Fairly tedious description of all the medical treatments Zhang Jie's mother went through in the final period of her life, and all of Zhang Jie's decision making, worries, thoughts and heaps of guilt during this time. It was a tedious read, but very recognisable to all of us who have an ageing parent who needs care. Also recognisable for those of us who lived in China in the 1980's. So in the end the book generated a lot of animated discussion in our China book club.

The Dutch translation didn't do the read any favours.
