Calculated Risk

"Lady, I want you to stop seducing my son! Hell, what are you, thirty-two, thirty-four, Rob is seventeen..there's room for a whole other person!" Thus in one of Nashville's poshest restaurants began a stream of threats against Stephanie Brandt along with a heavy hand 'mangling' her shoulder, followed by a bill shoved into the middle of her quiche by a big man wearing work boots, denim and a T-shirt with an obscene foreign word printed on it. Until Quintin Ward stormed into her life with his threats and accusations, Stevie had not known his son Rob even existed., let alone was her mail room clerk. When she's finally able to convince Quintin that she has no designs on his son, they embark on a campaign to squelch Rob's amorous ideas and fantasy love-life with his boss. But their very calculated risk backfires! _________________________________________________________________ Stevie struggled out of the rust-spangled red VW amid a chorus of gleeful goodnights and used the last of her energy to wave. The twenty-six steps to her front door were the most painful she had ever taken. The last ten were finished walking on the heels of her boots. Quintin had the door opened before she even rang the bell. “I was peeking out the front window; it looks like you were well chaperoned.” “Eight.” She waddled past him into the foyer. “Eight people in that little car.” Stevie motioned for him to help her out of the raccoon vest. “I got to sit between the two front seats, wedged behind the stick shift and on the lap of a kid who kept belching.” She piled a seemingly endless number of black-ringed fur tails on the foyer’s glass and chrome console. “I’ve got to sit down and take off these boots. In the middle of the second half my toes went numb.” She bent over and pressed her fingers into the leather. “They’re dead, Quint, or at the very least gangrenous.” “Stevie, you can’t sit down.” His words sounded strangled. “Why not?” “You’ve got…uh…a big wad of pink bubble gum on the seat of your pants.” “Quintin, please …” she begged, and looked between her legs at his upside-down image. “Please tell me you are joking.” He stared at the gooey mound that was a conspicuous pink ornament on the green suede. “I’m sorry.” She rested her head against the stucco wall. “These pants are brand new. They cost a fortune.” He brushed back an auburn wave that curtained her face. “Let me have an ice cube and a butter knife and I’ll make them good as new,” he promised, “but first let’s get rid of those boots.” Straddling each leg in turn, he forcefully but carefully eased off the pointed vamp of the garishly designed footwear. “These damn things are obscene.” “I thought so.” She moaned in relief. “Rob thought they were ‘like totally total,’” she mimicked, “and one of his friends, Jack, the kid wearing the camouflage coordinates, told me I was ‘like tubular.’ Tubular!” A hiss was issued between clenched teeth. _________________________________________________________________ Copyright 2011 Elaine Raco Chase Updated, expanded, over fifty pages of new scenes and explicit sensuality for previous print-published bestseller ________________________________________________________________ Enjoy Excerpts from these eBooks - Special Delivery, Lady Be Bad, Video Vixen, Double Occupancy, Designing Woman, Dare The Devil, Rules of the Game, and Caught in a Trap.

This was funny and entertaining. Quintin accuses Stevie of having a relationship with his son, a teenage employee that she barely knows. Rob, the teen in question, has a huge crush on his boss and Dad hatches a plot to make his son sick of her. Of course Dad and the boss end up falling in love in the process. Neither wants to hurt Rob. They both have visions of teen suicide and runaways and are afraid their relationship will push him over the edge, so they sneak around behind his back. Sort of a silly plot, but it is funny. Stevie's dates with Rob are hilarious. The narrator does a great job with it. Very enjoyable.

Let me preface this by saying that I LOVE anything that deals with music. This is the first book that I have read that deals with the producing/management side of it. This book was HOT! I absolutely loved the plot of it being tied up between a 17 year old boy and his father. I loved the fear, the sadness, the love, the compassion that this book showed. Elaine Raco Chase is such an amazing author and comes up with the best stories ever! I love how this book has the steamy scenes in it that do not go too far over the top. Such an amazing read!!

This book was pretty weird for me. I havent read any books where there is a teenager who is in love with an adult woman. And then that woman ends up in love with his father? Like what? It just didnt seem like a traditional romance book. Stephanie and Quintin come up with the worst ideas on how to get Rob to get over his boss. But anyone can tell that is not going to work haha I wish I had more to say about this book. It didnt have anything that really grabbed my attention either. Quintin did come off as a great dad who, even though he was a young father, stood up and raised Rob as a single dad holding off on his wants and needs to ensure his son had everything.

