If you are the parent of a transgender teen, this book will help you understand what your child is feeling and experiencing. Irwin Krieger is a clinical social worker with many years of experience helping transgender teens. This book brings you the insights gained from his work with these teenagers and their families. According to the author, “Today’s teens have access to a wealth of information on the internet. Teenagers who are wondering about gender identity soon find out what it means to be transgender or transsexual. Parents, on the other hand, know little about this topic. When a teenager declares he or she is transgender, parents fear that their child is confused and is choosing a life fraught with danger. I wrote this book to help parents of transgender teens gain an understanding of this complex subject.” "Helping Your Transgender Teen" begins with the basic information you and your family need. The central chapters of the book address the fears and concerns most parents of transgender teens share. The final chapters guide you through the steps you can take to discover what is best for your child. Although written for parents, this book is also useful for pediatricians, therapists, educators and others who work with teenagers and young adults. "Helping Your Transgender Teen" provides answers to many of your questions about adolescent gender identity.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This slender book is an invaluable resource for parents, and for anyone with a transgender youth in their life. With an excellent listing of resources, frank talk about transgender and especially non-binary gender identification, this book can help guide caring individuals. It conveys a sense of how vital support is in the life of transgender youth, a group who have a high rate of suicide when lacking supportive family and friends in their lives. The book pragmatically explains what gender identity is and why it is one of the most fundamental parts of an individual.
This is a valuable book for parents dealing with trans teens. I never got to be a trans teen (unless you count a couple of years as a teen-adult) But all the information of this book is things that I am trying to get my parents to understand. It is valuable, yes I repeated that, for parents to know that their ten is normal and can live a happy life as a transgender person.
A quick read, a good starting point. Helpful if sometimes basic information, and some lists of further resources. Looking forward to sharing with other family members to offer some info and advice. Appreciate the focus on being supportive of your teen.
This book was very helpful in opening my eyes to how my teen feels and how I can help. This is defiantly a book for a confused parent. You will be able to have meaningful conversations with your teen, and if they're like mine, they will feel very grateful with your decision to learn more about them. Also, at the end of the book there are many helpful websites and places to get help.
An excellent first go-to resource for parents and caregivers of a gender questioning and transgender teens. It will undoubtedly not be the only book or resource you'll want to use, but it's a well-written and clear handbook on how to support and relate to your teen child.
Good starting point for parents with very limited information on transgender people, and provides well explained examples and steps to supporting the transgender teen in their lives. Included in the back of the book are several helpful resources for parents to continue learning
