I really enjoyed the first in this series, Everlasting, but just about gave up on this one. What is the deal in YA books where the guy treats the girl horribly for her own good? There is some reason why she shouldn't love him, so instead of treating her with respect and letting her make up her own mind, he is rude and tries to push her away. I loathe that aspect in storytelling, and this book had it in spades.

And then there's the love triangle. Oh, yay. The plot device authors use when they don't have enough brain power to come up with a story that will stand on its own. So with these two very big strikes against it, my enjoyment of The Eternal Sea was lessened quite a bit.

But then I remembered the books I read when I was a teen. I loved those Sunfire romances, where just about the whole plot was a girl choosing between two boys. So the problem is I'm not a teenager anymore (or an adult who would love to re-live my teenage years). It's not necessarily that the book itself is bad.

There are some interesting and unique elements here, and it's a quick, easy read. So all in all, not entirely a waste of a few hours. It's just definitely not on my list of best YA fantasy.

The Scoop:
When we left Camille, Oscar, Ira and Cassie's newly discovered brother Samuel they had found the mysterious stone of Umandu, brought Oscar back to life using it and killed off their nemesis in the search who also happened to be Samuel's father. What Camille and her co-horts didn't know is that Umandu is part of a set of stones that needed to be united (reunited?) to work properly in their magic of bringing somebody back to life. Not having the two stones meant that Oscar's soul was never returned to his body and therefore he wasn't yet, technically, alive. Camille is determined to travel to the bowels of the neverworld to get the stone and complete Oscar's reanimation. Along the way she must sort out her feelings for him and her "former" fiance Randall, determine where her brother's loyalties lay and try to locate loyal Ira who was abducted by the supernatural creatures trying to stop her in her quest.

My Thoughts:
Ok, seriously, what is it about book series that have some sort of romance aspect that will have the main characters have some sort of stupid falling out in the middle book of the trilogy. Gah! I'm all for a good love triangle when we don't quite know what is in our main character's heart. However, it's very annoying and frustrating when we followed two characters through an entire previous book where they battled and overcame and ultimately decided that they were soulmates. I mean, hello? She chose to bring Oscar back from the dead rather than her father. Her FATHER! The person that loved and cared for her her entire life! And then we come to the second book and just because Oscar is missing a little thing like his soul and can't shower emotions on Camille (and Randall can and will) doesn't mean that she should just switch allegiances. SHE CHOSE OSCAR OVER HER FATHER! That has to mean something in the grand scheme of trying to find a soul, right? Ok, so I admit, if I was looking at a future where I didn't have a soul or could be pulled into the Underworld by Domorious I might be a little hesitant to continue on a relationship with somebody but, still. Oscar and Camille worked together to get Umandu in the first place so a little thing like finding the sister stone and regaining his soul shouldn't be that much more difficult and become a relationship deal-breaker. Ok, I think I'm done with that.
But, really, besides that whole Randall or Oscar internal debate she has Camille is one of the best female characters. You'd think she'd be all hoity-toity and fancy-like because her father owned a shipping empire (of sorts) but no, she's all kick-ass and strong. I guess a lifetime of traveling on her father's ships made her a self-sufficient, take-no-prisoners type of gal. She had not trouble entering the bowels of hell to save her (supposedly) beloved Oscar's soul. She might have a moment of hesitation here or there but she doesn't let that, her brother's failing allegiance, the soulless cold-shoulder from Oscar, Maggie's uncertain guidance and other issues that crop up in her travels sway her from plowing forward in her mission. I really admired her spunk and fortitude.
Again, Angie Frazier took the reader on an interesting journey to a lesser explored book setting. In the first book we sailed the high seas to Australia and on this trip we set sail for Egypt (and the Underworld). And her way of weaving historical and fantasy aspects together in a subtle way made it a pleasure to read. Considering that the resolution between Camille, Oscar and Randall was left hanging a little bit I'm looking forward to what I assume is another book in the series.

**Review to be posted on blog 6/2/11.**

In a Sentence: The Eternal Sea, filled with adventure, romance, and suspense is an excellent follow-up to Frazier's debut YA novel.

My Thoughts

Angie Frazier is quickly becoming one of my favorite YA authors. In a literary world that has become somewhat over-saturated with the same old recycled characters and plot lines, Frazier's Everlasting series offers something fresh and new. I enjoyed The Eternal Sea just as much as I enjoyed her debut YA book, Everlasting. The characters are fabulous, and I really enjoyed the mix of historical fiction and fantasy.

