Not really worth reviewing in my opinion. One thing was ridiculously noteworthy, though: The mermaids' tails are of the conveniently modest and young-adult-like clean sort: "By the time I had unclasped my bra and slipped out of my panties, I could feel the protective sheath of shimmering blue-green scales covering me from nipple to nipple and down across my belly to obscure my nudity." Ehhhh? I thought scales were part of the merfolk's nature and not a costume? How can they use their nipples for - let's say - feeding, if they are hidden under a "sheath of scales"?

Let me start off by saying that I didn't realize this was such a short book that cut off right before things really started happening. I found this for free on Amazon right after I finished the Blood Like Poison series by M. Leighton. I liked her work so much that I wanted to read more of her stories.
This book is about a girl named Madly who is a mermaid princess. It sounds kind of silly, so I'm glad I didn't know much about this book before reading it because I probably wouldn't have picked it up, but I'm glad I did read it because I can already tell that I'm going to like this series. It looks like it's going to be a mixture of a bunch of fairy tales and that has me kind of pumped. There's action right off the bat and it continues through the whole book. This is my first mermaid book and I'm excited to read Madly and Wolfhardt, which I just bought on my Kindle :)

Ok. Let me start off by saying that this is on my list of Top 10 favorite books. That is definitely saying something.
We start off with Madly, a mermaid, who's content in her life but things turn to upheavel as they usually do in stories. The one she thinks she wants soon becomes the one she might be forced to marry. The one she can't have soon becomes the one she can't live without. That sounds fatastic doesn't it! It gets better.
Jackson is a dream. He's moral and strong and fights with himself so hard to do what's right for their people and Madly. He knows that her loving him would mean trouble for her and tries to spare her that. He's harsh but sweet. He's rugged but soft on the inside. Madly is so blind to his utter fascination with her and it's incredibly endearing to read that instead of whining and aloofness about relationships. These two are destined in more ways than one.
Then we throw in some werewolves! Fascinating how she threw these ideas together. The action and background to the story was just right. There would be a twist in the love story and then something magical would happen and Madly would be forced to fight or bicker with someone. Then she'd be back to pining for Jackson right before having to jump in the water and be pulled down water drains.
Mrs. Leighton has swiftly become a favorite of mine and I'd suggest you check out her work. Her other series, Blood Like Poison is genius and I'm about to start her many others. Happy Reading!

I'd give this book 3.5 stars as opposed to 3... it is more of an introduction of what is to come and the main characters seem to be as cute as the story could be...
I think the following books are going to centre around Lore (in our world it is fairy tales) and the capturing of the escaped characters, thus giving us the beginning of book two.
This book is a quick read, it seems a little rushed in places but you have to admit that the cover is startlingly gorgeous.
I will read book two soon, just to see where this is headed.

This was actually an immensely enjoyable and highly original little quick read. It’s very well-written and engaging and I pretty much liked everything about it, except maybe for the swoony romance which induced some eye-rolling, but overall I definitely recommend it to readers looking for something a little different. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series some time.

In this novelette we are introduced to Madly James and the world in which she lives. On the surface, you would think she is a typical 17-year-old, but in actuality, she is a princess. Atlas, her home, lies deep beneath the sea. Magic protects Atlas and the town of Slumber. Here, she and her friends attend school and learn to interact outside Atlas with the human world. Then something happens, something that hasn't happened in hundreds of years, a Mer is murdered, but that is only the beginning. Someone has released the dreaded Lore, and they are holding Atlas, and Madly's family captive. As a result of the murder, someone from Madly's past steps back into her life, Sentinel Jackson Hamilton, hotness incarnate, the object of her affection for as long as she can remember. The problem is that she is betrothed to another who like her, is of royal blood. He is also her best friend, Aidan. Not only does Madly have to deal with the crisis of saving her race, but also the battle between her heart and her head, because the heart wants what the heart wants.
This is the perfect beginning to an absolutely awesome series. I loved Madly, and Jackson, well let's just say he makes you sizzle just to think about him. Aidan and Jersey (who is also Jackson's sister), are Madly's best friends and they have been together forever. They were fun to get to know, especially Jersey. The story is fast paced, entertaining, and romantic. Trust me, these Mer folk are some you really want to get to know. M. Leighton has done an outstanding job of laying the groundwork for a mesmerizing series.
This is the perfect beginning to an absolutely awesome series. I loved Madly, and Jackson, well let's just say he makes you sizzle just to think about him. This was just a romance novel for young girls complete with brooding rude anti hero hunk, instaluv, dipsy dumb giggling airhead MC and dumbass friends, more luv and a background story with dangerous stuff happening that is overshadowed by the LURVE. Bleah!

