By and large, I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Several really were my favorite type of science fiction and I will be looking into checking out other items by those authors. It seems that many of my favorites were by Bruce Davis.

A few weren't to my taste; some had waaayyy to much "science" in them and a few weren't comfortable in their viewpoints. But that's the value of collections like this, other readers may like the exact opposite of my choices and that's OK. I have to admit that I wasn't that familiar with all of the authors in the work, but I will be watching for several of their names on future items.

Recommended.

A wonderful mix of quick short stories that tease the imagination and leave you wondering and wanting more. Lots of varied topics in science fiction and suitable for younger readers as well.

34 short stories from a group of extremely talented writers.

SFNovelist is a “hard” science fiction writer’s workshop that has been in existence for a number of years. It’s a peer-to-peer organization where the members critique each other’s work (similar to most face-to-face local literary workshops). The difference being that SFNovelist is International in scope and works over the Internet. The organization has writers and published authors in all skill levels, from rank rookies working on their first novel to published authors who have mastered their craft.

Once a year, they hold a short story writing contest within the “club” with some central theme and rules. Horizons is a collection of the best of these entries from several years’ contests.

With 34 stories to pick from, there’s something in here for every science fiction taste. Some I liked and some I was happy to finish so I could go on to the next. It’s all a matter of taste. Probably why they used three editors, so that one person’s taste didn’t predominate.

All of the stories were well-written. Some didn’t appeal to me personally, in spite of the obvious talent of the particular author. Some were more “exposition” than character-driven which puts me off right up front.

A few, I’ve seen before in other publications, which argues for a more universal appeal.

Of the lot, my 5-star favorites were (in no particular order):
· Truckin’ Off to Kalimbog by Bruce Davis (one of my favorite authors)
· Naivete’ by Richard Winder (I’ve seen this one before – funnnnnyyyy)
· Elements of a Champion by Michael J. Martineck
· Heat by Al Philipson

I was “tight” with 5-star ratings. It takes a very good story to get a “5” from me. There were other good stories that I enjoyed, mostly 4-star material; and a few 3-star stories. Fortunately, there are no “1”s or “2”s in the lot.

If you like “hard” SF short stories and you can find a copy of this anthology, I can recommend it to you.
