a conversational versus an academic style so you need not be a Biblical scholar to benefit from the wisdom bound within this text. Examine the role of prayer throughout the Bible whether explicit or implicit and challenge how you've viewed the purpose and role of prayer.

A good Pentecostal understanding on prayer. The book covers prayer from both the Old and New Testament as well as looking into Pentecostal perspectives on prayer such as intercession, praying in the Spirit, praying in tongues, etc. I enjoyed this book.

Simply put, this book is boring. It should be labeled as an encyclopedia on prayer rather than something one would actually read. The first 163 pages were just laying out each and every instance in which prayer is incorporated in the Bible. Again, that is fine for reference, but you're essentially just reading the Bible if you choose to sit down and read it like a book. This book isn't so much telling you about prayer as it is simply laying out all the ways prayer was utilized in the Bible. This is an excruciating read for students; just read your Bible.

Global University has a subject called Theology of Prayer. Quite and outstanding course. This is one of the required reading books. Very practical with lots of scripture references.
