The book is good overall but it's a bit confusing. In some parts, it actually gave me more doubts than answers.

The main problems of the book are that: 1) similar grammar points aren't put together in the same chapter, so you can't really understand the differences between them; 2) a single grammar point is spread throughout various chapters, so you have one usage in one chapter and another usage five or six chapters later. This is quite confusing and you have to do a lot of work to keep all the informations together; 3) the exercises at the end of each chapter don't really try to challange your understanding of the grammar points. These exercises can be divided in three categories: the first one is about arranging the words in the right order, the second one is a reading section where you have to choose the right sentence to put in the text and the last one is a listening section. They aren't actually about using different grammar points, but more about understanding the meaning of the sentences. So the book challanges more your reading and listening compehension than your accuracy in using the different nuances of each grammar rule.

The good part, for me, is that every grammar rule has a single dedicated exercise, while other series, like Shin Kanzen Master, avoid single exercises and put all the similar grammar structures together from the beginning, resulting in not remembering anything in the end, due to the amount of information you have to process. I think the best thing would be to have both the single exercises after every grammar rule and then the review excescises with all the grammar rules intermingled, so that you can challenge your understanding of them.

Overall, I found it more interesting and digestible than the Shin Kanzen Master and at least I managed to complete it and learn something. I would suggest to use it with another book, though. Maybe this and the Shin Kanzen Master can be a good duo.

This was a very helpful book! I would definitely recommend it to people trying to brush up on their Japanese. the short English explanations were especially helpful for some of the more complex terms.

* The grammar contained in this book gives yoou a splendid overview of all the grammar points you need to know to pass N4
* Still, I felt like some grammar plints that are really similar to each other should've been put together into one point and the nuances made clear in a better/more explicit way
* The non-test like tasks felt a bit too simple most of the times. The gaps where you have to fill in the words are small, often not even containing the actual grammatical sentence structure itself. So you often just end up conjugating verbs or transforming adjectives/nouns into already well known forms (dictionary, masu-form with or without masu, te-form) over and over again. Of course having to write down the same word (s) down multiple times seems unnecessary at first glance, but I'd argue that actually helps getting this pattern into memorized.
Also, some of the tasks and example sentences didn't even include all possible variations (in some forms you can use plain form, nouns or adjectives but for example there was no example/task with a noun provided).
Personally I also would have wished for a bit more focus on how particles are used, e. g. the use of "に" for 〜てもらう isn't even mentioned if you exclude the examples.

But overall I'd still say it's worth the money if you yourself actively use it. Let's see if I pass N4 :)

This book is a nice guide to the grammar points required for JLPT N4 exam. I think it does a good job introducing all the needed grammar points and provides easy to understand explanations. A nice bonus is the inclusion of a full JLPT practice test.
Every grammar point has accompanying exercises, but it is only 1 grammar point = 1 exercise (plus a little more in the reviews every chapter), so the book does not do a very great job in helping you memorize the grammar patterns. Because of that I do not recommend using this book as your only grammar resource for N4. I plan on studying the next TRY! book in the series for N3, but it will serve more as introduction to the required grammar and will need other books/materials to reinforce this knowledge.

I chose TRY! for its straightforward structure and comprehensive approach. Unlike Minna no Nihongo which requires juggling multiple books simultaneously, TRY! consolidates everything into one book per JLPT level. No outdated CD dependencies, no unclear explanations like Soumatome - just clean, systematic progression