There is nothing more disappointing than reading a book that you are sure you are going to love, but ending up really disliking it. I had no real reason to think that this book would be bad. It is about mermaids (which I happen to quite like), it focuses on a forbidden romance, (which being the moron that I am happens to get under my skin every time) and it has an extremely high rating on Goodreads. It seems as though everyone loves this book…everyone but me.
I will start with a positive. The book’s cover is simply gorgeous, I love it. If I could rate this book on its cover alone it would get a 5 star rating from me. But judging a book by its cover is wrong, as we all know.
So why did I dislike this book so much? Well, firstly it is brutally unrealistic. Here are some examples: The main characters find the dead body of someone they know and care for. Five minutes later they are laughing and talking about going to the beach, also one of them is ogling the ‘typical YA’ hot guy. Because you know, who cares that this person is dead, that dude is hot!
There are other things too. Madly (who I will get to in a minute) is a princess who has to save the world…but she still has time for, and people still expect her to go to school. Obviously education is more important than saving the world from imminent danger.
Another reason I didn’t like this book is the characters. I didn’t like them. They could have walked out of any other YA PNR book. You have Madly, the perfect one. Jersey, the bubbly and hyperactive best friend. Aiden, the boy next door who is a bit of a wimp, he should be the one the perfect girl should fall for if it wasn’t for Jackson, the ‘hotter than hell’ broody, moody and quite frankly miserable one.
Madly is the one I had a real problem with. I thought she was terrible and completely dislikeable. She acts like a spoilt brat and when she is not doing that she tends to be fainting, and if she is not being a spoilt brat or fainting she is wondering why Jackson sets off fireworks, butterflies, shivers and any other physical reaction she can have when he touches her and Aiden doesn’t.
Also, despite Jackson practically telling her (it really is that obvious to everyone) that he is into her she spends a lot of time asking herself the following questions: why is he looking at me like that? Why doesn’t he like me? Why is he acting this way? She is completely oblivious.
I guess it is safe to say I will not be carrying on with this series. On paper everything looked great but in reality I was totally disappointed. I would not recommend this book. However, I seem to be the only one who wouldn’t so maybe you shouldn’t listen to me and try it for yourselves.

After seeing several tweets about this series and it's main hottie over the last week I had to see what all the talk was about, so I decided to buy the first novella and see for myself. I was not disappointed! I started Madly while waiting in the doctors office with my husband and every time the poor man would try to talk to me he would quickly get shut down so I could continue reading. I was immediately sucked into this unique world of a mermaid princess, her friends, and escaped fairy tale prisoners.
Madly is a spunky teenager who just happens to also be a mermaid princess and the only hope for her family and her kingdom. Just in the short 50 pages of this novella I really enjoyed getting to know her character and that of her friends Jersey and Aiden. Jersey is the kind of friend who seems like she would always be up for some mischief-making and Aiden is so sweet and loyal.
We were also introduced to super hottie Jackson. If I had one problem with this book it was that what little there was hinted at an upcoming relationship was frustrating. I was ready for it to speed up...haha. He is one swoon-worthy male lead! Protective, strong, and although he is a little aloof its not in a mean way. He's also very funny, which I LOVE! I just wanted MORE between them, but since I was ASSURED by the author that it was coming I guess I will have to be patient...sigh...I'm not very good at that ;) I also don't see how Madly didn't see that Jackson is completely head over heels for her. The girl must be blind.

This is a novelette, and I feel like this is a very promising start to the series!
Madly is about mermaids, but it seems there are other fairy tale characters in it, which I thought was pretty fascinating. Madly, the main character, was awesome. I loved that she took charge. Jackson was...smoldering. Really interested in reading more about their relationship! I would have liked more of Madly's friends Aidan and Jersey. They were completely overshadowed whenever Jackson was around. Jersey and Jackson are even siblings, and it didn't feel that way. But since this is only a glimpse into the series, I'm sure we'll get more of them in the second book.
I thought the writing was great, and I'm looking forward to more! I would recommend this to fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout!