Since I'm a character girl, I'll start there. Frazier has the ability to create loveable, realistic characters, and she doesn't hold back in The Eternal Sea. Camille is a strong heroine, but she's also human. She's brave and caring, but she's not infallible. She makes mistakes, but she's also able to recognize them and she tries hard to do better. What I like most about Camille is her unwavering love for her friends and her family and her persistence in spite of all the hardships she's faced. Furthermore, the secondary characters are also well-crafted. Randall and Oscar play the respective parts of the dashing, well-off gentleman and the passionate, dedicated sailor vying for Camille's affections. Lastly (and possibly my favorite character), is Ira, the young Australian con-man with a heart of gold. Because of certain circumstances that I won't reveal, we don't get to see as much of Ira as I'd like to in The Eternal Sea, but I still adored his character. He's sweet and loyal and a great friend to Camille, but he's not a love interest, which I find refreshing. After all, it's okay for girls to have male friends who they don't wind up head over heels in love with.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned this in my review of Everlasting, but I'm going to say it again now: Angie Frazier sure knows her stuff. It's obvious that both Everlasting and The Eternal Sea were extremely well-researched, and this adds in creating a rich and detailed backdrop for a wonderful story. I also love that she combined fantasy with historical elements. I feel like there aren't all that many YA authors who can pull this off successfully, but Frazier did an excellent job.

The Eternal Sea ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I'm extremely excited for the next book in the series to come out. If you haven't given this series a shot yet, I'd highly recommend doing so in the near future. Frazier has a lot of talent as a YA author, and I can't wait to see what else she comes up with!

SOME SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK!

Wow! The books in this series just seem to keep blowing me away. Everlasting became one of my TOP favorite books when I finished it just a week or so ago, and this sequel was definitely not a letdown. I continued to enjoy the characters and plotlines that Angie Frazier has invented.
To be honest though, I did enjoy the first book a bit more, but the main reason for that, I’m sure, is because the love between Oscar and Camille was more present than in The Eternal Sea. Do not get me wrong, it was still there in this book, but a lot more things were getting in the way this time. One of those things being Randall.
Randall, Camille’s somewhat fiancé that she left behind in the first book, appears at the very beginning of Eternal Sea when he shows up in Australia to find Camille. Relieved to find her unharmed and well, he wants to pick up right where they left off, having no idea that she has fallen in love with Oscar. (I mean, who wouldn’t fall in love with Oscar after spending months and months with the man! Have you MET Oscar?)
Oscar on the other hand, after having been brought back to life by Camille and the stone, does not seem to be as enthusiastic about pursuing a relationship with Camille as he had been. (yes, I may be totally in love with Oscar’s character, but UGH he can totally frustrate me) Because of some understandable, yet heart wrenching reasons, he begins pushing her away and trying to convince her that he does not, after all, love her. (*cough*total lie*cough*)
Camille, hurt and confused by Oscar’s rejection and Randall’s unfailing devotion, spends the length of the book being torn between the two men. (though I really don’t understand why. Randall is nice and can be very sweet and all, but Oscar has all the hotness and angst going on and COME ON she sacrificed SO MUCH for him)
Other complications, complications that don’t exactly have to do with the men, arise in Camille’s life as she sets off after the second stone needed to restore Oscar’s soul. She soon finds herself unsure of whom she can trust, especially after Ira disappears into the unknown (much to my dismay, because I absolutely adore Ira’s character and really missed his presence for a good part of the book) and her newly found brother repeatedly betrays her trust in favor of the young and convincing Captain Starbuck (the Samuel/Starbuck relationship really confused me, but yeah…).
As they near the end of the journey, things begin to erupt as all of the characters seem to be at odds for many different reasons. Things are only intensified when they reach the underworld to retrieve the second stone. Untrusting (and very cowardly at this point) Captain Starbuck sends Camille, Oscar, and (after much hesitation) Samuel to bring back the stone, even if it means that they won’t all return with their lives. (I don’t know why Angie Frazier insists on putting my favorite character’s life in question at the end of each book, but as long as it all works out, I’ll be okay)
Unlike Everlasting, The Eternal Sea ends with much more of a cliffhanger. You’re left wondering about who has survived and who has not and how the heck everything is going to work out. But I guess we’ll just have to wait (the very long amount of time) until the next book comes out. I, for one, am SUPER excited! This series is a very refreshing change from other series’ that I’ve read in this genre. It’s new and inventive and I highly recommend it!

Review Overview:

Romance, fantasy, historical, and adventure all packed into one novel
Starts off with a bang
Delicious romance
Fantastic sequel that will not disappoint fans of Everlasting

Note: I read an insanely early version of this novel.

This is the last book that I got to read for the lovely editor I worked with at Scholastic before the end of my internship. I also read Everlasting during this internship, which I absolutely adored so I jumped at the chance when my editor offered me to read it. At the time, THE ETERNAL SEA was known to me and Angie as #thebookwithoutaname because it was only known as Everlasting #2 while Angie and the editors tried to come up with a title.