AudioBook Review
Stars: Overall 4 Narration 4 Story 4

I love improbable and fantastical premises in romance: the ability to dive into another person’s life and experiences with situations that I would never encounter in my quiet little life. Even more interesting and enjoyable for me are the stories that take an almost credible situation, and spin it into a story that is engaging, well told and has moments of laugh out loud humor. Elaine Raco Chase has managed to check off all those little boxes in this story, cleverly narrated by Sheila Book.

Stephanie (Stevie) is a woman who worked diligently to make it in the boy’s club world of Nashville Music producing. A mailroom intern, lost in the throes of his first major crush has brought his father to confronting her about her lascivious intentions. While Stevie is understandably distraught at the negative attention, she also is aware that this is a phase for the boy, if only the father will see that.

A cockeyed plan is hatched to break the teen’s crush…yet all is never quite that simple. More suited to the father than the teen son, Stevie’s thoughts and attraction is turned to the father, electricity is clearly defined and the steam rampant in the latter half of the story.

Sheila Book is the narrative voice in this story, and she manages to incorporate small tempo and pacing changes with minor pitch inflections to narrate the story. Additionally, interior monologues are treated with an ‘open room echo effect’ that distinguishes the perspective. I’m slightly torn about the technique, it took several instances for it not to become a jarring change in the listen, but once acclimated the distinction was clear and felt more natural.

I’ve repeatedly asserted that Chase writes a fabulous dialogue that is loaded with witty repartee, clever comebacks and feels completely natural. There is no lack of that skill in this story, with dialogue that ping-pomgs back and forth between the speakers, incorporating snarky and smart responses, double entendre and several moments for processing for both parties.

These are purely fun and light romances that are heavy on description and scene establishment, solid character building and sexual tension and engagement that adds steam and substance to a very enjoyable listen.

I received an AudioBook from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I am waffling between 3-4 stars on this one. I don’t think I would read it again, but I don’t think I will forget it either. In this story you have Robbie/Bobby, a 17 year old mail gopher who works for the attractive 30 year old heroine Stephanie(Stevie) who runs a successful business managing recording artists and musicians. The business was run by her father who had groomed her to be his successor. She worked hard to take over the position and works even harder to stay on top. So when she is accosted during her dinner at a restaurant by an attractive, yet irate construction worker, she is thrown for a loop.

Quintin Ward verbally assaults the h and her Mrs. Robinson ways. He tells her to stop messing with his 17 year old son Robbie or he will be pressing charges. Then he dumps a florist bill in her quiche totaling a 100 dollars for all the flowers his son has been sending her and tells her he won’t pay that! Then he stalks off, leaving her with cold quiche and embarrassment.

And here we go, that was just the first few pages of chapter 1, so it basically hooked me right then. I mean who doesn’t like a good enemies to lovers situation.

So here is the scoop…the h has no idea who this Bobbie is. She has her pa research it and finds out that he works in her mail room and delivers mail. Now Stevie is very outgoing with her staff. Being in the record business, she is inundated with free merchandise and party invites. During this time she has tossed some freebies to the young teen….along with many other people who work for her. Now she is a successful business woman and isn’t about to let her reputation get tarnished by a misinformed single dad. So she sets off to his house where he is having a get together to celebrate the completion of his home as he is a hands on architect. Robbie thinks she is there because he left an invite for her(she never saw invite) and he starts taking her on a house tour much to the father’s dissatisfaction. When he shows off his room he gets handsy with the h and tries to get in a kiss. He gets her cheek and she is toppled onto the bed when the H arrives. He insists she leave. Instead she cancels her outing to set the hero straight.

Now he is forced to listen and when he brings up the kiss upstairs she shows him what a kiss from her is really like. Needless to say these 2 are hit with lightening with that kiss. She leaves in a huff making Robbie suspicious that his father has caused her abrupt absence. He warns his father that he will not tolerate any intrusion from him or else he will leave. This worries the father. He seeks out the h at her home later that night. She lets him in because he looks beaten down. He starts on more insults and jumping to conclusions then says a coffee sounds good. She can’t believe this man actually thinks she is willing to serve him a coffee. She gives him a dollar and tells him to go to the local coffee shop. Then she proceeds to tell him exactly what she thinks and gives him a good talking down. He leaves. Shows up again later, more apologetic. He asks for her help in thwarting his son’s advances without the son realizing what is happening. She agrees to the “calculated risk” and then the hero proceeds to show her how he kisses, curling her toes in the process!

On my personal Richter scale of one to ten"—Quintin's voice deepened; his eyes concentrated on Stevie's half-parted lips—"you registered a twenty. And this is so you'll know what I call a kiss."