Now it’s up to Madly to find a way to recapture the prisoners and save her family.
I enjoyed this book, although it’s really more like the opening few chapters of a book rather than a story in its own right (there’s no end as such), it’s more a bit of a teaser for Madly and Wolfhardt.
I liked Madly and how headstrong she is, and the introduction of the very lovely Jackson seems set to become a fiery romance! Can’t wait to find out more about Atlas, the prisoners, and of course, Jackson!
This book will definitely leave you wanting more!

Step into the world of mermaids - and as far as I can tell, a werewolf may also be in attendance in a not so distant future (although, how their worlds are going to intersect remains to be seen). This is a short story; a preamble to the second book, Wolfhardt. It certainly is an exciting start to what proves to be a series enriched in folklores. Me? I'm dying to read more about Jackson. He's big, burly, surly and snarky. His personality just seems to dwarf everybody else in the story. I've always been smitten with egotistical boys who are clueless about handling their true emotions and my boy Jackson is no different. I'm a little cautious when it comes to books about mermaids but this one has my full attention. I can't wait to read the next book. Shout out: Thanks to Alexa for the recommendation!

Recommended for: People who like swoony romances that involve a lot of fluttery feelings, people who like a unique take on classic lore and fairy-tales, people who want a quick read, people who don't mind the crucial need to buy the next book
Oh no, the dreaded 3-star review. Well, I don’t think 3 stars is bad at all…it means I didn’t love the book, but I liked it. Liking is good. I like chocolate, too.
Madly is Leighton’s short and sweet novella about a Madly, a Mermaid Princess – and it’s not as Disney-cheesy as that sounds.
Pros:
- Leighton captured the voice of her MC very well and was a believable teenager and princess all rolled into one. Madly was brave and determined (when she wasn’t drooling over Jackson)
- I liked the easy, breezy casual writing style
- The world-building was very unique and original. It wasn’t just a mermaid book (and that alone would have been unique since this is my first mermaid book – mer virgin here!), it captured a lot of other mythical beasts, legends and fairytale characters. I kinda likened it to The Mortal Instruments Series…lots of different items thrown together in a bag and shaken, but with Leighton’s world, I think it works
-The plot was intriguing and kept the (virtual) pages turning
- Love the cover…madly
- I’m not rating the author here, but Leighton is a pretty fabulous person
Cons:
- The book could use a bit of editing. Not in the “so many typos” sense because I didn’t find any and not in the “author can’t write” sense because it’s apparent that Leighton can write and well at that. However, the book was filled with two flaws that kept standing out to me and thus interrupted the flow of the story (I seem to be the only reviewer noticing this so I might just be strangely nitpicky today)
A) too much passive voice was used. For example, “Aggravated, my shackles rose” or “Casually, he turned his back on me.” Once in a while this is fine, but to me, it seemed to happen on every page.
B) in conjunction with the passive voice, there were too many descriptive words used. It just ended up being wordy and redundant. As a writer this is one of my own biggest faults, so I suppose I’m just hyper-aware of it when I see it. I love words. It’s hard not to describe the crap out of everything and I’m thankful for my editor for cutting most of mine out. And even then I wish he’d be harder on me. Less is more
- I didn’t get the love story. It wasn’t insta-love, thank God, because Madly had an admitted crush on Jackson for years, but I just didn’t get it. There didn’t seem to be anything there beyond physical attraction and as such he didn’t win me over. I got that Madly was in love/lust with the mer dude but I just didn’t care about him. Her feelings were also a tad repetitive. Then again, I’m not a huge fan of swoony romancey stuff (I’ve never seen the Notebook and don’t get me started on Twilight)and we only get a few pages to really learn about both of them
- Ended super abruptly. But kudos to Leighton, it does spur you onto the next book because you want to know what happens next, damnit!
All in all, this was a quick, fun and interesting read. There were a few detractors which hampered my enjoyment but I look forward to reading the next one in the series (yes, I just bought Book 2 and Book 3 comes out this month). I think more depth and length might do the characters and story better justice and I am very intrigued by this Wolfhardt character (I've always wanted to meet the big bad wolf).