I love Everlasting and THE ETERNAL SEA because it combines so many different genres that I enjoy. THE ETERNAL SEA definitely packs romance, fantasy, historical, and adventure all into one novel. Everything was escalated in the sequel! It had been a while since I read Everlasting, but THE ETERNAL SEA does a great job in catching up where the story left of. It can be read by itself, if one truly wishes, but I think you’ll miss out on the build-up to the foundation of Camille and Oscar’s relationship – an important thing to understand when reading the sequel. THE ETERNAL SEA started out with a bang and kept it going all the way through. The novel is fast-paced and I couldn’t put it down. The magic in this book, in my opinion, is elevated onto a whole new level. It is a lot more complex and we, as readers, learn more about the story behind the stones.

I think the best part of this book is the love triangle that emerges. I am 100% Team Oscar, but the drama between Oscar, Randall, and Camille was just too delicious. Camille definitely gets her share of attention in this book. The frustration jumps right of the page to the point where I want to rip my hair out and scream, “WHY?!” I love the chemistry between Oscar and Camille. It’s definitely one of the top reasons why I love the book.

To me, the book will always be known as Eventide. It was one of the title suggestions that Angie gave her editor, which I absolutely loved. THE ETERNAL SEA won out in the end – which is still a pretty good name. I give THE ETERNAL SEA a rating of four stars. I truly enjoyed the book, but I hated how the ending left me hanging with a bittersweet feeling. (Can’t say more… wouldn’t want spoilers!)

4.5 stars

The Eternal Sea is a fantastic sequel to Angie's debut Everlasting. I was completely surprised with how quickly I was taken right back into the story. There's more danger, deceit and a well written love triangle that left me just as confused as Camille.

The Eternal Sea picks up right where Everlasting ends. I liked that this story has more of a edge to it and it's a little bit darker than Everlasting. There's a darker side to the legend surrounding the stones that's revealed, and Camille begins to understand that her actions at the end of Everlasting have serious consequences. Within the few pages Angie thrust me right back into Camille's world, as she struggles with her feelings for Oscar, and why he's acting so strange and to make matters more confusing, Randall arrives. That's just the beginning of Camille's adventures.

The characters are just as fabulous as they were in Everlasting. I thought Angie did a great job at showing Camille's inner struggle from her guilt, her keeping things from Randall, and her struggles with her decisions and her feelings for Oscar and Randall. She became more relatable to me. Randall and Oscar were two characters that I felt torn between, though I'll admit I really loved Randall this time around. His character has grown the most for me, and become more in-depth. I felt that all three characters had so much to endure that allowed me to understand them more on some level.

There are many things I love about this series. The unique paranormal elements, the magic, the well written romance, the setting, the time period and of course the adventure on the high seas. There is a lot of action, danger and the suspense is one of the things that makes Angie's books so hard to put down. If you haven't already read Everlasting, I suggest reading it before you pick up The Eternal Sea. Just in time for your summer reading, I highly recommend picking up this fantastic historical fiction. On a side note, can I say how much I love the cover. This cover is a perfect fit for the story, with the illustrations and the coloring. It really sets the tone for the story.

Wow, what an unexpected sequel to Everlasting! Here I thought things couldn't get any more dangerous or confusing and I was wrong. In The Eternal Sea the danger takes on a whole new level and so does the romance. Now that Camille has Oscar back she thinks her destiny with the stones is over but that is not the case at all. Oscar is not the same anymore and her adventure with the stones is far from over. Not only that but Randall shows up to help and the reunion is unlike anything expected.

The Eternal Sea was just as adventurous and dangerous as Everlasting, if not more. This book was also a bit more dark and gloomy than book one. There is never a dull moment. There was times where I thought; "will this ever get better", not the book, but the story line. I just felt the characters needed a break, some joy in their crazy lives.

The characters are all just as great as in book one; they're realistic in their emotions as they deal with this new adventure at hand. I loved watching Camille struggle with guilt and growth; she is so easy to relate to because she is not perfect! My favorite character would have to be Randall though, watching him really come alive as a character in this book was great, there was so much more depth and compassion with him then we got to see in Everlasting. At times I was thinking of how much I hated Randall, and then other times I loved him. I felt the same way about Oscar; it was definitely a love/hate relationship going on.

The ending is surprising and full of suspense. Again, just like in Everlasting, once I started reading The Eternal Sea I simply couldn't put it down, I had to see what adventure Camille was going on now! I again highly recommend this book for those YA readers that love magic, adventure, and fantasy books.

