Mind Over Matter contains all the images used by Pink Floyd throughout their history from 1968's A Saucerful of Secrets to over 100 artworks along with text on method and technique, relevance and meaning, passion and business, art vs. commerce.
An interesting and sometimes surprising look into the visual art of Pink Floyd. Storm Thorgerson's witty and detailed explanations go a tad further than the usual "Behind the scenes" and breathe new life into the still visuals from the Floydian heyday.
Friend and collaborator of Pink Floyd, Storm Thorgerson has produced some of the most recognisable album covers in history – iconic images that skilfully match visual elements to the core of the music. In this impressive book full of art, Storm provides plenty of entertaining commentary about the band and the generation of concepts and approved designs, although at times he doesn’t explain the full creative process where it seemed like there was much more to share.
I particularly enjoyed the colour sketches for cover ideas (and wished there were more) as these offer a glimpse at the variety of approaches that were initially explored; and as seen in future projects, were often recycled/refreshed for later use. Nicely printed on thick stock, this book highlights the importance of Storm’s contribution to Pink Floyd’s enduring impact and popularity.
A fascinating look into the creative process of Storm Thorgerson, one of the all-time legends of graphic design and possibly the greatest album cover artist who's lived yet, filtered through the prism of his most fruitful band relationship - Pink Floyd. Includes fascinating insights into the reasonings behind his designs and the ultimate process of carrying them out (and often, retooling and remaking them). Essential for any fan of Floyd or design.
Pink Floyd had the most spectacular album art ever in my opinion. Here you see how the covers were composed and which elements were included. From the first records to The Division Bell. Phenomenal works I couldn't put down and will look at over and over again. Best read with listening to their music. Highly recommended!
Storm Thorgerson, the man who created many of the iconic Pink Floyd album covers, as well as surreal covers for other rock bands, is one of my favorite artists. This book deals with his creations for Pink Floyd and is quite extensive.
I enjoyed seeing the progress of the work towards the final image of the album covers. Album covers meant so much more to us in those days. I was always impressed with the cover to the Animals LP and it's nice to see how it came about.
Okay, if you don't like good music and/or interesting photography this might not be the book for you. If, however, you adore Pink Floyd and feel (as I do) that their album cover art is among the best, you will really enjoy reading this one. It has alot of images, but it's not a picture book. The author (who happens to be the one who created all of the imagery) goes into some fascinating detail about all of the pictures that have been used through the years in association with Pink Floyd's records and their live concert productions. There is more than enough behind-the-scenes information to keep fans of all types interested and delighted.
Storm T's work, especially that for pink floyd, is amazing. The album art and photos are the main focus, but it isn't short on information. The biography is deeply personal, in view of Storm's long history with the band. Particularly valuable are his comments on his photographing and aesthetic techniques.
Its all about their photography and very interesting if you like Pink Floyd. Its a very heavy coffee table book so hard to handle. (the one that I read)