- I didn’t get the love story. It wasn’t insta-love, thank God, because Madly had an admitted crush on Jackson for years, but I just didn’t get it. There didn’t seem to be anything there beyond physical attraction and as such he didn’t win me over. I got that Madly was in love/lust with the mer dude but I just didn’t care about him. Her feelings were also a tad repetitive. Then again, I’m not a huge fan of swoony romancey stuff (I’ve never seen the Notebook and don’t get me started on Twilight)and we only get a few pages to really learn about both of them
- Ended super abruptly. But kudos to Leighton, it does spur you onto the next book because you want to know what happens next, damnit!
All in all, this was a quick, fun and interesting read. There were a few detractors which hampered my enjoyment but I look forward to reading the next one in the series (yes, I just bought Book 2 and Book 3 comes out this month). I think more depth and length might do the characters and story better justice and I am very intrigued by this Wolfhardt character (I've always wanted to meet the big bad wolf).

flirty brat
Plot: A teaser of the whole series. It is about a mermaid princess brat who turns out to be the only hope of their underwater kingdom, against the Lores that escaped on their high security prison that would cause chaos on underwater and dry lands. But it was totally a cliffhanger, it ended when they are just trying to start to find the first Lore.
characters: I hate Princess Madly (I keep on reading it as My-lady). Pure Spoiled rebel flirty brat!
Want a description straight from the book: " I felt her fingers fist in the tails of my shirt, tails I’d purposely left hanging out over my cheesy blue plaid skirt.
Leaving my shirt untucked was my tribute to individuality among all the other uniform-clad students. “They” frowned upon it, but Jersey and I had decided two months ago that they could make us wear a uniform at Veritas Academy, but they could never make us all look the same."
Another thing she is a 18 year old princess but does not act like one, she is more like on 14's. Very immature. at 18 she already thinks of mating?! Ohh maybe that is the culture of the Mermaids (Mer for short). This teaser does not give hope that she would change as the story progress, very short to tell. If she would be changing I would give the whole series a chance.
As for Aidan, he would-soon-to-be Madly's fiancée. He is cool, I can see he is a calm one and would do anything for Madly. I feel pity for him though.
Jersey Madly's Best buddy, another character I don't do like. description? Here: "For Jersey, that meant wearing lots of costume jewelry and fingernail polish in every color of the rainbow" and add that she always chew a gum, duh! Very unlady like
Jesrsey and Madly reminds me of mean flirty girls that always wear thick make-ups, that are always bullying other simple girls.
Jackson Bro of Jersey. Childhood crush of Madly, a sentinel. A tough man. The story does not vividly describe his character, only his physical appearance.

Their history are what we, humans called fairy tales, (Cinderella, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty), that I think it would be the entire plot of the series, tracing the descendants of those fairy tale characters to hunt the Lores.
Okay, besides the character, it was fine. No big deals here. Would I read the second book? Maybe, but not soon.