I won this ARC copy from Goodreads First Reads and gave it my honest and personal opinion. I would not recommend this book if I didn't believe it to be a great book!

**My review may contain spoilerish moments during my ranting.**
Torn, torn, torn. I loved this book. I hated this book. There is no in between. This story picks up weeks after Everlasting ends. Camille thought she and Oscar would live happily ever after. SO not the case. Oscar is different. Obviously disturbed and bordering obsessive with finding the other stone and pushing Camille into Randall's arms. Camille goes willingly. Here are my loves.
The author knows how to tell a story. It comes alive and jumps off the pages and I have to look around my room to remind myself I'm not trapped in another world. The dialog is fantastic. It's emotional and funny at just the right times. The historical and paranormal/fantasy aspects were well developed and oh so cool. Now my hates. Camille is fickle. Fickle, fickle, fickle. How easily she flits from kissing one man to the other. Not once but often. When she catches Oscar in a compromising position she LOSES it! Tit for tat I always say... Randall shines in this installment and I cheered when he stepped it up. I became so disgusted with Camille I actually hoped that Oscar and Randall could ride off into the sunset together and leave her to think about how she acted. The last chapter set me over the top. For Camille to be so strong and brave for all of the previous book (and this one) and then the choice she makes (or doesn't make) in the end? Seriously? I guess the song says it right, "if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with".
*Several instances of taking the Lord's name in vain. A real turnoff.

Sadly this book was a dissapointment, it seemed as if Angie was trying to undo the love she built up in the first book Everlasting. The book consists of Camille understanding that Randall may be a good choice despite the fact that there is no sparks. I suppose i just hate sad endings.
Another reason for my dissapointment was that there was literally no action in the majority of the book, all the action was at the end of the book and had to be wrapped up pretty quickly as she left alot of threads hanging throughout the book.
Also literally none of the characters which you love from the first book are there such as Ira; that really caused some dissapointment as he added a slight comedy and lightheartedness to the book.
The only intresting factor in this book was Samuels secret, even theough it was not developed further. Domorius was also a dissapointment as they passed through the underworld relativly easily, so you did not really fear him. There was little description of his character, so was quite a dissapointment as you have heard so much about this keeper of the underworld.
The only reason tht i did not score this book any lower was because Angie continued to write well, especially the scenery. In some ways i wished it ended with Everlasting, but that is the danger of sequels.

I am so tempted to give this one star--I hate the ending!!!!! Hate it! The first book was awesome. This book teetered between awesome and frustrating--the awesome parts are the only thing saving this book from one star. And then it goes and ends . . . like THAT! I'm sorry, but what kind of author does that? Didn't anyone ever teach her how to end a book? And a sequel, no less?

Seriously! Read the first book, Everlasting, and then avoid this one. Or read it and quit at the end of chapter 28.

Oh, and where did this thing with Samuel and Starbuck come from? Huh? Maybe someone else wrote the last several chapters of the book. And it's almost as if it could continue (if Camille weren't so done with the stones)--there's suddenly new info in the last chapter .

Ugh! I'm just so angry! I'm not sure I've ever been this mad about a book before.

Note: Contains minimal language and a terrible ending. Read at your own risk.

I should give it 2 stars because really - 2/3 of the book is quite good. Then comes the last 1/3. I was entrigued - what was the author doing with all these characters? Where was the author going? What fabulous curve would wind into the ending scene? Well, the buck stopped there. What author gives a young heroin 2 loves of a life so one can conviently die and she doesn't have to choose? It was quite annoying that Camille actually had 3 young men falling all over her. 3 young men willing to die for her and quite frankly 3 really great young men that you want her to fall in love with. But conveniently one dies, and then one just keeps loving her but wanders off to possibly a new love, and the third, the wealthy, she gets to keep. Oh, I could go on, but I won't. Finally I'll just close by saying the homosexual twist at the end ruined it. Really? REALLY???

My Thoughts: How do I start this review? I honestly was very hesitate to read The Eternal Sea because I wasn't thrilled with Everlasting. It was alright but not a story I remember every little detail about. So, when I started this one, I wondered if I would have to reread Everlasting to know what was going on. But I didn't. I slowly remembered as I started the book.

We are back with Camille. I enjoyed her much more in this book. I felt like she had grown up finally and gotten some sense. She wasn't so naive and I felt her maturity a bit more.

The Eternal Sea is about what comes next. The story of what happens after she has gotten her hands on the stone that grants immortal life, the stone that can bring someone back to life.

Camille is with Oscar and they are trying to be happy but he is different now, always pulling away from her. She knows he's a bit different but she wants to look past that. Also, her old fiance Randall is back in the picture and he still loves and wants Camille.

