This books is about how Shobhaa De felt on turning 60, and how she built a positive outlook to her age. The start is good – with Shobhaa writing about how turning 60 felt uncomfortable – after it is the doorstep to old age. She then goes on write about how she built a positive attitude to age – be it being busy with her profession, family relationship, diet or her fitness regime.

The problem is that, though the book starts well, it goes into a very preachy tone in the middle and later sections. It would have been fine, had it been only about attitudes and behaviors. However, there are elaborate sections on diet and fitness as well. While the advice may still be valuable, there are better sources for reading about these topics. It would have been better had there been more discussions on her personal experiences – be it with people she dealt with professionally, family or friends.

I used to find Shobhaa’s fiction books to be good to relax with. This book, however, was a disappointment. It somehow comes across as a book written in a hurry.

When I travelled to India for work years ago, I'd purchase several books from the bestseller lists there, with an eye towards getting a different perspective on the country than what I got from my team in Bangalore. Shobhaa at Sixty was one of those titles. It was a disappointment.

This 'book' is a lite romp through Ms. De's current life including her diet, exercise regimen and other topics. To get a sense of this title, here is the first sentence from several chapters......

Chapter Two - Spirit and Spirituality "I have to admit I was never a religious person, but I like my daily rituals. I strongly believe in the power of prayer, and I pray selfishly when I need something."

Chapter Three - The Basics - Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that I started modeling at an early age - I was only seventeen. Even though modeling in those days was not as organized as it is today, it still required a certain level of discipline.

Interspersed throughout are koans like "If you can afford the luxury of a long soak in the bath tub, with an array of bath salts to choose from, nothing like it."

Sigh. Somebody paid to publish this.

Let's not confuse between this book and Shobha De's fiction. I haven't resd any of the latter. But I respect her for how she has maintained her health and energy levels through her sixties. And was curious to read her experience and insights as I move into the mid forties.

Nothing earth-shattering, but her writing here is authentic, individual and dare I say, wise. She is old school in the matters of this book (health, diet, exercise etc) and that's what I prefer over the neo-nonsense that abounds in the form of fads. Read on if you share the perspective. You won't miss much either if you don't.

Shobhaa De writes about keeping oneself fit and how to cope up mental anxieties after sixty. Specifically written for women but even appealing to men also. Some really good tips explained on how to deal with aging women physical issues , dealing with finances, losing partner etc.. overall very good book for those on wondering how to go about life after sixty.

Why would you scoff at someone showing off her knowledge just because she does not have a great image in public? We could still respect her for the things she knows and the fact that she wants to share. I found everything she's said in the book extremely relevant and useful in the longer run. A great, brief read.

if you're a fan of shobhaa's fiction, this is the absolute worst book you can pick up. this is a general advice for old people book, and might be a useful one then, but the "getting it right at any age" part is mostly clever copy to sell more books.