Madly is my first Mermaid book. I can't say I loved it though. I think I would have liked it more if the book was longer therefore giving me more time to get less annoyed with Madly. I am use to the girl MC's being all lovey dovey really quick. Sometimes it doesn't bother me. It all depends on how it is written honestly.
Madly is the Princess of Atlas, at least I believe she is. The author didn't confirm it so I am just guessing since that is where she and her people are from. In her world mates are chosen for you and she will soon be betrothed to Aidan, one of her best friends. Unfortunately for Aidan, Madly feels nothing but brotherly love for him. She is hoping all that will change when the betrothed takes place in nine months. The author describes it as a 'mating tie to materialize'. Not really sure how that works. Anyways...while sitting in class Madly feels a burning sensation run up from her arm to her head leaving her in blinding pain. Jersey, her other bff, and Aidan come to aide her out of the classroom where Madly tells them she had a vision that something was wrong with Lady Sheelah, their handler acting as their Resident Advisor of their dorm. I won't go in to saying what happens, I don't want to give out anything. But after this we soon meet Jackson. He is a tall dark drink of water that Madly is desperately wanting to gulp up. A joint review for book one and two together. May contain spoilers.
I was looking for a short read and can across Madly on Amazon. I first noticed the amazing book cover and then I read the blurb and I instantly sold. Now let me just say Madly completely surprised me and had me captivated from start to finish. I loved it! And of course, I went straight on to read book two, Wolfhardt and loved it even more.
Who would have thought mermaids and werewolves could work? Well it did and I fell in love with M Leighton’s work from page one. I instantly liked Madly and connected with her as a character quite easily. I found her fun, strong and just an all-round awesome character to read about. It was very easy to slip into her head and go through her motions and understand why she loved the people she did in her life. Everyone around her is supportive and trust worthy, but not just because she is a princess but because she has genuine friends that love and care her so it was nice to see she had that support system even when her parents are held captivate.
The story itself was intense, action packed and dangerous. I loved finding out about Madly’s world under the sea and what her life is like above ground but most of all, I loved finding out about Jackson. *Sigh* Jackson! He literally took my breath away, but of course with Madly being a Princess and Jackson being of a lower status; a sentinel who trains and protects Atlas, it’s forbidden for them to ever be together. There love however does shine through and they have several heart-warming moment together and boy I WANT MORE!! I love Jackson and I think any fans of Jennifer L.Armentrout’s Covenant series will love Madly’s world just as much as me.
Overall, I’m extremely glad I picked up this series and I cannot wait to continue with book three once it’s been released.

My reviews are going to be short and sweet today. Madly by M. Leighton was really more of a short story than a novel. It pretty much served to introduce the character and conflict and then end in the hopes that readers will go get the next book.
I'm not entirely sure how I felt about this one. While reading it, I was a bit annoyed with the characters. Yes, they are teenagers which makes them immature, but Madly is either a total diva or clueless to the point of absurdity. And I couldn't help but think that Jackson, who is supposed to be a couple of years older, acted an awful lot like a teenaged girl. I was sure I would hate the book and was ready to give it a less-than-stellar review, but I will admit that once the conflict took off a bit, I was intrigued.
Basically ancients spirits are that have been locked away for centuries have escaped from their underwater prison and will now awaken their descendants to wreak havoc on the world. These spirits are only known to humans by the morphed way they've survived in fairy tales. So, the first one they're going after will be the spirit immortalized in the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale. I thought that was interesting.
I don't know if I'll pick up the next book. I'm not opposed to it, but I probably won't run right out and buy it either. The writing is good and the plot is intriguing. I loved Madly. SPOILERS FROM HERE ON IN:
And holy crap I fell in love with Jackson. I loved how Michelle balanced Madly's love interests, so they felt reasonable and real, instead of triangley. It all made sense of why Madly felt like she did, to who she did, and Michelle was extremely artful in building the romantic tension. She used fresh description and made Jackson a virile and strong lead, without being over the top and she made the love for Aiden sweet and real and a little heartbreaking too, when it became obvious that Jackson was the best man for the job!
BTW, one of my favorite parts was when Jackson tells her to get off his bed. It was unexpected and sexy, because I knew that's exactly where he really wanted her to be! I melted!
The pacing was smooth and perfect. I was pulled along, never bored and never skimmed (which, for me, is a badge of wild success to any author I'm reading). Jackson is sexy! The way he is written in this book has you drooling over him. I instantly fell for his character, and wish he would protect me. Dripping with appeal, Jackson is the kind of character I enjoy, when reading romance books

This novel is really short but the plot was interesting. We are introduced to the underwater kingdom of Atlas, where the Lores are being held as prisoners. When a few Lore prisoners escaped and Atlas was on lock down...Madly, a royal blooded Mermaid is expected to find the prisoners and bring them back to Atlas. Since Madly is not trained to trap Lore prisoners, a sentinel was assigned to assist and protect her, his name is Jackson. Apparently, Madly have a crush on Jackson when they were children! However, she tried to ignore it because he seemed like he was never interested at her and the fact the he's not from a royal family didn't help either. Madly is already betrothed to Aiden but her attraction to Jackson is resurfacing. Can she keep her attraction to Jackson buried now that they are working closely in saving Atlas and Madly's family?
Likes: I find the story unique, it's so different from YA books that I usually pick. I would also like to get to know more about the characters in the next book since they are very interesting individuals.
Dislikes: Predictable love triangle story...someone is bound to get hurt in the end, but it wouldn't be Jackson. So, Aiden, go find yourself a different bride, okay? LOL.
This book is recommended to readers who enjoy a good fairytale retelling. =)