Camille finds herself torn between the two men. Randall is a lot easier to like than Camille wants to admit.

Camille and her gang go on another trip across the sea to gather the other stone. She needs this other stone to truly free Oscar of what is troubling him.

Honestly, I didn't love Everlasting and I didn't love The Eternal Sea either. Like I've said before, I'm not into historical romance very much but I always try them anyways. Everlasting and The Eternal Sea are two of the better historical reads I've given a chance (even though they only get 3 cupcakes from me). I really did want to give this book 4 cupcakes but I didn't find myself liking it much more than Everlasting (which I also gave a 3).

Overall: It was alright and I liked it enough to finish it. I think fans of historical and sea adventures will love this book more than me.

Cover: It's an ok cover but I still prefer the Everlasting cover. Liked it much more.

What I'd Give It: 3/5 Cupcakes

In the end, Camille’s quest in this book seemed rather pointless to me. The book held my interest and I liked some aspects of it, but I was, overall, disappointed with the turn of events--especially at the end. A lot was really predictable to me and I kept wanting to shout at characters to stop being so stupid, trusting people they shouldn’t. Seemed like everyone except one person was just awful to Camille and I wasn’t sure what I thought about that person either--seemed too good to be true (and not as interesting or captivating as someone else!). Camille’s waffling and stupidity was fairly irritating most of the time.

I didn’t like how this book ended--seemed like a huge waste of time. I was quite invested in the romance from the first book, so was very irritated at a lot of what went on in this book. I didn’t like Maggie, hated Samuel, was frustrated with Oscar, liked but resented Randall, and was mad there wasn’t more Ira (since he was a true ally for Camille, not to mention the only comic relief and one of the most likeable characters in the book).

I’m assuming there’s another sequel in the works? Not sure I can take any more heartache… And now, regardless of where the story heads, I see nothing but heartache for somebody. Argh!! I’d love to get back to what I enjoyed and rooted for in the first book--without any corruptions, complications, or split feelings.

If you read my review of the first book you know that I really enjoyed the characters in that book, this book was no different! I liked delving back into this world and getting to know the characters even better, as well as meeting new ones!

The plot of this book was full of action and adventure, I was kept on my toes wondering what was going to happen next and how it was going to end. Even though most of the book takes place on a ship it wasn’t boring or mundane like it could have been.

I have two words for you, LOVE TRIANGLE. There was a definite love triangle in this book but I think it was done better than in many other books. Camille’s reasons for being torn were valid and I found myself switching back and forth with who she should be with. (OSCAR)

The only problem I had with this book was that I wish the mythology had been gone into more. While it was gone into more than in the first book I found myself craving even a little more.

Overall a good book and I hope there is going to be another book because I was not satisfied with that ending!

Oh, teenage girl romance angst. I enjoyed the first book in this series so much because of the adventures had by its resourceful protagonist. Camille does indeed have elements of Indiana Jones about her, & "Everlasting" was, to me, mainly an action-adventure set in a very interesting historical time & place with a flavor of romance to it. In this sequel, her teenage girl romance angst is much more prominent in the story line, & it got on my nerves a bit. Following his resurrection, main love interest Oscar is acting very distant indeed, & Camille is surprised to find fiancee Randall has come all the way to Australia to find her - & still more surprised to find that she might not be as disinterested in him as she first thought. Cue the "Oh no, both these gorgeous men are in love with me, what do I do? Which one do I really love?" agonizing. However, the story line about the stones that Camille has to find to get her life back to normal is still interesting, & the book winds up in a way that indicates a third will definitely be coming.

SPOILER ALERT!

"I really love this series. Everlasting was my favorite. The Eternal Sea was still an exhilerating read but...... how could she let Oscar die AGAIN! He finally gets his soul back and then POOF, 5 minutes later he's gone again. And to leave it off like that. Hopefully there is a 3rd book and Oscar better return because he is Camilles true love (NOT Randall, though I can understand why she is torn). There has to be a 3rd book! This series is hard to put down and as soon as I finished reading The Eternal Sea I hungered for more! Oh and one more thing. I missed Ira throughout the whole book. He is one of my favorite characters what with his wit and all. At least he returned!"

Adventure and suspense on the high seas as well as some very dark places fill the pages of this book. This one picks up where the earlier title left off, and Camille must follow her beloved Oscar to Egypt while he searches for the companion stone to the one she used to bring him back to life. Puzzled by his coldness, she still loves him and can't figure out what the problem is. Things are complicated when her fiance, Randall, joins them. The descriptions of the Underworld are wonderfully creepy, and Camille proves to be complex and determined even while she struggles with her attraction to both of her suitors. The beginning was a bit slow for me, but things picked up once they were aboard the ship.

