Good for what it is. It introduces the grammar points you should know for the JLPT N1. For my purposes it was perfectly suited to get a first overview and an idea of what to focus on in my JLPT studies.

Strong points:
*Grammar points get introduced in text form (context)
*Each chapter ends in a mini test made up like the JLPT (test practice)
*Grammar points contain info on when to use them (casual/formal, spoken/written language etc) and reference similar grammar points
*Audio

Weak points:
*Doesn't go in depth. If there's a point you don't understand you'll have to look it up elsewhere
*Does a bit of everything and not a lot of anything. For specific listening/reading/vocab practice SKM or SM are better suited
*There's a 'grammar glossary' at the end that simply lists similar grammar points without any additional info on differences

On the whole, I got what I wanted out of this book: a good practice guide for someone like me who normally muddles through those fiddly grammatical forms and gets close enough from context, which isn't going to cut it on the JLPT.

Chapters were interspersed with practice quizzes, which was helpful to reinforce the points from the chapter. Based on the practice JLPT tests I've taken, the real test is much more difficult than the practice sections in this book, so just don't take it to mean that you're all set even if you're getting nearly all the practice questions right.

Two things that would have improved the book for me:
- The answer key to the quizzes didn't have any explanations. Most of the time it was obvious, but there were some where two of the answers seemed OK, and I still wouldn't be able to explain why one of them isn't right.

- As you'd expect, there's a lot of overlap between the various grammatical forms. It would have been helpful to have a separate appendix to explain the finer distinctions between functionally similar forms. Something like: Here's all the forms that roughly mean "can't help but feel [x]" or "no way to avoid doing [x]" or whatever, and examples of when each can and can't be used.