WONDERFUL!!!!!
This book was so refreshing and different from most of the YA books (stories)out there. Such amazing writing!!! Hats off to Ms. M. Leighton!! This story puts you in the middle of an underwater world gone chaotic to a world in the woods with wolves! A beautiful love story between a princess and her protector. Forbidden love and a friendship with the one you have been promised to. Decisions that will save some but at the destruction of others. A young princess tries to do whats right, save her parents, save her entire nation, combined with struggles with her soul, her true love, and best friends. An emotional ride from page to page. This story will make you hold your breath, cry, scream out loud, and have your blood pumping...all on the same page. I truly love this book as well as I do ANYTHING from this author. At 1st I thought eh...Not my usual kind of story but I'll give it a try. WOW! SOOOOOOOO glad I did. AMAZING, REFRESHING, FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK!!!!! Bravo! I cannot wait to read the next one. Her Blool of Poison series is still my all time favorite but this one....definately ranks top 5! YAY. BRAVO M. Leighton. you soooo rocked it.

I am a terrible person. We all know I adore any and all M. Leighton books, so why it took me so long to start this series I will never know. This novella was so much fun and has me ready to dive into the rest of the series. I’ve never read a mermaid book before, but if there are others like this, I need to fix that.
Madly is a fun character. The kind of character that doesn’t like to take no for an answer, has no problem breaking rules, but isn’t reckless to the point where she makes you crazy. I definitely took a liking to her immediately. Then we have Jackson. And HELLLLOOOOOO Jackson. I can already tell that I am going to really really really like Jackson. He is just the right mix of delicious and badass… aka my kind of character. So I can’t wait for more of him.

I feel ripped off! This is not a book, it's not a "novelette", its literally a fourth of a story- more like the portion of a book that you'd get as a free sample. The "end" is by no means an ending, it's not even a cliffhanger...the story just stops BEFORE the climax!
Now besides the pathetic pitch to get readers to buy more of her work, the "book" was actually decent. A few characters felt flat, but overall the writing was good. I like the fact that it is about mermaids, a paranormal population that is not uber popular at this time. The inclusion of well known fairy tales was cute and worked without being annoying. I was also eager to watch the relationship of the "star crossed lovers" develop. But, I will not pay for bits and pieces of the same story multiple times... So I will not purchase book two and find out where things go.

This isnt really a review because i haven't finished the book. Actually, I've barely started. Im on chapter 3? I dont even know! I gave up. I cannot read anymore. I despise everythig about this book! I dont know how it has 3-5 stars! I want to give it -5. It is intolerable! So far i hate the characters, the writing isn't very good, and the general idea is kind of weird (although i am not opposed to reading about mermaids). Just thought i'd put my opinion out there, so don't hate me for it.

This novelette is a quick read & it definitely caught my attention! I haven't read a lot of books about mermaids, but this is going to be awesome I'm sure. Plus I really want to see what is going to happen as far as the plot & of course what will happen with Jackson. Madly & Jackson are intriguing, that's all I'm going to say :)

So this novella is the first installment of the Madly series and i got to say it got me interested to check out the rest of the books. I think it was the first time i read a mermaid story (at least that i can remember) and well, of course so far we get glimpses of the world and of the crisis is going on.
Now i must add that the description of Jackson is amazing *sigh* Well, i'm just saying :D

Voor het eerste deel van een serie is het boek wel heel erg kort, 57 pagina's namelijk. Dat zou ik dan eerder deel 0,5 noemen. Daarnaast is het boek ook niet bepaald onmisbaar voor de serie. Je maakt kennis met de verhaallijn en de verschillende personages, maar dat is het ook. Hopelijk is het volgende deel beter.

A mermaid on the run from a werewolf. Call it a simple thought but why doesn't she just like, oh I don't know, jump in the water?
Putting the lack of logic aside, this wasn't bad.
Not sure if I'll read part two because I'm guessing she'll finally work out to jump in the water and it'll be problem solved. Unless of course the werewolf swims....