I really liked the story in this book and was excited to enjoy some time with Camille on the high seas again, but it felt sooo slow through the whole middle part of the book and I had a hard time getting into it. But I enjoy Angie Frazier's writing and would definitely recommend this book to anyone who read and enjoyed Everlasting.

I liked this book...until Oscar died. Then I just stopped reading. Frig.

Oscar was my favourite character, so much better than Camille and the rest of them. So his untimely and highly unecessary death pissed my off, haha.

I'm waiting for him to come back to life.

Again.

What do you do when a book hurts you this much? When it tears your heart and forces you into a reading slump? When you finish the book, drop it onto the bed in shock, and stare at the wall for an hour trying to process how it could possibly be over? I’ll tell you what I did, went to GoodReads as soon as I was able to function in order to see the reactions of others and right my own thoughts. But unfortunately after trying for thirty minutes, and to no avail, I can’t capture how this absolute roller coaster of a book made me feel.

So I will just leave it at this: AMAZING storytelling, descriptions, just overall incredible job on the writing of this book. I cannot tell you how much this book consumed me. I finished it in one sitting immediately after finishing the first one. Angie Frazier, you have a true gift and I thank you for sharing your gift with the world. I am very sad that the only books I have been able to find by her are from over ten years ago.

Although I hated how it ended only because I am a hopelessly romantic hopeless romantic, I still loved the journey. And that’s all I will allow myself to say because I can’t put the rest into coherent words.

This was a great sequel. It added extra stakes and depth to the story. It felt like a true continuation of the story rather than filler or a bridge to the real adventure. I think this was originally supposed to be three books, but the third was never published. The ending is beautifully crafted. It is open-ended enough to leave room for a third installment. Yet, it was closed enough to be a complete ending on its own. I still hold out hope for that third book. There is a certain character we need to save!!

Some of this book was really great, and other parts seemed to have plot holes and unanswered questions. The ending didn’t seem like a good ending to me, whether it was a “happy ending” or not. I will say that I accidentally picked this book up not knowing it was the second of a series, but the author did a good job catching the reader up to speed.

By now, I’m hoping that you’ve read my gushing review of Angie Frazier’s first book Everlasting and have hopefully read the book yourself so as not to encounter any potential spoilers. And by now you will also have realised how much I LOVED Everlasting and how I read it in three hours and then immediately picked up the sequel. One of the good things about not reading a book on or near its publication date is that if you leave it long enough, then you don’t have the enduring wait for the sequel. So whilst I was kicking myself for not reading Everlasting sooner, I’m glad I didn’t have many months to think about the book until I got to read the next one. The Eternal Sea picks up where Everlasting leaves off. A world where Camille has chosen Oscar and he is living and breathing, a world where they are living in Camille’s mother’s house until they can figure out what to do next, a world where Oscar has gone a little weird and is doing what I like to call “an Edward”. What, pray tell I hear you ask is “an Edward?” Dear readers, I am referring to Edward Cullen in New Moon when he does the most idiotic thing a person can do and that is to tell the object of their affection that they don’t love them in order to protect them *head desk*. Never mind Oscar, I still love you even when you’re being a doofus. Basically, Camille and Oscar learn that the adventure is not over yet and just to make things a little interesting, guess who’s found his sea legs and ventured halfway across the world to make sure Camille is okay? Oh, hello Randall. Here’s the synopsis:

“Romance and adventure are just around the corner . . .

After the thrilling journey that led Camille through the dangerous discovery of love, secrets, and a magical stone that grants immortality, Camille has everything she wants. She's escaped the men who wanted her dead, and now she is ready to build a new life with Oscar, her one true love. But things are not to be so simple. Oscar is acting strangely, and before they can even board a ship from Australia back home, to San Francisco, Camille learns that the journey is not over. If she does not follow the magic of the curse of Umandu, her life and Oscar's could be in grave danger.”

This time around, they set sail for Egypt but do not be deceived, before they’ve even set off on the journey; the path is fraught with danger. We’re introduced to the likes of “couriers” who to put it mildly, aren’t very nice. And what about the sudden arrival of Randall, I hear you ask? Well, it’s only a matter of time before the shit hits the fan so to speak. And you know what? All in all, it turns out that beyond the riches and businesslike manner, he’s actually a decent guy once you get to know him and he truly loves Camille. And this is somewhat of a conundrum as I found myself torn (like Camille) between them both. Personally, I think Oscar has the edge but still! He may be acting a little weird, but he’s still fiercely protective of Camille and will not let her come to any harm even if it costs him dearly.