The rest of the story consists of the h and H trying to use some reverse psychology on Robbie while starting up their own affair. Funny times ensue as the h tries to fit into Robbies Ms. Pac-Man, sprout eating, basketball game world as his “date”. When that doesn’t seem to be working she includes the kid into her own “adult” boring world. It still seems to be a bust. The H tells her to show the seedier side of the music biz, but she can’t go through with it as she doesn’t enjoy that side of the biz either.

Eventually, the h tells the H that she is going to avoid running into the kid at work. She has to go to a music show in Hollywood and decides she will extend it to make the heart of the kid forget. She tells the H that she doesn’t want Robbie hurt or for his relationship with Robbie to be hurt so she thinks it is best that they cool their relationship as well. The H is in love with her and this doesn’t seem like a very good option.

Eventually/quickly, things work out as Robbie finds a girl his age with similar interests. The H rushes to the airport to be with the h and the story ends with promises of marriage, expanding the family, and a trip to the plane’s bathroom for some mile high club action.

Overall this was a very passionate story, which ERC is pretty good at writing. She also infuses some funny times and good secondary characters. It was almost like a insta-love as they were in love soon after the initial misconceptions were cleared up. Each of them professing to the other that they spend their waking hours thinking of each other. The h had previously been burned in love by someone who was using her. The H’s own prejudice against the h had to do with Robbie’s mom. IT seems Robbies mom was the H’s Mrs. Robinson who ended up wrecking his relationship with his parents and then leaving shortly after Robbie was born. So, one can see that Robbie was probably attracted to the h as he had mommy issues.

The plot line of a grown woman dating a minor to "teach him a lesson" hasn't aged well at all and the rest of this romance is formulaic and dull. The idea of a woman falling in love with a man who never misses an opportunity to tell her how much he loathes her and her lifestyle didn't appeal.

Did not finish. Just couldn't stand it.

~~WARNING: Spoiler!~~

The H is both a tough guy and a softy softie. In one moment he is shouting and yelling, not willing to listen to the h and in the next, he is running to her door, almost crying about something is teenage son said to him, still angry at her for what she supposedly did at the same time, but thinking she is the only one who can help him. BIIIIIG "????"
They come up with these plans to make the son fall out of love with Stevie, but they don't work. The h can't go through with one particular plan and instead of telling the H so, she goes into "hiding" - not answering her phone, mobile or the door, just sitting in a rocking chair behaving like a lunatic! Total logical, I do this all the time^^ The H barges in asking for an explanation, they argue and then end up declaring their love for each other and...well, at this time I decided to not waste my time anymore, even though there was a love scene coming up. Me putting down a book right before a love scene says pretty much how bad this book is.
Another thing: The author is obsessed with colours. I've never ever read a book with so many colours. I mean, if you describe a person, or a room, or a landscape, of course you would expect colours with the description. Or if an emotion changes the eye colour, you would mention that. But this here!? Every second time the h's eyes came up, they're described as hazel. After the fourth time I was like, "OK, I get it, she has hazel eyes." The same with her auburn hair^^ . Next: - mauve lips, mauve nail polish. Red or pink, ok. But mauve? That colour is so exotic to me, it put me out of the flow of the story. But we are not finished: "taupe shadowed eyelids", "ivory-tinted makeup base". I had to look up what taupe looks like, so again a break. "Bisque-colored polish" - I'm sorry, what?? Are you sure that is a colour??
I've read about half of the story and counted 35 in my opinion different colours. Right, 35! You don't believe me? Amber, auburn, beige, bisque, black, blue, bronze, brown, burgundy, camel, chestnut, cinnamon, copper, gold, gray, green, hazel, ivory, magenta, mauve, navy, peach, pink, plum, poppy-red, red, red-gold, rose, rust-sprangled red, sand, taupe, tawny, titian, yellow, white.

Wow.. This story was just obsurd lol I've never rolled my eyes so much or skipped over details just to get to through the dialog so I could get to the end.. I'm one of those people that just cant NOT finish a book (no matter how bad it is) so I was racing to the end. There is just so much wrong with this story I wouldn't even know where to start. I really just dont want to spend the time pointing them out. I mean it's free so that's a plus. I'm also not one to complain about typos because hey - no ones perfect- and it usually doesn't interupt the story for me. Most of the time I never really notice.. but a line like, 'she put her hand over his clenched fish'.. well that really broke up a serious moment with much laughter. lol

It wasn't a bad book. But I felt like I was watching a train wreck. 2 adults hatching horrible plans to deceive his son. I was so worried about the kid finding out! But still, it was cute, the relationship was hot, and they fell in love quickly. E-book was done at 75%. The rest was previews.
