How Your Child Is Smart: A Life-Changing Approach to Learning

Rate this book
The groundbreaking guide for parents and teachers to identify and understand the different ways children learn.

Not all children learn in the same way. So why should they all be taught the same way? Some are verbal gymnasts while others are wandering wonderers; some need to be shown while others need to move. The first step to reaching and teaching each child is to understand his or her innate learning style.

Written by two educators, How Your Child is Smart identifies six distinct patterns of learning and teaches parents how to help their children learn and communicate most effectively. Through simple questions, activities, and charts, parents can identify their child's pattern and learn how he or she can best be taught in school.

If you have children or have taught children, you've probably observed that they learn differently. This book breaks that down of six different learning styles: visual, kinesthetic, auditory - conscious, subconsious, unconscious. There is a dominant, secondary and third/last. pg 156 All children can learn, given the right instruction and environment (based on their learning style)
162 Our culture is riddled with the sickness of violence and abuse. If we always do what we always did, we'll always get what we always got. (since the publication of this book society is much worse)
164 children learn faster than children
180 hands on math works best for VKA's (visual kinethetic auditory) and KVA's (kinesthetic visual auditory)
Since reading this book I have recommended it to a few mom's.
Do you know what your learning style is and do you know how your children learn?

This book felt dated to me. I think the bottom line points: that everyone learns differently, and that some folks are more visual or auditory or kinesthetic are valid and accurate. But pigeon-holing individuals into one specific pattern of learning felt limiting. I personally have successfully learned different things or similar things at different times in very different manners. I got some good information from this, both as a parent and a teacher, but I think I could've gotten the same information from something much shorter.

This book is excellent. This book explains six patterns of learning and teaches you how to help your children learn based on their own pattern of learning. Reading the chapter describing my own learning pattern left me blown away! It described me exactly. I have learned so much about how my children learn and I'm excited to begin implementing all that I've learned.

I think this book would be helpful to any parent, homeschooler, or teacher.

This book taught me how to be a more effective teacher. By identifying how my children learn, I can understand why they struggle in some areas and not worry so much about what they can't do. Instead I can focus on how to teach them in a way they understand and I was also able to identify my own learning style.
I highly recommend this to any parent.

Very informative....great descriptions of the different types of learners, and good tips for helping each type learn in the way that works best for them. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that has a child that learns differently than the methods used in traditional public schools (or adults who have a different learning style!)

Everyone learns differently and no one way is better than the other. Just because your child doesn't learn in a certain way it doesn't mean they aren't smart. I found this book to be really informative.

A fantastic read. Clearly outlines the myriad of ways people learn and how to capitalize on the way your child learns. I'd suggest this for teachers and any parent wanting to know how to bring out the best in their child.

A must read for everyone! The bottom line is how we are smart not how we score. Markova also published a book for adults, but I find How Your Child Is Smart can address all ages. Offers encouragement and options for you and your child.

This book helped me survive my children's younger years. Especially when ADD was diagnosed for one of them. This book brought sanity to my mind and peace to my heart.

Despite the funny title, it is a good book. I am trying to figure out the different learning styles of my children and how to best teach to their styles.