The Eternal Sea introduces us to some new characters besides couriers such as Captain Starbuck (was Angie drinking in a certain caffeine selling establishment when she thought of this I wonder) and Maggie, a stowaway onboard The Eclipse, a ship hired by Randall to take them on the next leg of their adventure. Everyone is connected to the stone in some way, some of which comes as a big surprise. In Everlasting, we were introduced to Camille’s half brother Samuel and in this book; we begin to get to know him better although I’m sure there’s still more to come.

I really enjoyed the fact that the story took us back to the ocean for a little while before resting in the bustling city of Cairo. I also enjoyed the mysterious dreams that overtook Camille on the journey and how they bled over into the real world. And let’s just say that having two guys fight over you? Two guys that you love? SWOON CENTRAL.

The Eternal Sea has somewhat of a devastating ending but I do not believe all is lost. I have faith that things will be okay and I’m hoping (read: desperate) to see that in the next part of the trilogy as Angie has definitely left things open for a third book. I just hope that the book gets written as I hear that Scholastic are not lined up to publish the third book. I do hope (read: beg) they reconsider.

I was actually surprised by how much I honestly enjoyed book one, Everlasting. I must say that this series continues to stun me as it continues. The Eternal Sea picks up there Everlasting left off. We see Camille go off on another journey that is packed with action, suspense, and even more romance.

A newer aspect of this story was the addition of a nice love triangle. Gotta love those! I really enjoyed getting the chance to learn about Randall. Although we know about him all along, this book really gives us a chance to understand him. He was not at all who I expected him to be. I will even admit that I went back and forth on who I liked best, him or Oscar. Shocking, but true! He was very well developed in the story and gave the book exactly what it needed. I enjoyed his interactions with Camille. It was obvious that he cared for her deeply.

The Eternal Sea takes us deeper into the legend that started Camille's journey. We also get a more in-depth look into her personality. I could relate to her and understand the difficulty of her decisions in this story. Her fighting spirit came forward and kicked butt! I loved it. I always enjoy a strong character and Camille is that and more. Sometimes I wasn't sure how she would continue but she always did.

This series has a fantastic list of characters; some new, some old, and some we don't see as often as we did in Everlasting. But they all bring so much to the plot. I did find that this book took me a little longer to get back into the story, but by the middle of the book I was completely hooked and couldn't put it down! I just had to know what was happening next and how the romance would heat up..and with who.

I am so excited for the next book! Angie has created a magical series with a complex plot, engaging characters, and a powerful heroine that will keep you at the edge of your seat!

Wow. There are no words. This sequel blew me away. Everyone here at BCM was already a huge fan of Angie's. We even featured her in our Best I've Read 2010 event that we hosted last year. Everlasting was without a doubt one of our favorite books of 2010, but this book -- The Eternal Sea -- is absolutely mind blowing. It's the sequel written to perfection. It's twists and turns at every corner. It's romance and peril and adventure on every single page. It's been over a week since I finished it and I'm still reeling from everything that took place. Angie Frazier is a brilliant new mind in young adult literature and has quickly become one of my favorite authors.

At the beginning of The Eternal Sea, the story picks up just shortly after it left off in Everlasting. Camille is still in Australia with Oscar, Ira and her newly found brother, Samuel. Her father is still dead and she's still grieving his death. Of course, Oscar isn't helping matters with his refusal to talk to Camille and his constant distance from her. She can't help but doubt her own heart's decision to choose Oscar. Did he truly love her as much as she had thought he did? Camille wasn't so sure anymore.

When Randall unexpectedly shows up and Oscar announces that his work with the stone is not yet finished, Camille has a tough decision to make. Should she go back home with her fiance and pretend nothing ever happened or should she follow the man she loves into Egypt, even if he no longer wants her?

I honestly don't want to say too much more about this sequel for the risk of spoiling anything. Let's just say it's a non-stop emotional ride that had me gripping the pages a little too tightly and yelling at the book more than once. The Eternal Sea is phenomenal. I am on pins and needles waiting for information about book three. There absolutely HAS to be one.

Like the first book, The Eternal Sea is MUCH better than it sounds like. I found that I couldn't stop reading it, which is weird for me when the book is mostly about a love triangle. So I have come up with three reasons why this might be possible:
1. Frazier is a good writer: Frazier is able to mix romance and adventure well, which is rare these days. She doesn't make me want to puke at the romance! Whoa! Also, I actually like that Camille understands that Randall is a good guy. Usually, you have the girl in love with the broody guy and she totally ignores the good guy. And although Oscar was the broody guy, the fact that he died at the end was a nice plot twist from the norm. Also can I mention that Randall was a sexy badass at times?? He kisses her, and she says to stop, and he looks at her like, I'm not even sorry. That just made me crack up.

2. I have finally accepted that stories about romance can be good reads: Although Twilight and Fallen kind of destroy this theory, I have read enough good romance books to *reluctantly* accept that I would actually enjoy a book where romance is a key component in the plot. However, there has to be a badass fight scene in there. I am not, nor will I ever be, a Nicholas Sparks girl.

3. I'm turning into a teenage girl: DARN YOU HORMONES!!! AHHHHHH why do I picture a man sweeping me off my feet, URGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

*deep breath, Erin*

Okay, moving on. There were a couple of things I didn't like. First, IRA WAS GONE. Why is it that during the sequel of my favorite books, my favorite character dies or disappears for some/most of the book??? Next, I still don't like that her dad was still not resurrected. I know that's one of the points of the novel, but it still was annoying to me.

Overall: 3.75 out of 5 stars

Cover: I like this better than the first cover, and the art is nice.

BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Angie Frazier, her books are the best!

REVIEW:
Um, WOW! That's basically all I can think after reading this book. That and a feeling of being heartbroken. I can't tell you why though.

Angie Frazier has done it again. She's written a book that I think might be the best ever. I loved being on this journey with our beautiful cast of characters. Frazier is seriously like my favorite author. I've read 2 of her previous books, and I've absolutely loved all of them. The Eternal Sea was no different.

Camille was just as amazing as ever. She was so human to me and I could easily relate to her. I felt her inner turmoils and was there right along side her the entire time. It was just plain great. Oscar, oh that boy just oozes wonderfulness. He and Camille, wow just wow! I don't want to spoil anything though so I won't say anymore. Or maybe I should say Camille and Randall? I do like Randall but Oscar is just my favorite. Yes, there is a love triangle. But it isn't annoying, it's actually quite amazing.

Ira!! He is SO funny. Other than the boys and Camille he is just plain awesome. SO funny! I don't know how many times I can say this but he is. And he likes making up nicknames for people too!!

And the plot the was riveting. I could not stop reading, it was just so good. There were so many twists and turns and new things happening. But it was easy to follow!

And the fantasy and historical aspects of The Eternal Sea were so well written, and just down right unique. I loved it. It makes it even more memorable.

I loved everything about The Eternal Sea, it was probably even better than Everlasting. I can't wait for the next book!

Rating: 5+++

I'm not entirely sure why I wanted to read this one. I wasn't overly impressed with the last quarter of so of Everlasting. But, I enjoyed the premise of the story and knew it wasn't over. Therefore, I decided to give this newest installment in the series a try. Since I didn't have my hopes up, it far exceeded my expectations.

Camille seems much more grown up in this book. She went through a lot in the first one, so I was expecting it. It just seemed like I enjoyed her character more. She's trying to figure out her place in life and were she really belongs. She has to do this without her father and mix in a long lost half brother. Too add to the confusion, Oscar is not acting like the person she feel in love with. In fact, he's pretty much ignoring her.

Turns out the stone isn't through with Oscar and Camille. You obviously can't get something for nothing and the stone wants payment for Oscar's life. I enjoyed the paranormal aspect more. Their journey leads them to Egypt and even the underworld. Along the way, we learn that not everybody is friend. And, sometimes the crew knows what more than they let on. Love can grow cold without a soul, and friends can become more than that without meaning to.

I loved were this book takes us. From aboard a ship crossing the Indian ocean, to a sand storm in the Egyptian desert, and the Underworld itself, this story has it all. It was a vast improvement over the first and I found myself reading it well into the night. It's dark and sinister as times, but also has hope and love. Now, I truly want to read the next in the series!

Compelling and suspenseful, The Eternal Sea is very well-written and engaging. I enjoyed the adventure. I was disappointed that there was little Ira in the story, but I did get a kick out of some of the new characters. Well, maybe not a kick out of them, but they definitely were interesting. Maggie, however, pissed me off. I was sure that she was trying to make a move on Oscar. I’m still not convinced that she isn’t attracted to him. And I wondered, who really is trustworthy? Is it Maggie? Or Captain Starbuck? (I love his name, too! LOL)

One thing I really liked was getting to know minor characters – or at least characters with less time in the center of the action – from Everlasting. Samuel had a bigger role, and it was interesting to watch his character develop. And Randall. It was really neat getting to know him better. What a really good guy! And Camille wouldn’t be unfortunate if she ended up with him.

This book is clearly not the end – at least it had better not be. There are too many unanswered questions. (I am going to refrain from listing them, as to avoid spoilers.) And, I have to be honest. I kinda hope the next book is the last. Don’t get me wrong. Both this and Everlasting were fantastic. I’m just tired of the despair. Tired of the hope, only to see it obliterated. I want the journey – and the curse at the center of it – to be over. And I want to see Camille and Oscar together.
